This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Wooden Trestle Bridges, and Their Concrete Substitutes: According to the Present Practice on American Railroads IN revising this work it is believed that it has been brought down to the present time. While at first glance it might seem as though the wooden trestle bridge was losing its importance in railroad work, it and its substitutes have in reality been growing in impor tance. Wooden trestles may be gradually disappearing from main lines of heavy traffic, but the increased growth of branch lines or feeders and of trestles at manufacturing plants and for electric railways have probably more than kept pace with its abandonment on main lines. Book Proceedings of the Twenty Fourth Annual Convention of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association

This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Twenty-Fourth Annual Convention of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association: Held at Los Angeles, Cal., October 20-22, 1914 I think if you will take the advice of Mr. Platt, and stay over a few days, following your deliberations, you will decide you want to comevback. Other people who came out got the bug and came back. I want you folks to do the same. I do not know of any class of people in the world who could so act in harmony with us, work in harmony with us, and work to the standard of southern California as could the bridge and building people. I wish you gentlemen knew about building bridges what I do not know. I can say to you, however, that 11 had considerable experience last year in spanning that which was caused by the storm. We did not stop to build bridges. We did the next thing, we built as Robinson Crusoe did, and used the available material. I might tell another little story by way of illustrating what you people have to do, and what we did up in Wisconsin. There was a man who had worked for some time in Antigo. Being thrifty he thought he would go into business for himself, but he did not have the equipment necessary to carry on the work as he had in the old institution. 1on one occasion it was necessary for him to use some glue. He sent Mike to the basement for it. Mike was gone some time. When Mike returned the man said, Mike, never mind, I used some clay. SO it is with you bridgemen. You are the class that has to overcome obstacles; you must avail yourselves of the elements. You are of the class that can not use any shoddy on your work, because after you give it to us to operate, it is put to that physical test that determines the value Of your work. For that reason, you of all men working for a rail road company, can least afford to do that which is shoddy. Book A System of Iron Railroad Bridges for Japan Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Iron Railroad Bridges for Japan There are probably 300 miles of iron bridges in the country now, and perhaps in the neighborhood of 700 miles of wooden bridges. I am speaking now of railway bridges. The construction of road bridges is quite a separate and distinct industry. It is the price of iron that regulates the cost of a bridge; the cost of labor has very little to do with it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Twenty-Fifth Annual Convention of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association, Successor to the Association of Railway Superintendents of Bridges and Buildings: Held at Detroit, Mich., October 19-21, 1915 The President - It is very fitting that we should be welcomed to this fine city by its chief executive. It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you the mayor of Detroit, the Hon. Oscar B. Marx. The Mayor - Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen of the American Railway Bridge and Building Association: In behalf of the people of the city of Detroit I desire to extend to you a most hearty welcome. I am glad, gentlemen, to see that you brought your chaperons along. No convention is a success unless you have the ladies with you, because they always make things pleasant for all of you. I am very glad, indeed, that you came here at this time, be cause we may ask for your assistance. Last year we had the mis fortune to have our bridge connecting the mainland with our beau tiful park, Belle Isle, burn down. I do not know and I do not think the people know exactly what they want in the way of a new bridge. If you gentleman can make any suggestions to us on this subject, you can rest assured that we will be a pleased public.
