Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the simple assertion that "words matter" in the study of visual art, this comprehensive but eminently readable volume gathers an extraordinary selection of words—painters and sculptors writing in their diaries, critics responding to a sensational exhibition, groups of artists issuing stylistic manifestos, and poets reflecting on particular works of art. Along with a broad array of canonical texts, Sarah Burns and John Davis have assembled an astonishing variety of unknown, little known, or undervalued documents to convey the story of American art through the many voices of its contemporary practitioners, consumers, and commentators. American Art to 1900 highlights such critically important themes as women artists, African American representation and expression, regional and itinerant artists, Native Americans and the frontier, popular culture and vernacular imagery, institutional history, and more. With its hundreds of explanatory headnotes providing essential context and guidance to readers, this book reveals the documentary riches of American art and its many intersecting histories in unprecedented breadth, depth, and detail.

Book A Century of American Landscape Painting 1800 to 1900

Download or read book A Century of American Landscape Painting 1800 to 1900 written by Whitney Museum Of American Art and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of American Landscape Painting, 1800 to 1900: January 19 to February 25, 1938 Arace busy taming the wilderness, wresting a living from the sea, and building a new nation, had little time or surplus wealth for more than the bare necessities of life. The only art for which there was any demand in colonial America was portraiture. The provincial aristocrat had no desire for the higher forms of art, but he wanted himself and his family recorded for posterity. In the words of Benj amin Robert Hayden, disillusioned English exponent of the grand style: Portraiture is always independent of art and has little or nothing to do with it. It is one of the staple manufactures of the Empire. Wherever the British s'ettle, wherever they colonize, they carry, and will always carry, trial by jury, horse racing and portrait painting. Least of all was there any demand for landscape, a quite non-utilitarian form of art, which tells no story, illustrates no historical event, points no moral. The motivation of landscape is as impractical as that of lyric poetry or music - the expression of the artist's vision of nature and the emotions which it arouses in him. This love of nature is the product of an old and settled civilization, not a pioneer one. It had little place in the hard-headed America of colonial days. Book excerpt: "The revised and expanded edition of Nineteenth Century Art: A Critical History embraces many aspects of the so-called 'new' art history - attention to issues of class and gender, reception and spectatorship, racism and Eurocentrism - while at the same time recovering the remarkable vitality, salience and subversiveness of the era's best art. Indeed, the authors insist that there is a profound sympathy between these new perspectives and the art under examination. For it was nineteenth-century artists who first addressed the issues that preoccupy audiences and scholars today: the relation between popular and elite culture, the legacy of the Enlightenment, the question of the canon, and the representation of workers, women and non-whites."--BOOK JACKET.

Book American Painting Of The 19th Century

Download or read book American Painting Of The 19th Century written by Barbara Novak and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1979-11-27 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brilliant study of American art is again available with a new preface by the author, a few corrections in the text, and a revised and updated bibliography. Widely acclaimed for its perception and scholarship, the book concentrates on a number of leading artists, including Washington Allston, Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, Fitz Hugh Lane, William Sidney Mount, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and Albert Pinkham Ryder. Examining each artist in an individual essay, Barbara Novak presents key ideas on the nature of American art of the nineteenth century, framing these ideas with reference to the eighteenth and twentieth centuries and relating American art to American and European traditions. She draws provocative and original conclusions about the roles in American art of spiritualism and mathematics, analyzes not only the painting but nineteenth-century aesthetic theory as well, achieving a unique synthesis of art and literature. Brief biographies of forty-eight artists mentioned in the text are appended and furnish a valuable reference source.
