Book American Comprehensive Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Comprehensive Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by M. A. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Comprehensive Arithmetic IN this work, the divisions of arithmetic are presented in their natural order. The fundamental operations upon integers, common fractions, decimals, denominate numbers, and numbers expressed by letters, are followed by their applications to business and to various employments. The introduction of the chapter on literal quantities is somewhat of an innovation, but is in accord with the views of leading teachers, and is based upon sound principles. The elementary parts of algebra should be studied before the advanced parts of arithmetic, because they are more easily com prehended, and because they afford valuable assistance in difficult problems. For the same reasons, the solution of many classes of problems should be taught by algebraic processes, before they are taught by the intricate methods required by analysis. The fact, too, that most pupils must leave school quite early, is a strong reason for introducing into arithmetic the elements of algebra and the conclusions of geometry. Download or read book Complete Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by Samuel Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Arithmetic A complete arithmetic should meet all the ordinary demands of the elementary school. It may omit that which is non-essential and all matter that properly belongs to textbooks for secondary schools; but it should include a full treatment of all important topics taught in the elementary school, and a limited treatment of those of minor importance. This book is intended for a complete arithmetic, to be used either with or without the authors Elementary Arithmetic. The work is divided into three parts. Part One, after giving a complete treatment of the fundamental operations, covers the work ordinarily found in the-sixth year. Part One, after reviewing the subjects of Bills and Accounts, Denominate Numbers, and Practical Measurements, covers the work of the seventh year. Part Three covers the work of the eighth year. The aim of this book is threefold: (1) To give the pupil skill in the art of computation. (2) To make him a good mathematician. (3) To give him a working knowledge of modern business methods. The first necessarily suggests an abundance of graded work. The second requires both inductive and deductive thought. The method, therefore, is inductive in the development of all mathematical principles, and deductive in their application. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Arithmetic: Oral and Written Great pains have also been taken to make this work superior to all others in its typographical arrangement and finish, and in the general tastefulness of its mechanical execution. The author takes pleasure in acknowledging his indebtedness for many valuable suggestions received from teachers of experience and others interested in the work of education; especially to Joseph Ficklin, Ph. D., Professor of Mathematics in the University of Missouri, by whom chiefly the sections upon Involution, Evolution, Progressions, and Annuities have been prepared as well as to Henry Kiddle, A. M., Superintendent of Schools in the city of New York, for valuable assistance, especially in the higher departments of Percentage, and for important suggestions in relation to other parts of the work. How nearly the author has accomplished his purpose, to give to the public, in one volume, a clear, scientific, and complete treatise on this subject, combining and systematizing many real improvements of practical value and importance to the business man and the student, the intelligent and experienced educator must decide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Arithmetic Complete While deficiencies of early training may be remedied by its use, it is not intended as a textbook for those who are approaching the subject for the first time. Neither is it intended to take the place of any of the many excellent works now in use in the grades for the purpose of develop in g a general understanding of mathematical principles. Such books, while they have satisfactorily discharged this function, have failed to develop the accuracy and facility so vitally essential in commercial calculations. Other commercial arithmetics have tried to overcome this weakness by following similar plans of instruction in abridged form. Rational Arithmetic follows a very different plan. It is purely a vocational work and therefore places greater emphasis on the how than the why. It is a reference book of commercial Operations, rather than a method of presentation, and should be so used. Part One is a collection of practice exercises arranged along the lines of the generally accepted order of presentation.
