Book American Gardens Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Gardens Classic Reprint written by Guy Lowell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Gardens It must, however, be remembered that almost no trace is left of the famous gardens of antiquity. We know where many of them were situated, we know the dimensions and some of the details of others, but to gain an idea of their effect we must always draw largely on our imaginations. Contemporaneous litera ture aids us a little; 3 knowledge of the flora of the country helps us to finish off the picture; but the whole must in the end be, necessarily, a fabric of the imagination. The formal garden had its beginning many centuries ago. Owing to the admirable pictorial descriptions of the ancient Egyptians, we have a fairly accu rate idea of their gardens six thousand years back. Maspero, in his Dawn of Civilization, tells about a garden a description of which is carved on the tomb of Amten, an important Egyptian nobleman who lived four thousand years before Christ. He built, says Maspero, upon the remainder of the land a magnificent villa, of which he has considerately left us the description. The boundary wall formed a square 350 feet on each face, and consequently con tained a superficial area of square feet. A well-built dwelling-house, furnished with all the necessaries of life, was surrounded by ornamental and fruit bearing trees, - the common palm, the nebek, fig trees, and acacias, - severa1 ponds, neatly bordered with greenery, afforded a habitat for aquatic birds; trellised vines, according to custom, ran in front of the house, and two plots of ground planted with Vines in full bearing supplied the owner with wine every year. An interesting drawing, found in a Theban tomb some forty centuries old, shows, in a curiously combined plan, elevation, and section, a garden almost exactly like that described above. We can see not only all the parts mentioned in the earlier account, but can recognize certain trees and plants, see the birds swim ming on the ponds, and the vines climbing on the trellises. The whole was laid out with paths and terraces, so as to afford shade from the hot sun and shelter from the burning winds; and is an interesting example of the utilitarian and the decorative garden combined. Book The American Flower Garden Companion

Download or read book The American Flower Garden Companion written by Edward Sayers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Flower Garden Companion: Adapted to the Northern States The first and second editions of the Flow Garden Compa nion having received a liberal patronage, will be a sufficient apology for the appearance of the present edition, in an enlarged form, although not materially different in its arrangement. The present Object, as heretofore, of the Flower Garden Companion, is to aid those persons who are desirous of becoming acquainted with the culture of flowers. In its compilation, the aim has been to give, within the compass of a convenient manual for reference, as much useful matter as possible relative to the subject. To this end, each topic has been separately treated, and in as concise a manner as could be done with propriety; and, indeed, in some cases, with a degree of brevity that on the first reading, to the young practitioner may produce a feeling of disappointment, at the apparent deficiency of information; but on a careful reading Of the different articles, it will be found that everything useful (in so small a treatise) has been Spoken of, and that, in many instances, one article acts as a key to another. In the outset, directions are given for laying out flower gardens. In treating on this subject, I have confined myself to the general outline, without entering into minute details, which depend very much upon location and circumstances, as well as upon the taste and means of the proprietor. Book Foreign Trends in American Gardens

Download or read book Foreign Trends in American Gardens written by Raffaella Fabiani Giannetto and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Trends in American Gardens addresses the influence of foreign, designed landscapes on the development of their American counterparts. Including essays from an array of significant scholars in landscape studies, this collection examines topics ranging from the importation of Western and Eastern styles of design and theoretical literature to the adaptation of specific plant types. As the variety of topics and influences discussed demonstrates, the essence of American gardens defies simple definition. Examining the translation, imitation, adaptation, and naturalization of stylistic trends and horticultural specimens into American gardens, the book also dwells on the juxtaposition of the foreign and the native. The volume’s contributors consider the experiences both of immigrants, who contributed through their writing, planting, and design efforts to enhance the character of regional gardens, and of Americans, who traveled abroad and brought back with them a passion for naturalizing exotics for scientific as well as aesthetic reasons. The complexity of American gardens—their combination of the historic and the modern, and of foreign cultures and local values—is also their most distinctive characteristic.
