Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Biography, Vol. 5 The vessel, winch brought over Archibald Stark and his party, arrived in Boston, about the time of the alarm of the prevalence of the small pox. The account we follow, places it in 1720, and states that the vessel, in consequence of hav ing the smallpox on board, was not allowed an entry in Boston. As 1721 was the year, when the smallpox committed the most formida ble ravages in Boston, having been brought in a vessel from the West Indies, it is not unlikely, that the party of Stark arrived in Boston Bay, while the panic produced by the ravages of the disease was at its height. At all events, they were refused permission to land in Boston; and they passed the winter on the banks of the Ken nebec in Maine, and near the spot where vviscas set was afterwards settled. The following year they removed to Nutfield, where thev had been preceded by the first emigrating company of their countrymen. Here a permanent and flourishing settlement was founded, which took the name of Londonderry in 1722, in memory of the place 01 their abode in Ireland. Judging rather from success in the execution of a plan, than from the inventive genius and foresight displayed in its formation, mankind are apt to give to wild but fortunate daring the praise, which is due only to judgment, activity, and skill, even when unsuccessfully exerted. It has been well observed of Columbus, that, had he yielded to the entreaties of his crew but a few hours sooner than he had determined to do, his name, if it had survived at all, would have been remembered only as that of a half insane projector. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of American Biography, Vol. 1 The great political consequences of the war of the revolution have thrown into comparative oh scurity the previous military history of the British North American Colonies. In reality, however, the military efforts made by those Colonies, not only in the Seven Years' war, but in that of 1744, were of great importance. Large forces were kept on foot; distant and important expeditions were undertaken with success; valuable con quests were achieved; and, on more than one occasion, a very decisive influence on the politics of Europe was exercised by the colonial govern ments. Great importance would have been at tached to these transactions, but for the greater importance and interest of those, which followed so close upon them, in the war of the Revolution. But it is not the least of the reasons, why we ought to study the history of these earlier wars, that they formed in reality the great school, in which the military leaders of the Revolution were trained.
