Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Oratory: Or Selections From the Speeches of Eminent Americans No apology can be required for presenting to the American public a volume of Speeches selected from the best efforts of their own statesmen. Public discussion is elsewhere the province of a few; in our country, it is the duty of almost all. It is not only desirable, therefore, but absolutely necessary, that all should have at hand those models, which the peculiar character of our institutions, the tone of our national thought, and the exigencies of our history, have combined to produce. Foreign orators may serve as examples of style, but the inhabitants of a republic must seek at home for the intellectual results of the government they have chosen, and for the illustration of those principles by which it is to be sustained. If they cannot always find the same refinement of language, or the same elaborateness of thought, which in older countries is the result of hereditary wealth and more scholastic education, they will discover at least a vigorous and masculine diction, patriotic sentiments, and unflinching independence, the appropriate attendants upon themes for the most part grave, and frequently severe. The editor does not affect to have used any extraordinary research in the compilation now presented to the reader. The character of the subjects discussed has had great influence with him in the selections he has made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best American Orations of Today The speeches of Webster, Clay, Pitt, Patrick Henry, Calhoun, Lincoln, Beecher, and many others, are to be found in almost every Speaker and Reader now published. They have been de claimed for years from every school platform in the country, and with most inspiring in uence. Andrew Draper says: The old-time school declamation on recurring red-letter days in the regular 'routine of the early schools was a great stimulant to boys and girls. It was not more in the words that were heard than in the fact that the boys themselves gave expression to them. It is the doing of things which stirs ambition and creates power, even the doing of things which some one else has done. There are plenty of men prominent in affairs who would gladly testify to the uplifting in uences of the master pieces of oratory and literature on their own lives by means of the school declamation. Book Modern American Speeches

Download or read book Modern American Speeches written by Lester Wells Boardman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American Speeches: Edited With Notes and Introductions Many times during his work as a teacher of English, the editor has felt that it would be desirable to pre sent to high school pupils some speeches by American authors on subjects of our own day. He does not believe that the older classics have no message for the coming generation, nor does he believe that the later writings are too new or too poor in quality for the instruction and inspiration of our youth. If a science text-book should present the principles of the gas engine and the aeroplane, why should not a literature text offer equally modern material? Such an innova tion has been made in poetry; and the effect of Poetry of the People on classes encourages the editor to attempt a similar innovation in prose. This book, therefore, presents four selections from authors who are living at the present time or who have died recently, on subjects of vital importance to Americans of to-day and to-morrow. Carl Schurz's True Americanism, although the speech was delivered in 1858, nevertheless has present interest because it was far in advance of its time and foreshadowed some principles of twentieth century government. The New South brings now the the same appeal that Henry W. Grady carried to the North in 1886 for a better understanding of the South. John Hay discusses the peace question in a practical way in America's Love of Peace. Although he feels strongly the obstacles in the way of international peace, yet he recites the advances made by the move ment and looks to its ultimate success. Elihu Root shows us in The pan-american Spirit a specific step toward international friendliness. The cumu lative effect of these four selections reveals an Ameri can ideal developed within our nation and reaching out to influence the world. Book Famous American Statesmen Orators Past and Present Vol 1

Download or read book Famous American Statesmen Orators Past and Present Vol 1 written by Alexander K. McClure and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Statesmen Orators, Past and Present, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches and Their Famous Orations "Oratory," said Abraham Lincoln, "is the great power that moves nations to do and dare; it was oratory that wrecked Rome and made Christianity live." None of our public men better understand the power of oratory than did Lincoln, and he estimated it from its highest plane. He would not have been a great orator in Rome when Roman people were swayed by the impassioned eloquence of their orators to deify to-day and crucify to-morrow, but he was one of the greatest of American orators of the rare type that always appeals to the considerate judgment of mankind. The power of the impassioned oratory that swayed the ancients in the days of Demosthenes has been impaired by the growing in culture and thoughtfulness of the people of all nations. There are occasions when it is yet most appropriate and impressive, but they are rare. It at times asserts itself in great trials in our courts of justice, but its impressions speedily perish, unless they appeal to some enduring human sympathy. Senator Depew truthfully says, "Eloquence is the master element in politics," but political oratory in this country, like the political oratory of every other civilized country of the world, has materially changed in its most effective attributes. In the days of Thomas Corwin of Ohio, and Sargent S. Prentiss of Mississippi, the political orator was the sole dependence of political parties. The newspaper was then a luxury and did not reach the masses of the people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
