Book American Churches and Southern Africa

Download or read book American Churches and Southern Africa written by Columba Aham Nnorom and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'As far as I am aware, [t]his book is the first to explore the engagement of the churches in the struggle for freedom and de-colonization in Southern Africa in the 1960-1990 period. His focus is on our attempts to influence public policy, particularly in the area of legislation. He comes at his task with scholarly rigor and with the passion of a Pan-Africanist. He is particularly critical of the torpor and apathy of the churches in the face of white supremacy and settler colonialism. The churches were by and large collaborators in those systemic injustices... Father Nnorom is right to call us to account for our moral lassitude. Nevertheless, we can take encouragement from what we did accomplish. Apartheid is ended. The Portuguese colonial system is finished. Enormous problems, political and economic, face the newly independent states. We cannot abandon our concern for peacemaking, reconstruction and development now. I would hope that this book will serve as a reminder of the accomplishments as well as the shortcomings of our efforts to bring about liberation in Southern Africa. It deserves to be widely read.' from the Foreword by The Rev. Edgar Lockwood, Former Director, Washington Office on Africa.

Book excerpt: "At a strategic time in South Africa's history, the Christian history which is absolutely basic to all developments, is presented in a comprehensive and objective way. Too little attention is given to the influence of religion in socio-political accounts. This is a creative and much-needed contribution to scholarship and general knowledge. . . . An outstanding work."--Dean S. Gilliland, Fuller Theological Seminary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the transplantation of a creed devised by and for African Americans--the African Methodist Episcopal Church--that was appropriated and transformed in a variety of South African contexts. Focusing on a transatlantic institution like the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the book studies the complex human and intellectual traffic that has bound African American and South African experience. It explores the development and growth of the African Methodist Episcopal Church both in South Africa and America, and the interaction between the two churches. This is a highly innovative work of comparative and religious history. Its linking of the United States and African black religious experiences is unique and makes it appealing to readers interested in religious history and black experience in both the United States and South Africa.

Book The African American Church in Birmingham Alabama 1815 1963

Download or read book The African American Church in Birmingham Alabama 1815 1963 written by Wilson Fallin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1997 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive history of the African American church in a community which played a crucial role in the civil rights movement. While the church in Birmingham was indeed a spiritual community, it was also the central institution in the African American community at large, providing leadership as well as economic, political, and social functions in a segregated racist society. This historical analysis begins in the period of slavery with the development of a particularly African American version of Christianity from the merging of African and white evangelical religions. As African Americans moved to Birmingham from the black belt of Alabama, they formed churches which were spiritual communities where African Americans sought hope, security, moral discipline, and self-esteem in the face of racism and segregation. In addition, the study illustrates how churches established institutions that met educational, benevolent, and economic needs. The study concludes with a look at the leadershipprovided by churchmen in the civil rights movement, who brought Martin Luther King, Jr. to the city for massive civil rights demonstrations. (Ph.D. dissertation, University of Alabama, 1995; revised with new preface, foreword, introduction, afterword)

Book Robert R Church Jr and the African American Political Struggle

Download or read book Robert R Church Jr and the African American Political Struggle written by Darius J. Young and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Conference on African American Studies, Inc., C. Calvin Smith Book Award This volume highlights the little-known story of Robert R. Church Jr., the most prominent black Republican of the 1920s and 1930s. Tracing Church’s lifelong crusade to make race an important part of the national political conversation, Darius Young reveals how Church was critical to the formative years of the civil rights struggle. A member of the black elite in Memphis, Tennessee, Church was a banker, political mobilizer, and civil rights advocate who worked to create opportunities for the black community despite the notorious Democrat E. H. “Boss” Crump’s hold over Memphis politics. Spurred by the belief that the vote was the most pragmatic path to full citizenship in the United States, Church founded the Lincoln League of America, which advocated for the interests of black voters in over thirty states. He was instrumental in establishing the NAACP throughout the South as it investigated various incidents of racial violence in the Mississippi Delta. At the height of his influence, Church served as an advisor for Presidents Harding and Coolidge, generating greater participation of and recognition for African Americans in the Republican Party. Church’s life and career offer a window into the incremental, behind-the-scenes victories of black voters and leaders during the Jim Crow era that set the foundation for the more nationally visible civil rights movement to follow.
