Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Prose Masters: Cooper Hawthorne Emerson Poe Lowell Henry James The literary standard of his countrymen is undoubt edly far higher than it was in Cooper's own day. No writer at present With a tenth of his ability would com mit his literary faults - faults for Which the standard of his day is largely responsible, since it was oblivious to them and since they are precisely those which any Widely accepted standard would automatically correct. In other words, Cooper wrote as well as, and builded better than, any one required of him - and though genius, ao: hypothesi, escapes the operation of evolutionary law, literary or any other artistic expression is almost as much a matter of supply and demand as railroads or any other means of communication; the demand, that is, produces, controls, and gives its character to the supply. The theory that art is due to artists leaves the origin of artists unexplained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sufism and American Literary Masters

Download or read book Sufism and American Literary Masters written by Mehdi Aminrazavi and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the rich, but generally unknown, influence of Sufism on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American literature. The translation of Persian poets such as Hafiz and Sa'di into English and the ongoing popularity of Omar Khayyam offered intriguing new spiritual perspectives to some of the major American literary figures. As editor Mehdi Aminrazavi notes, these Sufi influences have often been subsumed into a notion of "Eastern," chiefly Indian, thought and not acknowledged as having Islamic roots. This work pays considerable attention to two giants of American literature, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman, who found much inspiration from the Sufi ideas they encountered. Other canonical figures are also discussed, including Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Henry David Thoreau, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, along with literary contemporaries who are lesser known today, such as Paschal Beverly Randolph, Thomas Lake Harris, and Lawrence Oliphant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Progress: With Illustrative Texts From Master-Pieces of Egyptian, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Modern European and American Literature Life is based upon necessity, the necessity of making a liv ing; but that necessity breeds a need, the need of living; the making of a living being indeed not the end of life, but the necessary means to the true end which is heightening to its fullest expression our capacity of living. Up to a certain point the word must ls inevitably supreme, but beyond that point I will is possible. It is so even in business. A man must lay the foundations of the latter in the needs of his trade and build in response to its conditions; but having thus satisfied the meces sities of the case, he can exercise volition as to whether the business shall be run solely for his own sordid self-interest, or in a way that will better the circumstances of his employees and raise the standard of living in his community. Book English Literature Considered as an Interpreter of English History

Download or read book English Literature Considered as an Interpreter of English History written by Henry Coppée and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature, Considered as an Interpreter of English History: Designed as a Manual of Instruction It will be observed that the remoter periods of the literature are those in which the historic teachings are the most distinctly visible we see them from a vantage ground, in their full scope, and in the interrelations of their parts. Although in the more modern periods the number of writers is greatly increased, we are too near to discern the entire period, and are in danger of becoming partisans, by reason of our limited view. Especially is this true of the age in which we live. Contemporary history is but party-chronicle the true philosophic history can only be written when distance and elevation give due scope to our vision. The principle I have laid down is best illustrated by the great literary masters. Those of less degree have been treated at less length, and many of them will be found in the smaller print, to save space. Those who study the book should study the small print as carefully as the other. After a somewhat elaborate exposition of English literature, I could not induce myself to tack on an inadequate chapter on. American literature; and, besides, I think that to treat the two subjects in one volume would be as incongruous as to write a joint biography of Marlborough and Washington. American literature is too great and noble, and has had too marvelous a development to be made an appendix to English literature. Book excerpt: From the olive trees of southern France to Gnostic cults in Egypt, a man and his lovers are invented and reinvented in this first volume of a great literary adventure. For British doctor Bruce Drexel, a return to Provence is bittersweet. Here, at a rustic chateau, he once fell in love with Sylvie, the Frenchwoman who would become his wife, and befriended her brother, Piers. The three made up a peculiar, potent ménage for years until Sylvie’s descent into madness and Piers’s suicide. As Drexel attends to Piers’s affairs, he becomes steeped in the memories of a spiritually transformational trip to Egypt; the band of intellectual confederates who used to be his intimate friends; and a three-sided love that became his reason for being. So begins Monsieur, the masterful first entry of Durrell’s Avignon Quintet, an infinite regress of memory and imagination that challenges the formal conventions of fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of Literature: Scott IF posterity were to alter its verdict on the work of Walter Scott, and condemn Marmz'on and Waverley and Tfie Hedra' to oblivion, the man himself would still be one of the most interesting figures in the history of literature. For his life, as written by his son-in-law Lockhart, forms one of the few masterpieces of biography in English. It has nothing in common with Boswell's Lgfe of [012mm in style or method; but it gives a picture as full, as intimate, and as attractive as Boswell's portrait of his hero. There are probably no other English Men of Letters Of whom we have the same full knowledge that we have of these two. And in Scott's case the Life is supplemented by four volumes of his letters, and still more valuably by his Diary which he kept during the most critical and tragic part Of his career. There are controversies about details of his life, and affection for the man has probably unduly in fluenced opinion with regard to his share in the respon sibility for his firm's bankruptcy. But we may say of Scott, as we may say of very few men, that he is really known to us, and ourjudgment on his life and writings may be founded on full information. Download or read book Masters of French Literature Classic Reprint written by George McLean Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of French Literature For the general reader, I fancy such a his tory of French literature would be far more illuminating than some of the detailed hand books which bewilder the mind with thousands of names and titles, and brief, insufficient ah stracts of books great and small. There would be the difference that exists between a series of views from twenty mountain tops, each one within sight of its immediate neighbors, and the record made by a pedometer. Or, to vary this rather prolonged figure of speech which has helped us thus far, such a history would possess the advantage that a person gains from residence in a few foreign towns, as compared with spending an equal amount of time in rapid travel, from one meaningless hotel to another.
