Book Between Containment and Rollback

Download or read book Between Containment and Rollback written by Christian F. Ostermann and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War II, American policymakers turned to the task of rebuilding Europe while keeping communism at bay. In Germany, formally divided since 1949,the United States prioritized the political, economic, and, eventually, military integration of the fledgling Federal Republic with the West. The extraordinary success story of forging this alliance has dominated our historical under-standing of the American-German relationship. Largely left out of the grand narrative of U.S.–German relations were most East Germans who found themselves caught under Soviet and then communist control by the post-1945 geo-political fallout of the war that Nazi Germany had launched. They were the ones who most dearly paid the price for the country's division. This book writes the East Germans—both leadership and general populace—back into that history as objects of American policy and as historical agents in their own right Based on recently declassified documents from American, Russian, and German archives, this book demonstrates that U.S. efforts from 1945 to 1953 went beyond building a prosperous democracy in western Germany and "containing" Soviet-Communist power to the east. Under the Truman and then the Eisenhower administrations, American policy also included efforts to undermine and "roll back" Soviet and German communist control in the eastern part of the country. This story sheds light on a dark-er side to the American Cold War in Germany: propaganda, covert operations, economic pressure, and psychological warfare. Christian F. Ostermann takes an international history approach, capturing Soviet and East German responses and actions, and drawing a rich and complex picture of the early East–West confrontation in the heart of Europe.

Book The Balance of Empires

  • Author : John W. Walko
  • Publisher : Universal-Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 1581125925
  • Pages : 126 pages

Download or read book The Balance of Empires written by John W. Walko and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 10, 1952, almost a decade before the Berlin Wall existed, the U.S.S.R. controversially proposed the creation of a reunified, rearmed and neutral Germany. A year before Stalin's death, this was the last overture he tendered on "the German Question." However, the bid failed and Germany remained divided for another 38 years. Why? One can understand neither the Cold War nor the eventual reunification of Germany in 1990 without understanding this 1952 incident. The world in which we live now was created in no small part by the backroom decisions during a few months of 1952. This book on the March Note should appeal to both the armchair historian and the social scientist. Besides being a fascinating tale of diplomatic intrigue, it provides a valuable case study for International Relations scholars. Scholarly arguments of Realism vs. Idealism, levels of analysis, open vs. closed door diplomacy, the selection of which tier of authority to address an issue (from chief of state to low functionary), institutionalism and path-dependence, and the ever-present issue of spin control are all in evidence here. As such, this book could make a useful classroom assignment in International Relations, Diplomatic History, American or European Studies, Journalism or Media Studies. Yet, the theoretically-disinclined can also leave these arguments in the background and simply enjoy this little-known tale of empires which still shapes our lives today.

Book Future US Policy Toward the Reunification of Germany

Download or read book Future US Policy Toward the Reunification of Germany written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years alter the end of World War II, there has not been a final peace settlement between the Allied Powers of World War II and Germany. This is so, not because of lack of interest or effort, but rather, because the Allied Powers have been unable to reach agreement upon the terms of a peace settlement. Meanwhile, Germany has been divided into two principal zones--an East Germany under Soviet influence and a West Germany with a Western orientation--while Berlin remains a divided city deep in Eastern Germany. The eastern part of Germany and East Prussia have been absorbed by Poland and the Soviet Union. None of this dismemberment of Germany has been legitimatized by a peace settlement which would determine Germany's rightful status and borders. The Cold War between East and West has often been focused upon the present division of Germany. This division has constituted, and will continue to constitute, a grave threat to peace' in Europe. The Potsdam Conference seemed to offer some hope that the Allied Powers were in agreement for an eventual unification of Germany through democratic self-determination. Subsequent events have shown that the Soviet Union would settle only for Communist-oriented Germany, or failing in that, a Communist East Germany. Various compromise solutions, although they are not likely to be mutually satisfactory to both East and West, are worthy of future consideration. However, for the West, it appears that a continuation of present unification aims, in accordance with the Potsdam Proclamation, is the only acceptable course of action. In this setting, the United States should continue its adherence to its present German policy, although certain minor modifications seem to be in order.

Download or read book Adenauer and Kennedy written by Frank A. Mayer and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 1996 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German-American relations during the years 1961-1963 were characterized by tension and disagreement as President John F. Kennedy attempted to redefine America's commitment to German reunification, one of the major foreign policy priorities of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. Frank Mayer focuses on how this process of redefinition affected the Berlin Wall Crisis of 1961-1962. Adenauer and Kennedy also analyzes how Adenauer overcame the hostility displayed by the American government toward the Franco-German Treaty of January 1963, which Adenauer believed was a necessary and historic component of his policy of reconciliation with France. Adenauer and Kennedy demonstrates how the events of this period continue to influence contemporary relations between America and a united Germany. Anyone interested in the current state of German-American relations will want to read this fascinating book.

Book America s Germany

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Alan Schwartz
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 440 pages

Download or read book America s Germany written by Thomas Alan Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John J. McCloy was the "wise man" of the Cold War era who had the longest substantial American connection with Germany. A self-made man of great ambition, enormous vitality, and extraordinary tenacity, McCloy served in several government positions before being appointed High Commissioner of Germany in 1949. America's Germany is the first study of McCloy's critical years in Germany. Drawing on deep archival research and interviews, Thomas Schwartz argues that McCloy played a decisive role in the American effort to restore democracy and integrate Germany into Western Europe. Convinced that reunification should wait until Germany was firmly linked to the West, McCloy implemented a policy of "dual containment," designed to keep both the Soviet Union and Germany from dominating Europe. McCloy represented the best and the worst of the values and beliefs of a generation of American foreign policy leaders. He strove to learn from the mistakes made in the aftermath of the collapse of the Weimar Republic, when the West did not do enough to help German democracy survive. Yet his leniency toward convicted Nazi war criminals compromised the ideals for which America had fought in World War II. America's Germany offers an essential history for those wishing to understand the recent changes in Germany and Europe. The book describes a unique period in the relationship between America and Germany, when the two nations forged an extraordinary range of connections--political, economic, military, and cultural--as the Federal Republic became part of the Western club and the new Europe.
