From this elevation they often watched the movements of the inhabitants as they went out to work in their gar dens and adjoining fields, and several were killed within gun shot of the garrison. Of these tragical events no one possesses more inter est than that ia which the Hon. R. J. Meigs, late governor of Ohio, was engaged - it is as follows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discoverers and Pioneers of America The planet that heralds the sunrise, may be a volcanic waste, like the moon, or scathed with the fires of sin, like the earth; and so the morning stars of heroism, that guided and illumined the first advances of a noon-day civilization to this Western World, were not all as cultivated and pure as those followers of the one bright and morning Star, who colonized the shores of Plymouth and the banks of the Delaware. Whoever was illustrious, for any reason, in the early history of America, may be included in the number; and some of the most promiment of these, particularly they who may represent different portions of North America, have been selected as subjects of the following sketches. A number of characters, deserving an equal place with some of those now chosen, were omitted for want of room. Book Four American Pioneers

Download or read book Four American Pioneers written by Frances M. Perry and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four American Pioneers: Daniel Boone George Rogers Clark David Crockett Kit Carson a Book for Young Americans When Daniel Boone was a child the land west of the Alleghanies was a wilderness inhabited only by Indians. But in Virginia, and other places cast of the mountains, there were fine houses with broad porches and large, richly-furnished rooms There stately men in powdered wigs and knee-breeches, and queenly dames in stiff brocades and high-heeled shoes, lived and brought up little American boys and girls after the fashion of their English cousins. However, it was not in such a house nor among such people that Daniel Boone learned to walk, and talk, and think. His father was a poor man who lived in a rude log cabin on the outskirts of a dark forest in Pennsylvania. There Daniel spent his happy childhood. The cabin was small, but that made it very snug in winter when the snow was blowing outside and the logs were blazing in the great stone fireplace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Pioneer, 1843, Vol. 2 IN presenting this volume to its readers, it is perhaps necessary just to say that the objects presented in the first volume will be pursued with increased ardor, and, it is to be hoped, with better effect. We have become, if possible, more thoroughly convinced of the necessity that exists for a work of this kind. It is our intention not to continue articles from one number to another where it can be avoided. In order to enable us to give long and interesting articles entire, but most especially to favor subscribers, we have arranged to increase the size of each number: for particulars, see volume I, page 440. Our American Chronology and Table of Indian Tribes must necessarily be continued; and when these reach one hundred years nearer our time, not only the tables themselves but the work also, will become more interesting. Book The Catholic Pioneers of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Catholic Pioneers of America Classic Reprint written by John O'Kane Murray and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Pioneers of America This little volume is the imperfect fulfilment of a long-cherished design. It trenches on no other work. It merely moves into an unoccupied place - a place of its own. We speak a language in which, I regret to say, it has been the fashion for centuries to give as little credit as possible to Catholics and the Catholic Religion. I have often felt the want of a cheap, handy work on the present subject. Among people, otherwise well informed, there is, beyond all doubt, a great deal of disgraceful ignorance as to what Catholics have achieved in the New World. Let me illustrate. On one occasion, an American lady - who had just given the finishing touches to her education at Paris - expressed astonishment on my saying that Christopher Columbus was a Catholic, and that he found in his religion the chief motive that led him to double the size of the world's map. It seemed to sound stranger than if I had asserted that the illustrious Admiral was a Mormon, a Mahometan, or even the great-grandson of Jack the Giant-killer. Some years ago, I was amused to hear an educated gentleman state that Champlain was a Huguenot, because his name was Samuel; and he assured me that he had this ridiculous piece of information from the principal of a school in Canada. Book Pioneer Days Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pioneer Days Classic Reprint written by Mary H. Carmichael and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Days The stories of early frontier life here pre sented, which are taken from the early his tories of the West and from lives of the frontiersmen and pioneers written by con temporaries and eye-witnesses, introduce the reader to an intimate acquaintance with the Indian races of the country which lies east of the Rocky Mountains. The savage warrior and hunter is presented, stripped of all the decorations with which writers of fiction have dressed him. He is seen in his ferocity and gentleness, in his rascality and nobility, in his boyhood, manhood and old age, and in his wis dom and ignognce. The accuracy and truth of these descriptions of the life and adventures of the period cannot be questioned, and they give us a vivid and inspiring picture of the con ditions under which part of our country was opened up for civilization.
