Book The Works of F Scott Fitzgerald 45 Novels and Short Stories

Download or read book The Works of F Scott Fitzgerald 45 Novels and Short Stories written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and published by . This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fitzgerald's short stories have themes that do not only relate to the problems and culture of the Jazz Age, but were also about the promises and despair encountered by the youth, as well as aging. Love and relationships between two mismatched or unlikely characters are common, such as people who are unlikely to develop a spark of romantic interest between each other. The plots are usually set in the culture of the upper middle class and the elite, with characters either from this social group or aspiring to become part of it. Being inspired by the events that occurred during The Great Depression and the stock market crash, the stories also involve characters who lose wealth, but who are still trying to maintain their opulent lifestyle. However, Fitzgerald's stories will remain relevant no matter which era the readers are born into, as finding true love and happiness despite the situation will always be a common part of the human experience.Included in this book: Novels: This Side of Paradise (1920) The Beautiful and Damned (1922) Short Stories: The Mystery of the Raymond Mortgage (1909) Reade, Substitute Right Half (1910) A Debt of Honor (1910) The Room with the Green Blinds (1911) A Luckless Santa Claus (1912) Pain and the Scientist (1913) The Trail of the Duke (1913) Shadow Laurels (1915) The Ordeal (1915) Little Minnie McCloskey: A story for girls (1916) The old frontiersman: A story of the frontier (1916) The diary of a sophomore (1917) The prince of pests: A story of the war (1917) Cedric the stoker (1917) The Spire and the Gargoyle (1917) Tarquin of Cheapside (1917) Babes in the Woods (1917) Sentiment-And the Use of Rouge (1917) The Pierian Springs and the Last Straw (1917) Porcelain and Pink (1920) Head and Shoulders (1920) Benediction (1920) Dalyrimple Goes Wrong (1920) Myra Meets His Family (1920) Mister Icky (1920) The Camel's Back (1920) Bernice Bobs Her Hair (1920) The Ice Palace (1920) The Offshore Pirate (1920) The Cut-Glass Bowl (1920) The Four Fists (1920) The Smilers (1920) May Day (1920) The Jelly-Bean (1920) The Lees of Happiness (1920) Jemina (1921) O Russet Witch! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940) was an American novelist, essayist, screenwriter, and short-story writer. During his lifetime, he published four novels, four collections of short stories, and 164 short stories. Although he temporarily achieved popular success and fortune in the 1920s, Fitzgerald only received wide critical and popular acclaim after his death. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald was born in Minnesota, but was primarily raised in New York. He attended Princeton University, but due to a failed relationship and a preoccupation with writing, he dropped out in 1917 to join the army. In the 1920s, Fitzgerald frequented Europe, where he was influenced by the modernist writers and artists of the "Lost Generation" expatriate community, particularly Ernest Hemingway. His second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922), propelled him into the New York City elite. To maintain his lifestyle during this time, he also wrote several stories for magazines. His third novel, The Great Gatsby (1925), was inspired by his rise to fame and relationship with his wife Zelda. Although it received mixed reviews, The Great Gatsby is now widely praised, with some even labeling it the "Great American Novel". While Zelda was placed at a mental institute for her schizophrenia, Fitzgerald completed his final novel, Tender Is the Night (1934). Faced with financial difficulties due to the declining popularity of his works, Fitzgerald turned to Hollywood, writing and revising screenplays. After a long struggle with alcoholism, he died in 1940, at the age of 44. A fifth, unfinished novel.

Scott Fitzgerald continued to write stories his entire life, some of which were never published--until now. Many of the stories in I'd die for you were submitted to major magazines and accepted for publication during Fitzgerald's lifetime but were never printed. A few were written as movie scenarios and sent to studios or producers, but not filmed. Others are stories that could not be sold because their subject matter or style departed from what editors expected of Fitzgerald in the 1930s. Download or read book F Scott Fitzgerald Novels and Stories 1920 1922 LOA 117 written by Jackson R. Bryer and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2000-08-28 with total page 1120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of what he called "the greatest, the gaudiest spree in history," F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the works that brought him instant fame, mastering the glittering aphoristic prose and keen social observation that would distinguish all his writing. This Library of America volume brings together four volumes that collectively offer the fullest literary expression of one of the most fascinating eras in American life. This Side of Paradise (1920) gave Fitzgerald the early success that defined and haunted him for the rest of his career. Offering in its Princeton chapters the most enduring portrait of college life in American literature, this lyrical novel records the ardent and often confused longings of its hero's struggles to find love and to formulate a philosophy of life. Flappers and Philosophers (1920), a collection of accomplished short stories, includes such classics as "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," and "The Ice Palace." Fitzgerald continues his dissection of a self-destructive era in his second novel, The Beautiful and Damned (1922), as the self-styled aristocrat Anthony Patch and his beautiful wife, Gloria, are cut off from an inheritance and forced to endure the excruciating dwindling of their fortune. Here New York City, playground for the pleasure-loving Patches and brutal mirror of their dissipation, is portrayed more vividly than anywhere else in Fitzgerald's work. Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), his second collection of stories, includes the novella "May Day," featuring interlocking tales of debutantes, soldiers, and socialists brought together in the uncertain aftermath of World War I, and "A Diamond as Big as the Ritz," a fable in which the excesses of the Jazz Age take the hallucinatory form of a palace of unfathomable opulence hidden deep in the Montana Rockies. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Scott Fitzgerald hinted at this kind of inversion when he called his era 'a generation grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'. Perhaps nowhere in American fiction has this 'Lost Generation' been more vividly preserved than in Fitzgerald's short fiction. Spanning the early twentieth-century American landscape, this collection captures, with Fitzgerald's signature blend of enchantment and disillusionment, America during the Jazz Age.
