It contains newspaper articles, pictures, photographs of personality's and activities in the old Post Home and sketches of Wards tomb and presents a pictorial representation of China Post 1 history. Time has taken its toll on the pages of this scrap book nevertheless, in our ongoing effort to preserve our history for another one hundred years and beyond we have digitized and published this book. This book is a scrapbook maintained by the Post from about 1934 - 1947. This is one of five books that survived the Japanese occupation of China and that chronicles the history of the Post prior to the Japanese occupation and after the conclusion of WWII. China Post 1 will continue to survive. This is an accurate reproduction of the entire scrap book. At the time that this scrapbook was initially compiled, little was known about the impact of acid-based paper products. It is important to preserve the integrity of the original document therefore everything was reproduced regardless of its condition. The final entry is from November 7, 1948.... Months before our final exile from China.

Book The Story of China Post 1

Download or read book The Story of China Post 1 written by Scott Riebel and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-20 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China Post 1 is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Founded in Shanghai, China in November 1919, the history of this Post is in fact a history of the membership of the Post, their love for it and their dedication and efforts in ensuring the success and survival of this organization. During the early years, the Post conducted operation much like any other Post within the American Legion. In 1938, following the Japanese occupation of China, the membership shifted focus and much of their work consisted of clandestine operations, intelligence gathering and reporting through their established business connections. On December 8, 1941 following Pearl Harbor, all U.S. expats were gathered up and incarcerated in "civilian detention facilities" like Pootung Prison. During that long incarceration, Post members continued their intel gathering and reporting through a vast network of established civilian contact. One member in particular stands out, Past Commander Frank D. Mortimer.Following the war and their release from incarceration, Post members immediately returned to the old Post home and began the process of assisting expats and veterans return to the U.S., locate missing relatives, arrange for final honors; frankly, anything that was within their power to accomplish with little money. In 1948 the people abandoned the Chiang Kai-shek government in favor of Mao Zedong and in 1948, Americans in Mao's China became persona non grata. So began our exile. The Soldier of Fortune moniker appealed to a certain category of war fighters in South East Asia. The resurgence of the Post is due in large part to these people. You just cannot join China Post 1. Membership in the Post is not solicited. Prospective members MUST be recommended by a current member. The veracity of their application is carefully verified, and an intake interview is conducted. The brand that is China Post 1 is carefully protected. The story of China Post 1 is the story of the membership. This is a collection of their stories and their contributions to maintaining the Post and its brand. This is their story.

Book excerpt: There are people in this world that will sacrifice everything for God and Country. This is their story.China Post 1, the oldest American Legion Post founded in China, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The history of this Post is in fact a history of the membership of the Post, their love for it and their dedication and efforts in ensuring the success and survival of this organization. During the early years and prior to the invasion and subsequent occupation by Japan in 1938, the Post conducted operation much like any other Post within the American Legion.Following the Japanese occupation the membership shifted focus and much of their work consisted of clandestine operations, intelligence gathering and reporting through their established business connections. On December 8, 1941 following Pearl Harbor, all U.S. expats were gathered up and incarcerated in "civilian detention facilities" like Pootung Prison. General Chennault, Chairman of the Executive Committee for China Post 1 donated a large portion of his own money rebuilding the Post, restoring Ward's Tomb and providing food and materials to the People of China. He redirected his energy into assisting the people of China with the herculean effort to rebuild this war ravaged country. Despite the government's best efforts, the people abandoned the Chiang kai-shek government for the populist Mao Zedong and in 1948,Americans in Mao's China became persona non grata. So began our exile. The Soldier of Fortune moniker appealed to a certain category of war fighters in South East Asia.Men and women who willingly volunteered to conduct operations in regions where their detainment would result in long periods of interrogation without the services of consular contact.Further, these people provided plausible deniability to the agencies, an asset during clandestine operations. The resurgence of the Post is due in large part to these people willing to work in the grey. You just cannot join China Post 1. Book Battle for Beijing 1858 1860

Download or read book Battle for Beijing 1858 1860 written by Harry Gelber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘battle for Beijing’ is universally – and quite wrongly – believed to have been about opium. This book argues that it was about freedom to trade, Britain’s demands for diplomatic equality, and French demands for religious freedom in China. Both countries agreed that their armies, which repeatedly prevailed over Chinese ones that were numerically superior, would stay out of Beijing itself, but were infuriated by China’s imprisonment, torture and death of British, French and Indian negotiators. At the same time, the British and French also helped the empire to battle rebels and to pocket port and harbour dues. They steered carefully between their political and trading demands, and navigated the danger that undue stress would make China’s fragile government and empire fall apart. If it did, there would be no one to make any kind of agreement with; much of East Asia would be in chaos and Russian power would soon expand. Battle for Beijing, 1858–1860 offers fresh insights into the reasons behind the actions and strategies of British authorities, both at home and in China, and the British and French military commanders. It goes against the widely accepted views surrounding the Franco-British conflict, proposing a bold new argument and perspective.

Book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps

Download or read book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps written by Rebecca Robbins Raines and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.
