Book Imagining the American Polity

Download or read book Imagining the American Polity written by John G. Gunnell and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have long prided themselves on living in a country that serves as a beacon of democracy to the world, but from the time of the founding they have also engaged in debates over what the criteria for democracy are as they seek to validate their faith in the United States as a democratic regime. In this book John Gunnell shows how the academic discipline of political science has contributed in a major way to this ongoing dialogue, thereby playing a significant role in political education and the formulation of popular conceptions of American democracy. Using the distinctive “internalist” approach he has developed for writing intellectual history, Gunnell traces the dynamics of conceptual change and continuity as American political science evolved from a focus in the nineteenth century on the idea of the state, through the emergence of a pluralist theory of democracy in the 1920s and its transfiguration into liberalism in the mid-1930s, up to the rearticulation of pluralist theory in the 1950s and its resurgence, yet again, in the 1990s. Along the way he explores how political scientists have grappled with a fundamental question about popular sovereignty: Does democracy require a people and a national democratic community, or can the requisites of democracy be achieved through fortuitous social configurations coupled with the design of certain institutional mechanisms?

Book The Transformation of American Politics

Download or read book The Transformation of American Politics written by Paul Pierson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary American political landscape has been marked by two paradoxical transformations: the emergence after 1960 of an increasingly activist state, and the rise of an assertive and politically powerful conservatism that strongly opposes activist government. Leading young scholars take up these issues in The Transformation of American Politics. Arguing that even conservative administrations have become more deeply involved in managing our economy and social choices, they examine why our political system nevertheless has grown divided as never before over the extent to which government should involve itself in our lives. The contributors show how these two closely linked trends have influenced the reform and running of political institutions, patterns of civic engagement, and capacities for partisan mobilization--and fueled ever-heightening conflicts over the contours and reach of public policy. These transformations not only redefined who participates in American politics and how they do so, but altered the substance of political conflicts and the capacities of rival interests to succeed. Representing both an important analysis of American politics and an innovative contribution to the study of long-term political change, this pioneering volume reveals how partisan discourse and the relationship between citizens and their government have been redrawn and complicated by increased government programs. The contributors are Andrea Louise Campbell, Jacob S. Hacker, Nolan McCarty, Suzanne Mettler, Paul Pierson, Theda Skocpol, Mark A. Smith, Steven M. Teles, and Julian E. Zelizer.

Book How American Politics Works

  • Author : Richard J. Gelm
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2009-03-26
  • ISBN : 1443808814

Download or read book How American Politics Works written by Richard J. Gelm and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American politics is criticized and belittled by media critics and the public, yet the system is held out as a model for the world. The paradox of this simultaneous cynicism and adulation is rooted in the conflict between the human motives that drive politics. Crisply and clearly written with numerous historical examples, How American Politics Works explains the complex and sometimes confusing American political system in a vibrant and accessible light. Documented with recent and historical scholarship presented clearly in laymen’s terms, How American Politics Works explores the multiple dimensions of politics and the source of Americans’ disillusionment with their government through the “four Ps”: Philosophy, Pragmatism, Personality and Profit. Philosophical and moral principles underpin the key political institutions in America, but values are challenged in the quest to achieve workable political solutions. Policy is rarely made to conform to lofty principles alone. It often results from short-term incremental compromise, driven by people in pursuit of the public good and their own personal self-interest and profit. How American Politics Works explains the inner workings of the American political system, including the power of ideas, political compromise, powerful personalities and the preeminent position of money. While Americans’ high ideals are often illusive in the rough and tumble of political battles, and the public’s trust is bruised with every political scandal, balancing idealism and individual virtue with ambition and self-interest is the dynamic and safeguard of American politics. How American Politics Works offers a comprehensive presentation of the realities, challenges and possibilities of the American political system to bring an understanding, fascination and dedication to the wider public.

