Miller, who has the well earned reputation of being the most cau tious writer on bee-matters, because he seldom advances a statement of which he is not absolutely positive, made the assertion, at the December meeting of the chicago-northwestern bee-keepers' Association, that when bees rear a young queen to replace or supersede the old mother, they rarely if ever destroy the latter, but allow her usually to die a natural death from old age. They stood on their summer stands with corn fodder around, but not in front, and the upper story filled with straw. Since the adop tion of chaff-packing my bees have come out all right every spring, except as above mentioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, Vol. 7: 1871-72 I now began to suspect that there might be something in the young queens themselves either in their actions, or in their odor, or their voice, 01 want of voice, which made the bees indisposed to disturb them. Therefore, after unqueening the hive, I introduced just hatched queens at once, and found them almost invariably well received. The bees would occasionally seem to manifest some surprise at their presence, and probably, if they could have Spoken their feelings in words, would have said inquiringly - does your mother know you are out 2. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Bee Journal, 1872, Vol. 7 In the October numba' of the American Bee Journal, there is an article under the caption of The Coming Bee, upon which I wish to offer a few thoughts. I do so the more freely, because the writer requests any one who may have had experience with the kind of bees he describes, to report. I do not know what special qualities he may have found in bees less than half Italian; but my observation of that -kind of bees, has given me a very poor Opinion of them.' Download or read book The American Bee Journal Vol 8 written by G. S. Wagner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, Vol. 8: 1872-73 The extracted honey we sent to Philadelphia. Our bees did not do much 011 white clover, but when basswood came in bloom (july 15th), the bees kept us busy emptying out honey. \v e were fairly swimming in honey for about two weeks. We 'never saw bees gather honey faster than they did from basswood blossoms. Good swarms would fill their hives in two days when they had empty comb. Now we see the necessity of urging the bee keepers to cultivate the basswood. There is a great quantity of small basswood trees in the woods in this section which we can get to trans plant. Had it not been for basswood. We would not have got any profit from our bees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The American Bee Journal Vol 27 written by Thomas G. Newman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, Vol. 27: January 1, 1891 If the part of the divided colony, which has no queen, is set on a new stand, then Mrs. Harrison's observations would be correct, regarding their quiet condition, after all of the old or field-bees had left this hive and returned to their old loca tion but if this moved-part had a queen, many of the bees would return to their old location, so that, in this case, the queenless part would show the most activity, for the part on the old stand will always show the most activity, whether having the old queen or not. Where a colony has an old or failing queen, with very little brood in the hive, and much of that drone brood, then they will sometimes manifest the restlessness spoken of to some extent, should their queen be taken from them; but I claim that such a colony is not a suitable one to divide for increase.
