Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Paintings, Studio Appointments, Curios, Bric-a-Brac, an Unique Collection of Finger Rings Etc., Etc., Belonging to William Merritt Chase, N. A., Member of and Ex-President of the Society of American Artist Almost any other painter would need more of an introduction to the American public than William M. Chase. His pictures, his pupils, his active participation in every good work touching the development of native art, and the famous studio in Tenth Street, have made him well known, not only in New York but throughout the country, to everybody in any way interested in art and artists, and his reputation as a painter extends to Paris, London, and the other art centres of Europe. Ever since 1878, when he came to New York, he has been in the front rank of the valiant band of workers who have spread the fame of American painting and made its merit known to 1nanywho, before their advent knew it as little more than a name. Now after eighteen years of service with a long list of honors to his credit, and a generous meed of material success, he announces his intention of breaking camp and seeking a rest in a sojourn abroad. It is not a period of idle voyaging that he proposes for himself, but a rest to be gained by change of scene and change of work. Iwith a com pany of pupils he will go to the great gallery at Madrid, and afterward return to continue his career among us with a new studio and home in that picturesque quarter of our city called Stuyvesant Square. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 bestseller that tells the remarkable story of the generations of American artists, writers, and doctors who traveled to Paris, fell in love with the city and its people, and changed America through what they learned, told by America’s master historian, David McCullough. Not all pioneers went west. In The Greater Journey, David McCullough tells the enthralling, inspiring—and until now, untold—story of the adventurous American artists, writers, doctors, politicians, and others who set off for Paris in the years between 1830 and 1900, hungry to learn and to excel in their work. What they achieved would profoundly alter American history. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor in America, was one of this intrepid band. Another was Charles Sumner, whose encounters with black students at the Sorbonne inspired him to become the most powerful voice for abolition in the US Senate. Friends James Fenimore Cooper and Samuel F. B. Morse worked unrelentingly every day in Paris, Morse not only painting what would be his masterpiece, but also bringing home his momentous idea for the telegraph. Harriet Beecher Stowe traveled to Paris to escape the controversy generated by her book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Three of the greatest American artists ever—sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, painters Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent—flourished in Paris, inspired by French masters. Almost forgotten today, the heroic American ambassador Elihu Washburne bravely remained at his post through the Franco-Prussian War, the long Siege of Paris, and the nightmare of the Commune. His vivid diary account of the starvation and suffering endured by the people of Paris is published here for the first time. Telling their stories with power and intimacy, McCullough brings us into the lives of remarkable men and women who, in Saint-Gaudens’ phrase, longed “to soar into the blue.”

Book American Painting and Its Tradition

Download or read book American Painting and Its Tradition written by John C. Van Dyke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Painting and Its Tradition: As Represented by Inness, Wyant, Martin, Homer, La Farge, Whistler, Chase, Alexander, Sargent The painters about whom these chapters are written helped to make up the period in American painting dating, generally, from about 1878 to, say, 1915. That period has practically closed in the sense that a newer generation with different aims and aspirations has come forward, and the men who broke ground years ago in the Society of American Artists have turned their furrow and had their day. Indeed, those I have chosen to write about herein, with the exception of Sargent, have passed on and passed out. Not only their period but their work has ended. We are now beginning to see them in something like historic perspective. Perhaps, then, the time is opportune for speaking of them as a group and of their in uence upon American art. Not all of the one-me new movement originated and died with these nine men. Dozens of painters became identified with American art just after the Centennial, and many of those who came back from Munich and Paris in the late seventies and the early eighties are still living and producing. But while the nine were by no means the whole count they were certainly representative of the movement, and their works speak for almost every phase of it. The value of the movement to American art can be rightly enough judged from them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris the Beautiful Paris is neither mediaeval nor modern; it refuses to be assigned to any definite chronol ogy; it is unique, and there is a suggestion of a vast realm of life that is aglow with wonderful possibilities. Infinite trains of thought are inspired: one realizes that he is in the centre of art, of scientific activity and discovery, and that he treads on the very threshold of sur prises that may, any morning, quite transform the course of progress. There is a curious sense of satisfaction with one's environment, as being that which contains and offers everything, and stimulates the purposes of life in myriad dirce tions. The French capital is a paradise of beauty it is also a paradise of opportunity. The spirit experiences a sense of liberation from barriers and obstacles inseparable from all other cities or localities; a sense of being set free to observe. Book Footprints of Famous Americans in Paris Classic Reprint

Download or read book Footprints of Famous Americans in Paris Classic Reprint written by John Joseph Conway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Footprints of Famous Americans in Paris There was a very distinguished American wit whose contribution to the sum of his nation's achievement consisted in one sentence which has become historical. Good Americans, said Tom Appleton, when they die go to Paris. Tom Appleton - so called among his intimates - was the Sydney Smith of the Boston society of his day, a big, round-shouldered man with heavy, sombre eyes behind which his audacious humour lay in ambush and enlivened the transcendental seriousness of the Boston of that time. Being only an amateur humorist, he nearly achieved the signal honour of being forgotten in the immortality of his epigram, and it is due to the genial Autocrat Of the Breakfast Table that the name of the man who made a complete character study of his countrymen in eight words has not been forgotten. For, indeed, the end and aim of most Americans for more than a century, whether they could afford it or not, was to go to Paris. Of course, in postponing the time of their visit Tom Appleton exaggerated, as, indeed, all wits do. Still, it was only to point the national aspiration more trenchantly. For it is not too much to say that in those days the stay-at-home Americans were homesick for a sight of the city they had never seen.
