Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed in 1931, New York’s Waldorf-Astoria towers over Park Avenue as an international landmark and a masterpiece of Art Deco architecture. A symbol of elegance and luxury, the hotel has hosted countless movie stars, business tycoons, and world leaders over the past ninety years. American Hotel takes us behind the glittering image to reveal the full extent of the Waldorf’s contribution toward shaping twentieth-century life and culture. Historian David Freeland examines the Waldorf from the opening of its first location in 1893 through its rise to a place of influence on the local, national, and international stage. Along the way, he explores how the hotel’s mission to provide hospitality to a diverse range of guests was put to the test by events such as Prohibition, the anticommunist Red Scare, and civil rights struggles. Alongside famous guests like Frank Sinatra, Martin Luther King, Richard Nixon, and Eleanor Roosevelt, readers will meet the lesser-known men and women who made the Waldorf a leader in the hotel industry and a key setting for international events. American Hotel chronicles how institutions such as the Waldorf-Astoria played an essential role in New York’s growth as a world capital.

Book Great American Hotel Architects

Download or read book Great American Hotel Architects written by Stanley Turkel CMHS and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve architects featured in this book designed ninety-four hotels from 1878 to 1948. Many of them worked as apprentices in architect’s offices. Some were lucky enough to study in an architectural college, and some were wealthy enough to attend the École des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Paris. This school has a history of more than 350 years in training many of the great artists of Europe. Beaux-Arts’s style was modeled on classical antiquities. The origins of the school were drawn from 1648—when the Académe des Beaux-Arts was founded to educate the most talented students in drawing, painting, sculpting, engraving, and architecture. Women were admitted beginning in 1897.

Book The American Hotel

Download or read book The American Hotel written by Molly W. Berger and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Prize winner in the scholarly journals category of the American Association of Museums (AAM) publication competition for institutions with budgets over $500,000 This latest volume of the groundbreaking Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Artsexplores the material, social, and cultural world of the large American hotel. Ten richly illustrated essays look at the architects, designers, and social forces that created this distinctive and complex urban institution, from Gilded Age New York to 1950s Miami Beach. Broadly imagined and yet cohesively focused, the essays examine such major historical processes as consumption and modernism, and race, class, and gender. Topics include the lavish New York apartment hotels of Schultze and Weaver (the architects of the Waldorf-Astoria); the connection between hotels and mansions in the "rich man's city" of Gilded Age New York; the "bodacious" interior designs of Dorothy Draper; the flamboyant Miami Beach fantasies of Morris Lapidus; Henry Flagler's St. Augustine resorts; Atlantic City's old Traymore hotel; the social world of hotel chambermaids and clerks; the parallel world of African-American "pleasure travelers"; the trend toward efficiency and standardization; and the capitalist narrative of early-twentieth-century urban hotel demolitions.

Book Hotel Lobbies and Lounges

Download or read book Hotel Lobbies and Lounges written by Tom Avermaete and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series investigates the historical, theoretical and practical aspects of interiors. The volumes in the Interior Architecture series can be used as handbooks for the practitioner and as a critical introduction to the history of material culture and architecture. Hotels occupy a particular place in popular imagination. As a place of exclusive sociability and bohemian misery, a site of crime and murder and as a hiding place for illicit liaison, the hotel has embodied the dynamism of the metropolis since the eighteenth century. This book explores the architectural significance of hotels throughout history and how their material construction has reflected and facilitated the social and cultural practices for which they are renowned. Contemporary developments in the planning and design of hotels are addressed through a series of interviews and case studies. Illustrated throughout, this book is an innovative and important contribution to architectural and interior design theory literature.

Book Great American Hotel Architects Volume 2

Download or read book Great American Hotel Architects Volume 2 written by Stanley Turkel CMHS and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteen architects featured in this book designed 304 hotels and apartment hotels. Many were designed on the European plan for families to live without full service kitchens. Meals were prepared and served in restaurant-type dining rooms catering exclusively to residents and their families. The apartment hotels employed full-time service staffs who prepared and served daily room service meals. The first apartment hotels were built between 1880 and 1895. They were followed by a second wave of construction after the passage of the 1899 building code and the 1901 Tenement House Law. The third wave of apartment hotel construction occurred during the 1920s and ended with the Great Depression of the thirties. The passage of the Multiple Dwelling Act of 1929 altered height and bulk restrictions and permitted high-rise apartment buildings for the first time.
