Background and Establishment The domestication of guinea pigs goes back to roughly 5000 BC in the Andean area, where they were first employed as a source of meat. They were maintained by the Inca and other indigenous groups. The Spanish conquistadors who landed in the Americas during the 16th century brought guinea pigs back to Europe, where they immediately became popular among the upper classes as exotic pets. Their attraction rapidly spread, and they became a widespread home pet in Europe and eventually in North America. Guinea pigs were first reported scientifically by Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner in the mid-16th century.
