Book Reader for Coming Americans

Download or read book Reader for Coming Americans written by Peter Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reader for Coming Americans: Readings and Language Lessons in History, Industries and Government The millions of foreign-born in America, if they are to love this country, must know that the country is worth loving. The definition of the Republic, A government of the people, by the people and for the people, conveys no meaning to the alien unless he is shown how the people rule. To sing, The land Of the free and the home of the brave, is not enough; it must be accompanied by a rehearsal of some of the deeds of the free and the brave. The foreign-born can only learn by systematic teaching that America has a form of government well calculated to reflect the needs of the people; that our courts of justice guarantee to each man the fruits of his labor; that civil and religious liberty IS enjoyed by all who dwell under the shadow of the stars and stripes. These facts are a gospel of glad tidings to millions of immigrants. They come hoping for great things; it remains with us whether or not they shall realize their hope. A government dependent upon militarism and bureaucracy can afford to ignore the ignorance and illiteracy of its subjects; a democracy cannot. Our brother immigrant needs education, and when he understands that justice and truth, free dom and liberty, rights and duties, are necessary in a democracy, he will help to preserve them. Book Pen Pencil and Poison

Download or read book Pen Pencil and Poison written by Oscar Wilde and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Great Americans: For Little Americans The primary aim of this book is to furnish the little learner reading matter that will excite his attention and give him pleasure, and thus make lighter the difficult task of learning to read. The ruggedness of this task has often been increased by the use of disconnected sentences, or lessons as dry and uninteresting as finger exercises on the piano. It is a sign of promise that the demand for reading matter of interest to the child has come from teachers. I have endeavored to meet this requirement in the following stories. As far as possible the words chosen have been such as are not difficult to the little reader, either from their length or their unfamiliarity. The sentences and paragraphs are short. Learning to read is like climbing a steep hill, and it is a great relief to the panting child to find frequent breathing places. It is one of the purposes of these stories to make the mind of the pupil familiar with some of the leading figures in the history of our country by means of personal anecdote. Some of the stories are those that every American child ought to know, because they have become a kind of national folklore. Such, for example, are "Putnam and the Wolf" and the story of "Franklin's Whistle." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Americans

Download or read book Modern Americans written by Chester Milton Sanford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Americans: A Biographical School Reader for the Upper Grades Tell us about real folks. This is the request that comes to us again and again from children in the upper grades. In response to this appeal, the authors, in preparing Modern Americans, have attempted to give the pupils the worth-while things they like to read rather than the things adults think they ought to like. Those who have taught reading very long agree that the old time hero stories have always had a peculiar charm for pupils. But all the heroes did not live in olden times; they are with us today. Why, then, isn't it well to acquaint the children with present-day heroes? Young people in the upper grades are especially interested in the men and women who are actually doing things. They desire to study in school the persons they read about in the daily papers. Elihu Root recently said: It seems sometimes as if our people were interested in nothing but personalities. To bridge the gap between our schools and practical everyday life has become one of the chief concerns of the wide-awake teacher. Accordingly, in geography we are studying the industries about us In English, civics, and history we are devoting an increasing amount of time to a consideration of Current Events. All this is in the right direction; for, to create an interest in the men and women of the hour and the social activities of the day makes for an intelligent citizenship. Acquaint the people with the great men of any period and you have taught them the history of the period, says Carlyle. Know the past, if possible; know the present by all means. Book Reading Book of English Classics for Young Pupils

Download or read book Reading Book of English Classics for Young Pupils written by C. W. Leffingwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading Book of English Classics for Young Pupils: Selections From the Standard Literature of England and America His compilation from the English Classics is intended to provide for young pupils a variety of reading exercises, and at the same time to make them acquainted with the names and works of great authors. While the selections are from the writings of recognized masters, they are such as boys and girls studying the common English branches can comprehend. By this rule of selection some of the noblest compositions must, of course, be excluded; but most of the great writers of England and America are represented, - a greater number, perhaps, than in any Reader heretofore published. No argument is needed to demonstrate that such a course of reading is desirable for the young. If we would teach our pupils to read ideas as well as words, we must give them ideas to read; if we would train them to speak and write gracefully, we must place before them good models of language. It is association that gives culture. Children that are brought up in the company of high-minded men and women, are, as a rule, like minded those that are familiar with noble speech, are generally well spoken. Book American Ideas for English Readers