Book The Devils We Know

Download or read book The Devils We Know written by James A. Morone and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there an American culture? Certainly, says James Morone. Americans are fighting over it now. They have been fighting over it since the first Puritan stepped ashore. Americans hate government (no national health insurance!) and call for more of it (lock ‘em up!). They prize democracy (power to the people) and scramble to restrict it (the electoral college in the 21st century?). They celebrate opportunity -- but only for some (don’t let those people in!). Americans proclaim liberty then wrestle over which kind—positive (freedom from want) or negative (no new taxes!)? In this volume Morone offers his own answer to the conundrum of American political culture: It is a perpetual work in progress. Immigrants arrive, excluded groups demand power, and each generation injects new ethnicities, races, religions, ideas, foods, entertainments, sins, and body types into the national mix. The challengers—the devils we know—keep inventing new answers to the nation’s fundamental question: Who are we? Each essay in The Devils We Know takes up a different aspect of the creative conflicts that shape America. Ranging from Huck Finn to Obamacare, Morone explores the ways in which culture interacts with other forces—most notably the rules and organizations that channel collective choices. The battle to define the nation’s political culture spills over into every area of American life, but three are especially important: democracy, economics, and morals—each, in turn, complicated by race, race, race. Written over 25 years, these essays constitute a closely observed and deeply thoughtful vision of what America is—its ideas, images, rules, institutions, and culture clashes. Together, they explain just why America is the way it is. And what it might become.

Book The Contours of American Politics

Download or read book The Contours of American Politics written by Jon Roper and published by Polity. This book was released on 2002-08-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Contours of American Politics takes a fresh look at the political culture of the United States. In its complexity and diversity, America fascinates. Its politics are brash and exciting, and its political impact upon the wider world is profound. This book examines not simply the mechanics of America's political system but also the ideas and principles that shape its values. Drawing on a diverse range of interdisciplinary material, the book maps the landscape of contemporary American political culture and identity. It surveys the nation's past as a critical and formative influence upon its present. It argues that religious beliefs, together with patterns of immigration and migration westwards across the continent, create the landscape of America's contemporary political culture. Roper examines the "politics of nostalgia" the roots of American democracy, and the framework of the federal government. Other topics covered include the nature of political power, the influence of the media, the stratification of American society in terms of race, class and gender, and the cultural sensibilities that underpin foreign policy. The Contours of American Politics is an excellent guide to the nation's political thinking, its attitudes and its political processes at the end of the "American Century" and at the beginning of the new millennium. It will be essential reading for undergraduates studying American Politics, American Culture, and International Relations.

Book American Politics Today

Download or read book American Politics Today written by William T. Bianco and published by W. W. Norton. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally, American politics demystified. There is a common belief among college students that American politics and government are broken, or too complicated to understand, or completely illogical. With a student-friendly analytical framework and vivid, current examples, American Politics Today demystifies the political process and shows students how the system actually works-effectively and powerfully. KEY FEATURES Three key ideas-integrated throughout the text, the pedagogical features, and the student emedia-help students develop the skills they need to make sense of politics. · First, politics is everywhere. Debates over what government should do or who should be in charge are not separate from society or from Americans' everyday lives. Politics is a fundamental part of everyone's life, governing what people can and cannot do, their quality of life, and how they think about events, other people, and situations. · Second, political process matters. Governmental actions are the result of conscious choices made by voters, elected officials, and bureaucrats. The media often covers political issues in the same way it does sporting events, and while this makes for entertaining news, it also leads citizens to overlook the institutions, rules, and procedures that have a decisive influence on American life. Politics really is not just a game. · Third, politics is conflictual. The questions debated in elections, and the policy options considered by people in government, are generally marked by disagreement at all levels. Making policy typically involves important issues on which people disagree, sometimes strongly; so compromise, bargaining, and tough choices about trade-offs are central parts of the process. Fresh, contemporary examples show the reality of the American political system and encourage in-depth exploration of political issues. Students often arrive in class with a decidedly negative impression of government-they see it as dysfunctional, unpredictable, and generally puzzling. American Politics Today uses engaging, current examples to help students understand how politics really works. Boxed features reinforce the three key ideas. Boxes distill critical concepts ('Nuts and Bolts'), offer more real-world applications ('Politics Is Everywhere'), introduce students to relevant political and governmental issues in other countries ('Comparing Ourselves to Others'), provoke critical thinking about conventional wisdom in politics ('Challenging the Conventional Wisdom'), and prompt students to think analytically by making their own political decisions ('You Decide'). STUDENT RESOURCES Student StudySpace Students will have free and open access to the online Studyspace, which offers review materials (chapter summaries, flashcards, and quizzes) and additional tools such for student enrichment such as: Everyday Politics Blog This current, engaging blog provides discussions of political news and events from a variety of perspectives and ties directly into the main themes and core concepts of Norton's American government texts. Video Exercises Streaming video selections that relate to key ideas in the text are paired with questions for thought and analysis. INSTRUCTOR RESOURCES Instructor's Manual, Test Bank and Computerized Test Bank and Lecturer PowerPoints.
