Book Bilateral Diplomacy and EU Membership

Download or read book Bilateral Diplomacy and EU Membership written by Sandra Sonnleitner and published by Nomos Verlag. This book was released on 2018-05-17 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Negotiating Europe

Download or read book Negotiating Europe written by O. Calligaro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the promotion of Europeanness, which aims to arouse feelings of belonging to the European Union. It demonstrates that the promotion of Europeanness at the EU level does not constitute an overarching identity policy that imposes a homogenous interpretation of European identity. Rather, it is a process of negotiation in which various entrepreneurs of Europeanness within and outside the EU institutions invent and communicate representations of Europe. Both the negotiation and the multilayered representations of Europe that it produces are investigated through three case studies: the academia and the historians, European heritage, and the iconography of the euro.

Book Europe and the Collapse of Yugoslavia

Download or read book Europe and the Collapse of Yugoslavia written by Branislav Radeljic and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992 Yugoslavia finally succumbed to civil war, collapsing under the pressure of its inherent ethnic tensions. Existing accounts of Yugoslavia s dissolution, however, pay little regard to the troubled relationship between the Yugoslav Federation and the European Community (EC) prior to the crisis in the early 1990s, and the instability this created. Here, Branislav Radeljic offers an empirical analysis of the EC s relations with Yugoslavia from the late sixties, when Yugoslavia was under the presidency of Josep Broz Tito, through to the collapse of the Yugoslav federation in 1992, after the rise of Slobodan Milo evi? and the beginning of the Yugoslav Wars. Radeljic explores the economic, political and social elements of these discords, and also places emphasis on the role of Slovenes, Croats and other diasporas focusing on their capacity to affect policy-making at a Europe-wide level. Radeljic argues convincingly that a lack of direction and inadequate political mechanisms within the EC enabled these non-state actors to take centre-stage, and shows how EC paralysis precipitated a bloody conflict in the Balkan region."

Book East European Diasporas Migration and Cosmopolitanism

Download or read book East European Diasporas Migration and Cosmopolitanism written by Ulrike Ziemer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the collapse of the communist regimes in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, there were considerable migration flows, the migrations and subsequent diasporas often having special characteristics given the relative lack of migration in communist times and the climate of increasing nationalism which had the potential of working against multiculturalism. This book explores these migrations and diasporas, and examines the nature of the associated cosmopolitanism.

Book Liberal Forces in Twentieth Century Yugoslavia

Download or read book Liberal Forces in Twentieth Century Yugoslavia written by Ladislav Bevc and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberal Forces in Twentieth Century Yugoslavia: Memoirs of Ladislav Bevc spans 80 years of his professional and political life: from the early years of his childhood in the large family of a civil servant, to his studies in Vienna and the interruption of his professional career by military service at the Eastern and Western front under the detested Austrian flag, to a flourishing career in the liberated homeland of Yugoslavia. Born in Skocijan, Slovenia, he graduated as a civil engineer from the Technical University in Vienna. In World War I, he served on the front in Russia and France. Following the war, Ladislav Bevc focused his life on politics, civic organizations, and the engineering profession. In Ljubljana, he served as a city councilman and was active in civic and academic affairs. He helped establish a new University and resisted Communist subversion in the Sokol Patriotic Gymnast Association. Following the German invasion in World War II, he joined the resistance movement of General Dragoljub Mihajlovich, which led to encounters with the Gestapo and eventual political emigration. In 1949, he immigrated to California, where he remained active in the efforts to liberate Yugoslavia from the Communists and rescued his family, who had been held hostage. In the free world, he organized the Slovenian liberal émigrés in the Slovenian Democratic Party and was instrumental in rebuilding the Yugoslav Sokol in the Free World. He practiced civil engineering in the United States, where he was elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He died on November 29, 1988.