Download or read book American Ideas for English Readers written by James Russell Lowell and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An impression has prevailed—and has gained credence at some times and in some places, that, in his later years, and in the presence of a society differently organized from that which he found at home, the ardor of his love of country was quenched:—that he became less an American as he saw more of other lands. What is it to be an American? The definition may vary, in different regions. What was it, always, with him? If to be an American means merely to be successful in a large and worldly way—whether in politics, or in business, or in letters; to out-talk, out-spend, out-bid, out-invent others; to drive faster; to travel farther; to push harder; to build bigger houses; to found more richly endowed Universities; to construct greater Observatories; to establish more and larger public libraries:—if to do these and similar things is all that goes to make an American—the charge is true. In such sense, Mr. Lowell was not so good an American as some others. But, in the larger and truer sense:—in striving for all that goes to make a people more noble in aim, more humane, more intelligent, more peace-loving, more free, more self-respecting, more artistic, in short more fully men and women of the best type,—Mr. Lowell may well be accepted as the representative American, of whom we should all be proud. It was his rare fortune to be Minister of the United States to Great Britain during a most interesting period. The serious troubles which had grown out of the wrong we had suffered at her hands during the civil war had been happily ended. The era of reconciliation had begun. In what light should we stand before the world, after winning the great verdict in the Alabama case:—as a community of sharp traders, condoning a great national wrong for a petty sum of money?—or as a people striving chiefly for the maintenance of the true principles of national honor and international comity? Mr. Lowell, perhaps more than any one in America, was the man who, by training, by culture, by scholarship, by attainments in the world of letters, by unsullied character, was fitted to present to the English people an embodiment of Americanism, in its best expression. More than that:—he was eminently fitted to illustrate that idea, and give it weight, dignity and authority. In all his intercourse with the aristocratic representatives of privileged countries, he—the plain, untitled representative of a democratic government—proud to stand for a people with whom liberty and equality were supreme terms—more than held his own in every trial of intellect, of courtesy, of wit, of all that wins in society and the world. So, at last, no circle was complete without him:—to claim him as guest was matter of emulation. Some of these things are, in a certain sense, of small account. Yet in a society so largely conventional as all diplomatic society is, and of necessity must be, it is much that an American should, by common consent, stand at the head, even in matters of ceremonial. It reveals a quickness and versatility of mind which is not common. A certain native, spontaneous grace, both of words and manner, characterized all Mr. Lowell’s utterances; and it was so truly genuine that it could not fail to charm, when the mere external imitation was sure to repel. The record which this little book gives of his unstudied speeches and letters in England shows how thoroughly imbued he was with the American idea. It also shows how strenuously he used every occasion to try to bring about a higher and truer friendship between the two great countries whose mission it seems to be to uphold and extend regulated liberty throughout the world. Some of these speeches were made while he was still accredited Minister to Great Britain: others, after he had ceased to hold the title, though he remained in reality the true American representative to that people. There is, perhaps, no other instance of a citizen of the United States holding such position, with ever increasing regard, for years after he had ceased to be titular representative. The honors bestowed on him by the Universities were more than out-done by the honor in which he was held by the people. The one was a tribute to scholarship and attainments:—the other, a recognition of manhood and integrity.

Book On American Books Classic Reprint

Download or read book On American Books Classic Reprint written by Francis Hackett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On American Books The English reader of this roll-call of critics may ask: Have any of these critics interpreted a single writer with the touch of a master, or added a single aesthetic idea to the sum total of our knowledge of the meaning of art? Perhaps the English reader may find an answer by asking the same question con cerning the critics of his own country to-day. The Victorian poet who said that good critics are rarer than good authors was right. To feel deeply and yet to think profoundly, to know much and yet to write well - it is no easy staircase that the great critic has to climb. This is in part because they are more strictly readers - they do not attempt to cover the many specialties which have attached themselves of late to our own readers; and in part because the power of really good reading to awaken interest and impress itself upon the mind has come to be better recognized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Girls in the United States In order to fit myself for this work, I devoted some time to a course of reading in American educational literature. This is abundant, and while travelling in America, I was able, through the kindness of the various school and college authorities, to form a somewhat wide collection of books and pamphlets dealing with the various aspects of the question; a bibliography of these and other works read is given below. I have thus been able, to some extent, to understand the aims of Amuioan educators, and check the observations I made in the schools themselves. I have also quoted from reports and other writings of Americans in order to put their views before English readers. Book Stamped from the Beginning

Download or read book Stamped from the Beginning written by Ibram X. Kendi and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Award winning history of how racist ideas were created, spread, and deeply rooted in American society. Some Americans insist that we're living in a post-racial society. But racist thought is not just alive and well in America -- it is more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues, racist ideas have a long and lingering history, one in which nearly every great American thinker is complicit. In this deeply researched and fast-moving narrative, Kendi chronicles the entire story of anti-black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. He uses the life stories of five major American intellectuals to drive this history: Puritan minister Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, W.E.B. Du Bois, and legendary activist Angela Davis. As Kendi shows, racist ideas did not arise from ignorance or hatred. They were created to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched discriminatory policies and the nation's racial inequities. In shedding light on this history, Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose racist thinking. In the process, he gives us reason to hope.
