Book Children s Attitudes Knowledge and Behaviors Toward Animals

Download or read book Children s Attitudes Knowledge and Behaviors Toward Animals written by Stephen R. Kellert and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic objectives of this research, which involved children in the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th grades, were to describe children's uses and perceptions of animals and to discern possible developmental stages in the evolution of attitudes toward animals. Personal interviews were conducted with 267 children from 16 public schools randomly selected from urban, small city, suburban, and rural areas of the state of Connecticut. Three major developmental stages in the evolution of children's perceptions of animals were found. The first stage, occurring from the 2nd to 5th grade, was characterized by a dramatic increase in emotional concern and general affection for animals. Since very young children were the most exploitative, harsh, and unfeeling of all children in their attitudes toward animals, environmental programs should focus on the affective realm. The transition from fifth to eighth grades witnessed the second major developmental stage--a major expansion in children's intellectual and cognitive understandings of animals. Therefore, factual learning should be emphasized at this stage. The third developmental stage occurred between 8th and 11th grades, during which time children's ethical concern for the welfare and kind treatment of animals increased dramatically. This stage offers the best opportunity for teaching about ethical relationships to animals and the concepts of ecology and wildlife management. (RM).

Book Connection to Nature Deep Ecology and Conservation Social Science

Download or read book Connection to Nature Deep Ecology and Conservation Social Science written by Christian Diehm and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Connection to Nature, Deep Ecology, and Conservation Social Science: Human-Nature Bonding and Protecting the Natural World , Christian Diehm analyzes the relevance of the philosophy of deep ecology to contemporary discussions of human-nature connectedness. Focusing on deep ecologists’ notion of “identification” with nature, Diehm argues that deep ecological theory is less conceptually problematic than is sometimes thought, and offers valuable insights into what a sense of connection to nature entails, what its attitudinal and behavioral effects might be, and how it might be nurtured and developed. This book is closely informed by, and engages at length with, conservation social science, which Diehm draws on to assess the claims of deep ecology theorists, resolve long-standing problems associated with their work, investigate the impacts of time outdoors on human-nature bonding, and critically review the biophilia hypothesis. Emphasizing the foundational role of ecologically-inclusive identities in pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors, Diehm demonstrates that having a sense of connection to nature is more important than many environmental advocates have realized, and that deep ecology has much to add to the increasingly pressing conversations about it.

Book Explorations In Environmental History

Download or read book Explorations In Environmental History written by Samuel P. Hays and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 1998-02-15 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel P. Hays is one of the most distinguished scholars in the field of environmental history and the leading thinker of its first generation. The range and quality of the scholarship collected here reflect his work as a teacher, scholar, and activist writing in environmental history and provide a powerful exclamation point to a long and distinguished career. The depth of Hays's research is evident on every page of this collection. He was not one who published just to publish; he wrote what was important and spoke to the heart of continuing debates about the environment from 1959, with the publication of Conservation and the Gospel of Efficiency to the present day.As well as representing his best work from the past four decades, this collection includes four pieces published here for the first time. One of these, the opening essay, is Hay's autobiographical account of his encounters with many participants in environmental studies and those vigorously involved in contemporary environmental politics. Amid the entire series of environmental dramas that have engaged his attention, he has sought "to establish the case that a perspective of change and evolution over time, the focus of the historian, can be of immense value in informing the ongoing debates over environmental affairs." This arguement runs through this work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded on the premise that zoos are ‘bilingual’—that the zoo, in the shape of its staff and exhibits, and its visitors speak distinct languages—this enlightening analysis of the informal learning that occurs in zoos examines the ‘speech’ of exhibits and staff as well as the discourse of visitors beginning in the earliest years. Using real-life conversations among visitors as a basis for discussion, the authors interrogate children’s responses to the exhibits and by doing so develop an ‘informal learning model’ and a ‘zoo knowledge model’ that prompts suggestions for activities that classroom educators can use before, during, and after a zoo visit. Their analysis of the ‘visitor voice’ informs creative suggestions for how to enhance the educational experiences of young patrons. By assessing visitors’ entry knowledge and their interpretations of the exhibits, the authors establish a baseline for zoos that helps them to refine their communication with visitors, for example in expanding knowledge of issues concerning biodiversity and biological conservation. The book includes practical advice for zoo and classroom educators about positive ways to prepare for zoo visits, engaging activities during visits, and follow-up work that maximizes the pedagogical benefits. It also reflects on the interplay between the developing role of zoos as facilitators of learning, and the ways in which zoos help visitors assimilate the knowledge on offer. In addition to being essential reading for educators in zoos and in the classroom, this volume is full of insights with much broader contextual relevance for getting the most out of museum visits and field trips in general.
