In this study the author examines some of the most influential playwrights of the period. He explores a whole range of drama, from the realistic melodrama of Lillian Hellman's Little Foxes and the poetic and lyric realism of Saroyan's The Time of Your Life to the comedies of Kaufman and Hart and the expressionism of The Adding Machine by Elmer Rice.

Book The American Drama Since 1918

Download or read book The American Drama Since 1918 written by Joseph Wood Krutch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Drama Since 1918: An Informal History The purpose of this book is to offer both a connected account and some critical evaluation of playwriting in America since the World War. It is by no means a complete record of theatrical production. Such a record for most of the period covered may be found in Mr. Burns Mantle's annual volumes. It does not always mention all the plays written by even highly successful or important authors. In certain cases the plays seem to me to have little or no significance. On the other hand the intention is to provide what the subtitle promises - an informal history - rather than an essay on this or that aspect of the contem porary American drama. A great many plays are discussed and the attempt is made to provide a con tinuous account of the course of playvvriting in the United States during the two decades ending with the present. I cannot, of course, hope that anyone will be entirely satisfied with either my inclusions or my omissions. For the task which I have undertaken. Book American Playwrights 1880 1945

Download or read book American Playwrights 1880 1945 written by William W. Demastes and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years 1880 to 1945, American theatre grew up, moving from entertainment-driven motives and melodramatic formulas to serious confrontations with issues of its time and to an experimentation with forms that would allow those confrontations to be frank and earnest. Many of the playwrights of this time wrote works of lasting significance, while others have impacted the work of contemporary dramatists. This reference is a guide to American theatre during this formative period. The volume includes alphabetically arranged entries for 40 American playwrights active between 1880 and 1945. Included are the most frequently canonized figures, as well as previously neglected women and minority playwrights whose work is a vital part of American theatre history. Each entry includes a biographical overview, a summary of the critical reception of major productions and significant revivals, a critical assessment of the playwright's career, and a listing of archival, primary, and secondary bibliographic material.
