Book American River Watershed Investigation California Reconnaisance Report

Download or read book American River Watershed Investigation California Reconnaisance Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reconnaissance report has been prepared by the Sacramento District Corps of Engineers in accordance with the 1987 Appropriations Act. The report describes studies of alternative measures for flood control in the American River Watershed predicated on the assumption that Auburn Dam as previously authorized will not be constructed. Studies have focused on (1) definition of flood problems in the watershed, (2) formulation and evaluation of alternative plans for detailed development in future feasibility studies, (3) development of a management plan for the feasibility studies, and (4) identification of a non-federal sponsor for the feasibility study. The primary study area included the lower American River between Nimbus Dam and the Sacramento River and the Natomas area and vicinity of Sacramento. Other areas considered were the American River and its tributaries upstream from Nimbus Dam, Sacramento River from the American River upstream to the Sacramento Weir, and Yolo Bypass and its immediate tributaries and distributaries. Major flood control facilities and features in the study area are 400,000 acre-feet (ac-ft) of seasonally dedicated space in Folsom Reservoir, located about 25 miles east of Sacramento, and a complex system of levee and channel improvements downstream along the American and Sacramento Rivers and in the Yolo Bypass.

Book American River Watershed Investigation California Volume 7 Appendix S

Download or read book American River Watershed Investigation California Volume 7 Appendix S written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating in the Sierra Nevada, the North and Middle Forks of the American River join just upstream of the city of Auburn (Figure 1). From the North and Middle Forks confluence, the river flows past Auburn before entering Folsom Lake. Flows are released from Folsom Dam into Lake Natoma, which serves primarily as a reregulating reservoir. From Nimbus Dam, water is released downstream into the lower American River. It then flows through the American River Parkway (Figure 2), located in the densely populated Sacramento metropolitan area, for a distance of 23 miles before reaching its confluence with the Sacramento River. The average annual runoff is about 2.7 million acre-feet. The annual flow regime of the river, however, has changed significantly since construction of Folsom and Nimbus Dams in 1955. Nimbus Salmon and Steelhead Hatchery is located just below Nimbus Dam (Figure 3). Built in the early 1950's to compensate impacts of the Folsom project, it is operated by the California Department of Fish and Game under contract with the Federal Government. The lower American River floodplain is about 4,800 acres in size with an additional 4,000 acres of undeveloped adjacent lands. Of the 8,800 acres, about 5,000 acres are administered by Sacramento County as the American River Parkway (Figure 2). The parkway supports over 5 million visitor-use days annually with an estimated nonmarket value of $96 million (California Department of Fish and Game 1986), making it a very valuable regional asset.

Book Flood Risk Management and the American River Basin

Download or read book Flood Risk Management and the American River Basin written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-09-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) investigations of flood control options for the American River basin and evaluates flood control feasibility studies for the watershed, with attention to the contingency assumptions, hydrologic methods, and other analyses supporting the flood control options. This book provides detailed comments on many technical issues, including a careful review of the 1991 National Research Council report American River Watershed Investigation, and looks beyond the Sacramento case to broader questions about the nation's approach to flood risk management. It discusses how to utilize information available about flood hazard reduction alternatives for the American River basin, the potential benefits provided by various alternatives, the impacts of alternatives on environmental resources and ecosystems, and the trade-offs inherent in any choice among alternatives which does not lie in the realm of scientists and engineers, but in the arena of public decisionmaking.
