Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive study of consultation procedures within the dispute settlement system of the World Trade Organization. It offers in-depth analysis of diplomatic practices relating to what has been a poorly explored and researched part of the Dispute Settlement Understanding. Findings are supported by interviews with representatives of several Member States. The author analyses its relationship to panel proceedings and uses comparative studies with other parts of international law. The study particularly focuses on a Chinese perspective which has placed strong emphasis upon consultation and negotiated settlements. With its theoretical and practical insights, the book will be of equal use to scholars, diplomats and government officials alike.

Download or read book Lord Robert Cecil written by Gaynor Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyer, politician, diplomat and leading architect of the League of Nations; Robert Cecil, 1st Viscount Cecil of Chelwood, was one of Britain's most significant statesmen of the twentieth century. His views on international diplomacy cover the most important aspects of British, European and American foreign policy concerns of the century, including the origins and consequences of the two world wars, the disarmament movement, the origins and early course of the Cold War and the first steps towards European integration. His experience of the First World War and the huge loss of life it entailed provoked Cecil to spend his life championing the ethos behind and work of the League of Nations: a role for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1937. Yet despite his prominence in the international peace movement, Cecil has never been the focus of an academic biography. Cecil has perhaps been judged unfairly due to his association with the League of Nations, which has since been generally regarded as a failure. However, recent academic research has highlighted the contribution of the League to the creation of many of the institutions and precepts that have, since the Second World War, become accepted parts of the international system, not least the United Nations. In particular, Cecil and his work on arms control lay the basis for understanding this new area of international activity, which would bear fruit during the Cold War and after. Through an evaluation of Cecil's political career, the book also assesses his reputation as an idealist and the extent to which he had a coherent philosophy of international relations. This book suggests that in reality Cecil was a Realpolitiker pragmatist whose attitudes evolved during two key periods: the interwar period and the Cold War. It also proposes that where a coherent philosophy was in evidence, it owed as much to the moral and political code of the Cecil family as to his own experiences in politics. Cecil's social and familial world is therefore considered alongside his more public life.

Book Peace Parks

Download or read book Peace Parks written by Saleem Hassan Ali and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peace Parks examines ways in which environmental cooperation in multijurisdictional conservation areas may help resolve political and territorial conflicts. Its analysis and case studies of transboundary peace parks focus on how sharing of physical space and management responsibilities can build and sustain peace among countries. It examines roles played by governments, military, civil society, scientists, and conservationists, and their effects on both ecological management and potential for peace-building in these areas. After an historical and theoretical overview that explores economic, political, and social theories that support peace parks concept, and discussion of bioregional management for science and economic development, the book presents case studies of existing parks and proposals for future parks--Publisher's description.

Book The World America Made

Download or read book The World America Made written by Robert Kagan and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Kagan, the New York Times bestselling author of Of Paradise and Power and one of the country’s most influential strategic thinkers, reaffirms the importance of United States’s global leadership in this timely and important book. Upon its initial publication, The World America Made became one of the most talked about political books of the year, influencing Barack Obama’s 2012 State of the Union address and shaping the thought of both the Obama and Romney presidential campaigns. In these incisive and engaging pages, Kagan responds to those who anticipate—or even long for—a post-American world order by showing what a decline in America’s influence would truly mean for the United States and the rest of the world, as the vital institutions, economies, and ideals currently supported by American power wane or disappear. As Kagan notes, it has happened before: one need only to consider the consequences of the breakdown of the Roman Empire and the collapse of the European order in World War I. This book is a powerful warning that America need not and dare not decline by committing preemptive superpower suicide.
