In the L gos of Love is a collection of essays that grew out of a 2013 conference on Catholic intellectual life co-sponsored by the University of Dayton and the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California. The essays, written by scholars of theology, history, law, and media studies of religion, trace the history of this intellectual tradition in order to craft new tools for understanding the present day and approaching the future. Each essay explores both the promise of Catholic intellectual life and its various contemporary predicaments. How does a changed media landscape affect the way Catholicism is depicted, and the way its adherents understand and communicate among themselves? What resources can the tradition offer for reflection on new understandings of sexuality and gender? How can and should US Catholic intellectual life embrace and enhance-and introduce students to-the new ways in which Catholicism is becoming a more global tradition? What is the role of scholars in disciplines beyond theology? Of scholars who are not Catholic? Of scholars in universities not sponsored by Catholic religious orders or dioceses? By providing context for and proposing responses to these questions, the scholars invite discussion and reflection from a wide range of readers who have one important thing in common-a stake in sustaining a vibrant, flourishing intellectual tradition.

Shaped by anti-communist sentiment and responsive to American cultural trends, the Catholic community adopted "strategies of domestic containment," stressing the close unity between the Church and the "American way of life." A focus on the unchanging character of God's law as expressed in social hierarchies of authority, race, and gender provided a public visage of unity and uniformity. However, the emphasis on American values mainstreamed into the community the political values of personal rights, equality, acceptance of the arms race, and muted the Church's inherited social vision. The result was a deep ambivalence over the forces of secularization. The Catholic community entered a transitional stage in which "those on the right" and "those on the left" battled for control of the Church's vision. The tipping point began in the 1940s and firmly took hold in 1968. Of the 67.3 million recorded Catholics in the United States, 68% and growing are in fact Cafeteria Catholics. The term is a reference to cafeteria style dining, in which people thoughtfully select the foods they want. They are Catholics who in good conscience, choose not to totally adhere to or agree with every dogma and rule of the Church. Of those Americans who say they are Catholic, only 24% attend Sunday Mass (CARA Catholic Poll.) An ABC News/Washington Post poll of American Catholics conducted in March, 2013 found that 60% of Catholics described the church as hopelessly "out of touch" with the views of Catholics in America. The major conflict within the Church today has manifested through a number of facets. First, there is a conflict between papal authority and an individual's Catholic conscience. Secondly, there is the conflict between the authority of the Pope and the bishops-the Magisterium (which is the teaching authority of the Church) - And then, there is the authority of the majority of Catholic theologians who are not part of the Magisterium. Clearly, these areas point to the emergent storm within the American Catholic Church. It pits the reformers against a conservative front. Barring a sea of change, the American Cafeteria Catholic phenomenon shows no signs of letting up. It will only continue to widen the schism and increase the ongoing turmoil within and exodus from the Church. Hopefully, this book will encourage all Christians to recalibrate their God concept as distinct from Institutional Religion.
