Film, (2) the largest possible picture with greatest screen brilliancy, (3) inter changeability with silent films without adjustment of the projector picture aperture, (4) the most economic and efficient use of the light available for picture projection, (5) greatest volume range for any given amplifier gain, (6) most flexible method of production of 16 mm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, 1936, Vol. 17: A Technical and Educational Publication of the Motion Picture Photography My own connection with the work has not, however, been so intimately concerned with this phase as with the actual photographing. There are naturally many practical differences between working in black-and-white and working in color; the whole thing may be best summed up by saying that for success in color, one must pay careful attention to details which are relatively unimportant in ordinary still work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, Vol. 18: March, 1937 Tests made with it by Victor Milner, in prepara tion for his present production, for instance, have indicated its superiority to either previous method in scenes in which any considerable area is included. Hitherto, regardless of the method used, there was generally an increase in contrast, and little detail could be preserved except in the immediate foreground and in highlights. In closer shots often all that would be visible would be the actors' faces and shadowy figures moving against a black background. Using the new film, the scene appears much more nearly as it would normally appear on a moon lit night, With a natural amount of detail visible in the shadows, and a considerably broader scale of gradation. Download or read book The American Cinematographer Vol 2 written by Silas E. Snyder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Cinematographer, Vol. 2: February 1, 1922 At that time we were just beginning to see and realize the possibility of vivifying a picture production through art in photography. Attempts had been made in America, as well as abroad, to bring forth light effects and a sense of loom position to beautify the appearance of pictures which were at that time rather crude and almost childish in detail. The conversation on this subject drifted, and being a cameraman, I was, of course, very enthusiastic, as I could foresee the great possibility of expressing the artistic sense which I knew was latent in the very soul of many of the boys who were just merely cranking at that time. Several pictures had been praised or criticized, ao cording to their merit, when someone mentioned the name of a producer, who, with great sincerity was then striving to put in his productions the artistic and photo graphic touches which, in his estimation, would appeal to the cultured public, and also please the less intelligent or uneducated audiences.
