Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Because of Race, Mica Pollock tackles a long-standing and fraught debate over racial inequalities in America's schools. Which denials of opportunity experienced by students of color should be remedied? Pollock exposes raw, real-time arguments over what inequalities of opportunity based on race in our schools look like today--and what, if anything, various Americans should do about it. Pollock encountered these debates while working at the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights in 1999-2001. For more than two years, she listened to hundreds of parents, advocates, educators, and federal employees talk about the educational treatment of children and youth in specific schools and districts. People debated how children were spoken to, disciplined, and ignored in both segregated and desegregated districts, and how children were afforded or denied basic resources and opportunities to learn. Pollock discusses four rebuttals that greeted demands for everyday justice for students of color inside schools and districts. She explores how debates over daily opportunity provision exposed conflicting analyses of opportunity denial and harm worth remedying. Because of Race lays bare our habits of argument and offers concrete suggestions for arguing more successfully toward equal opportunity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often hear about the growing divide between rich and poor in America. This compelling exposé, backed by up-to-date research, locates the source of this trend where we might least expect to find it—in our schools. Written for a wide audience, Tearing Down the Gates is a powerful indictment of American education that shows how schools, colleges, and universities exacerbate inequality by providing ample opportunities for advantaged students while shutting the gates on the poor—and even the middle class. Peter Sacks tells the stories of young people and families as they struggle to negotiate the educational system. He introduces students like Ashlea, who grew up in a trailer park and who would like to attend college, though she faces constant obstacles that many of her more privileged classmates can't imagine. Woven throughout with voices of Americans both rich and poor, Tearing Down the Gates describes a disturbing situation that has the potential to undermine the American dream, not just for some, but for all of us. At the heart of this book is a question of justice, and Sacks demands that we take a hard look at what equal opportunity really means in the United States today.

Book Unequal Opportunity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bruce Mitchell
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2002-04-30
  • ISBN : 0313011389
  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book Unequal Opportunity written by Bruce Mitchell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-04-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors discuss the history of American education and its goals in a democratic society. The nature of the criticisms of public education and the motivations of the critics are examined. The final section includes an analysis of the significance of the public education system's possible demise, a suggested plan of action for the improvement of public education, and a Guerrilla Handbook which offers suggestions for parents wishing to secure the best possible public education for their children. John Dewey said What the best and wisest parent wants for his own child, that must the community want for all its children. Any other idea for our schools is narrow and unlovely; acted upon, it destroys our democracy. The authors argue that the nation's public schools must be serious about demanding equal educational opportunities without regard for affluence level, religious background, race, gender, or ethnicity.

Book Education Policy and Equal Opportunity in Japan

Download or read book Education Policy and Equal Opportunity in Japan written by Akito Okada and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many societies today, educational aims or goals are commonly characterized in terms of “equality,” “equal opportunity,” “equal access” or “equal rights,” the underlying assumption being that “equality” in some form is an intelligible and sensible educational ideal. Yet, there are different views and lively debates about what sort of equality should be pursued; in particular, the issue of equality of educational opportunity has served as justification for much of the postwar restructuring of educational systems around the world. The author explores different interpretations of the concept of equality of educational opportunity in Japan, especially as applied to post-World War II educational policies. By focusing on the positions taken by key actors such as the major political parties, central administrative bodies, teachers’ unions, and scholars, he describes how their concepts have developed over time and in what way they relate to the making of educational policy, especially in light of Japan’s falling birthrate and aging society.
