Book American Mashup

Download or read book American Mashup written by Aaron Michael Morales and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Mashup is a first-year popular culture reader for the Facebook/Twitter generation with cutting-edge themes and reading selections designed to encourage critical thinking and writing by analyzing diverse genres, disciplines and strategies. In touch with today's generation of college students, for whom trends and styles change more rapidly than any other generation, The American Mashup teaches students to read texts, and then it sets them free to make complex connections on their own. The book builds upon the textual readings students do on a daily basis, unaware of the fact that they are judging, critiquing, and evaluating texts without consciously thinking about the process. Using texts from blogs, videos, magazines, advertisers, journalists, researchers, and pop culture gurus, The American Mashup incorporates current trends in music, fashion, advertising, entertainment, and technology to provide students with a springboard for essay assignments and in-class discussions. The American Mashup also introduces a number of new topics of interest to students by virtue of their subject matter: social media, sexuality and relationships, work and careers, violence, drugs and alcohol, and heroes and celebrities. Most importantly, The American Mashup simultaneously prepares students for college writing across a wide variety of disciplines, as well as exposing them to writing styles and practices that they will both encounter and create beyond their college experience.

McLane, whose 2014 collection This Blue was a finalist for the National Book Award, is a poet of wit and play, of romanticism and intellect, of song and polemic. More Anon presents her work anew. The poems spark with life, and the concentrated selection showcases her energy and style. As Parul Seghal wrote in Bookforum, “To read McLane is to be reminded that the brain may be an organ, but the mind is a muscle. Hers is a roving, amphibious intelligence; she’s at home in the essay and the fragment, the polemic and the elegy.” In More Anon, McLane—a poet, scholar, and prizewinning critic—displays the full range of her vertiginous mind and daring experimentation.

Book Vampires Race and Transnational Hollywoods

Download or read book Vampires Race and Transnational Hollywoods written by Dale Hudson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the vampire serves as both object and mode of analysis for more than a century of Hollywood filmmaking. Never dying, shifting shape and moving at unnatural speed, as the vampire renews itself by drinking victims' blood, so too does Hollywood renew itself by consuming foreign styles and talent, moving to overseas locations, and proliferating in new guises. In Vampires, Race, and Transnational Hollywoods, Dale Hudson explores the movement of transnational Hollywood's vampires, between low-budget quickies and high-budget franchises, as it appropriates visual styles from German, Mexican and Hong Kong cinemas and off-shores to Canada, Philippines, and South Africa. As the vampire's popularity has swelled, vampire film and television has engaged with changing discourses around race and identity not always addressed in realist modes. Here, teen vampires comfort misunderstood youth, chador-wearing skateboarder vampires promote transnational feminism, African American and Mexican American vampires recover their repressed histories. Looking at contemporary hits like True Blood, Twilight, Underworld and The Strain, classics such as Universal's Dracula and Dracula, and miscegenation melodramas like The Cheat and The Sheik, the book reconfigures Hollywood historiography and tradition as fundamentally transnational, offering fresh interpretations of vampire media as trans-genre sites for political contestation.

Book Parody in the Age of Remix

Download or read book Parody in the Age of Remix written by Ragnhild Brøvig and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art of mashup music, its roots in parody, and its social and legal implications. Parody needn’t recognize copyright—but does an algorithm recognize parody? The ever-increasing popularity of remix culture and mashup music, where parody is invariably at play, presents a conundrum for internet platforms, with their extensive automatic, algorithmic policing of content. Taking a wide-ranging look at mashup music—the creative and technical considerations that go into making it; the experience of play, humor, enlightenment, and beauty it affords; and the social and legal issues it presents—Parody in the Age of Remix offers a pointed critique of how society balances the act of regulating art with the act of preserving it. In several jurisdictions, national and international, parody is exempted from copyright laws. Ragnhild Brøvig contends that mashups should be understood as a form of parody, and thus be protected from removal from hosting platforms. Nonetheless, current copyright-related content-moderation regimes, relying on algorithmic detection and automated decision making, frequently eliminate what might otherwise be deemed gray-area content—to the detriment of human listeners and, especially, artists. Given the inaccuracy of takedowns, Parody in the Age of Remix makes a persuasive argument in favor of greater protection for remix creativity in the future—but it also suggests that the content-moderation challenges facing mashup producers and other remixers are symptomatic of larger societal issues.

Book Jane Austen and Vampires

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Parisot
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2024-01-02
  • ISBN : 3031492862
  • Pages : 133 pages

Download or read book Jane Austen and Vampires written by Eric Parisot and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen and Vampires is the first book to investigate the literary convergence of Jane Austen and vampires in Austen fanfic after the success of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight (2005) and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2009). It asks how the shifting cultural values of Austen and the vampire have aligned, and what their connection might mean for their respective contemporary legacies. It also makes a case for reading “low brow” Austen fanfic attentively, as a way to gain meaningful insight directly from Austen fans into the tensions and anxieties surrounding contemporary notions of love, sex, femininity, and Austen’s modern currency. Offering close readings of Austen’s vampire-slaying heroines, vampiric retellings of Pride and Prejudice, and the transformation of Austen herself into a vampire, this book reveals Austen-vampire mashups as messy, complex entanglements that creatively and self-reflexively interrogate modern fantasies of vampire romance. By its unique intersection of Jane Austen with the vampire, the Gothic, fan culture and popular romance, Jane Austen and Vampires adds a new chapter to the history of Austen’s reception, for fans, students and scholars alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In World Enough, Maureen N. McLane maps a universe of feeling and thought via skyscapes, city strolls, lunar vistas, and passages through environments given and built. These poems explore how we come to know ourselves—sensually, intellectually, politically, biologically, historically, and anthropologically. Moving from the most delicate address to the broadest salutation, World Enough takes us from New England to New York to France to the moon. McLane fuses song and critique, giving us poetry as "musical thought," in Carlyle's phrase. Shuttling between idyll and disaster, between old forms and open experiment, these are restless, probing, exacting poems that aim to take the measure of—and to give a measure for—where we are. McLane moves through many forms and creates her own, invoking the French Revolution alongside convolutions of the heart and revolutions of the moon. Shifting effortlessly between the species and the self, between the sentient surround and the peculiar pulse within, World Enough attests to experience both singular and shared: "not that I was alive / but that we were."
