Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Foreign Service It was followed by the reappearance, in the War Department at Washington, of the same habit of taking moneys from the grantees of concessions which the commissioner of the State Department had illustrated and defended at the Austrian capital, and which the Government by its action had seemed to sanction and reward. When General Grant addressed to Congress his last annual message at the close of our Centennial year, the Presidential ques tion was still unsettled, and it seemed not improbable that the great party which had intrusted to his keeping the honor of the republic had been helplessly wrecked by the errors of his Administration. General Grant had been elected in 1868 by 214 electoral votes against 71 cast for Governor Seymour; and in 1876 that large major ity had vanished, and the fate of the party hung upon a single vote. Book American Consular Service Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Consular Service Classic Reprint written by United States Department Of State and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Consular Service Diplomatic officers must establish and maintain in the capitals 111 which they reside a position befitting the commanding prestige of the United States among nations. A similar, though possibly less exigent, duty, devolves u'pon consular officers in the communities to which they are assigned. Adaptability, balance, tact, sound judgment, rigid impartiality, and integrity, as well as thorough general education and technical proficiency, are essential factors in the success of each. Each service imposes a strict discipline upon its members. They must perform without question the duties assigned to them by the Secretary of State, and proceed without demur to whatever parts of the World they may be ordered. Long hours and hard work are frequently the rule: Officers are also expected to perform, and do perform, their duty without regard for discomfort or personal danger. The reward of the Foreign Service is not a money reward. The salaries paid to officers in the Diplomatic Service are inadequate and those in the Consular Service are not comparable with the salaries attained by the conspicuously successful in business. The appeal, however is not to those Who seek only material gain. The foreign Service offers instead the cultural advantages of foreign travel, active contact with leaders in other lands, and the' opportunity of distinguished patriotic achievement. It offers the spiritual gratification to be found in the path of public service and responsibility. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in American Foreign Policy In my effort to simplify, emphasize, and corre late, I am aware that I have created a picture more definite, clear, and one-sided than the situ ation warrants. Truth to tell, our dangers should not be painted black, nor our hopes white; our possible adversaries are not entirely actuated by ambition and greed, nor are we ourselves made in the image of angels. A true picture would be a rather confused blur of different shades of gray. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Why Not Victory

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why Not Victory: A Fresh Look at American Foreign Policy For the American Conservative, there is no difficulty in identifying the day's overriding political challenge; it is to preserve and extend freedom. If concern for this challenge were not felt by conservatives there would be no need to articulate our position, to argue for it, or to argue against those who disagree. There would be no need for this book, whose purpose is to extend in words the concern felt by one conservative about the forces in the world and our nation which are working against the preservation and extension of freedom. If I were alone in this feeling, one might charge me with being overly obsessed with an unwarranted concern for our freedoms, but there is no sensation of aloneness in this. Book Policy and Power

Download or read book Policy and Power written by Ruhl Bartlett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Policy and Power: Two Centuries of American Foreign Relations It is a truism regarding the study of human affairs that the past, present, and future merge in the thinking of any individual. His beliefs about the past, about human experience, will largely determine his estimate of events and trends of the eeting present, and this estimate will not be separate from his vision of the future. It seems obvious, therefore, that accurate knowledge about the past is essential for any rational View of what constitutes the good society, and for any hope of progress toward that goal. Since every situation in the world today has somehow emerged from its antecedents, no world problem can be understood except in the context of its origin and development. If history throws no light on the pathway of the future, the human race is doomed indeed to walk in darkness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of American Foreign Policy: A History American foreign policy from 1775 to 1889; to trace the growth in that period of the basic guidelines - isolationism, neutrality, and the Mon roe Doctrine; to note the interplay of ideals and self-interest in external affairs; and to analyze the constitutional conflict between the executive and legislative branches for control of foreign policy. By concentrating on those topics, I have found it possible to move quickly through the first century of independence and still extract the lessons it has to teach.
