Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Books With Tails to 'Em: A Private Pocket List of the Incomplete or Unfinished American Periodicals, Transactions, Memoirs, Judicial Reports, Laws, Journals, Legislative Documents, and Other Continuations and Works in Progress, Supplied to the British Museum and Other Libraries The importance of American Periodical Literature is great, but the dith culty in completing and defining it is almost insurmountable. Its infant mortality, especially in the South and West, from the time of Franklin's General Magazine printed in Philadelphia in 1741, to the productions of Hall, Gallagher, and Flint, if not much later, is matched only by its pre cocity, and, like many other rapidly passing events in new countries, is almost beyond record. Still an imperfect register is better than none, and it is hoped that this little index register may eventually lead up to a thorough bibliography of the subject. The number of periodicals that have survived only a single part or a single volume is out of all proportion, but short lived as they were, they are generallyas round and full of meat as chesnuts, leading one to the conviction that a hundred volumes of these short-lived beings, of various dates and places, in literary and historical value, will far outweigh an equal number of volumes of long continued series. It has been said that a very large proportion of the best periodical writers write themselves out in ten articles. That in fact sometimes the best of them ex haust themselves and their subjects long before they exhaust their readers. But however this may be it is certain that this class of publications is exceedingly exacting. And requires especial attention of librarians. Lest some of them lag behind, or drop out of sight and memory. Particularly is this true of irregular and occasional publications, like a large part of this list. They should therefore be thoroughly defined, and when discontinued be so marked. By dates, volumes, or numbers, and then banished from the record of 'continuations' to the catalogue ascomplete works. A periodical however unfinished is complete when dead, but if dead and incomplete it is sometimes difficult to procure the missing parts. With a list like this at band wherein the deficiencies are made a note of they may generally be found, for everything literary is believed to come round once in a time, though it may have no regular cycle like comets. The experienced col lector has learned to labor and to wait, well knowing that books are half found when one knows precisely what is sought.
