"American Frontier Liberty" is about self-governing at its most basic and pure form. The author spent the first twenty years of his life on a homestead cattle ranch in a frontier community that was isolated from the rest of the world. In this community, the people governed themselves by a little-known law officially known as consuetudinary law, or customary law. This law is based on people living by customs and traditions rather than written enforceable laws. There are no government intrusions, government enforcement officials, mayor, policeman, judge, or lawyer. Customary law develops naturally as people live by customs and traditions. They live the traditions because they choose to. Think of a community where there are no written rules or regulations and no permits of any kind; where people abide by the traditions because they help keep peace in the community. They live by traditions because it is the right thing to do. It isn't easy to live this way, it requires taking responsibility for one's actions, wants, and needs. It requires people to work together to solve their problems and settle their disputes. In principle, customary law requires people to be honest, be good neighbors, do their own share of the work, and for the adults to teach the traditions to the children. These four principles are the foundation of any customary law. This is the kind of community that the author lived in. He tells the stories of his own generation, his father's generation, and his grandfather's generation, and how they applied the law to live peacefully for generations. He stressed the process-the moving frontier line-and the impact it had on pioneers going through the process. He also stressed results, especially that American democracy was the primary result, along with egalitarianism, a lack of interest in high culture, and violence. "American democracy was born of no theorist's dream; it was not carried in the Susan Constant to Virginia, nor in the Mayflower to Plymouth. It came out of the American forest, and it gained new strength each time it touched a new frontier," said Turner. In the thesis, the American frontier established liberty by releasing Americans from European mindsets and eroding old, dysfunctional customs. The frontier had no need for standing armies, established churches, aristocrats or nobles. There was no landed gentry who controlled most of the land and charged heavy rents and fees. Frontier land was practically free for the taking. Turner first announced his thesis in a paper entitled "The Significance of the Frontier in American History", delivered to the American Historical Association in 1893 in Chicago. He won wide acclaim among historians and intellectuals. Turner elaborated on the theme in his advanced history lectures and in a series of essays published over the next 25 years, published along with his initial paper as The Frontier in American History.

It is the personal account of the author, Jon Garate, along with various oral histories from the pioneer era through the homestead era. This describes the purest form of liberty and self-governing that can exist. Here we see the Triangle of Liberty depicted on the cover—the triangle being one of the strongest geometric forms known. Liberty is supported by a triangle mounted on the great foundation stones of customary common law on one side and freedom from government on the other. The minuteman at the right of the Triangle of Liberty is taken from a picture of the author in 1964. The upper background picture is the author’s family homestead in 1980, taken from a point on the north base of Spanish Springs Peak, an extinct volcano in northeast California. The view is looking across the Madeline Plains to the northwest. The white building to the left of the triangle is the original homestead house built in 1910. The lower background picture is of the homestead workshop around 1950. This picture is looking east from the ranch house toward the shop, which is the larger central structure with the A-frame structure in front. The shop was the first structure built on the homestead in 1909. The A-frame is the smokehouse for curing meat. The structure to the right of the shop is the chicken house. To the center right is the old horse-drawn light-freight wagon, which was the first vehicle driven by the author as a young boy. The person on the right is the author’s father, Thomas Jefferson Garate (1906–1988). On his left is the author’s mother, Faye “Haley” Garate (1920–2016). The chickens are unnamed.
