Book The American Architect Vol 119

Download or read book The American Architect Vol 119 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Architect, Vol. 119: January-June, 1921 The present depression is, of course, one of the aftermaths of the great conflict, and no man can say just how long it will continue. One may only hazard a guess, and risk the prophecy. But it is my per sonal Opinion that most Of the drastic processes of post-war readjustment should be over in the early part Of 1921 and that we may reasonably look for a gradual recrudescence of confidence from that time on. It may be argued that the present chaos in Wall street - which is the barometer Of economic cycles hardly justifies a spirit Of optimism at this time: But my own conviction is, that that is just what it does justify. The great consolation in having things so bad that they cannot be worse, is that they have got to get better. It is blackest before the dawn, and swift as have been the disillusionments of recent months, the restoration Of confidence will be swifter still when it starts, for the world reacts to prosperity as its rightful heritage, but has no use for trouble. With a return Of confidence money will be easier, building loans more readily available, and to em ploy Webster's famous figure (though times are not so bad as when he used it) The corpse Of public credit will spring to its feet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Architect and the Architectural Review, Vol. 121: January to June 1922 Again, while a great Gothic cathedral may be in place in very few cities, I have my doubts as to whether it is in place in many of the cities in this country. While of course it is most appropriate for a few great services throughout the year, there is an enormous waste in connec tion with all the other services. Or to put it in another form, I am much afraid that our Church is being led into a great cost for bricks and mortar and beauty of architecture, all very well, which in time will mean a very heavy fixed charge on the Church for a comparatively inadequate return. Book The American Architect and Building News Vol 4

Download or read book The American Architect and Building News Vol 4 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Architect and Building News, Vol. 4: July December, 1878 The great monuments of Sicily belong to two periods, - to the two periods of Sicilian greatness. There are the works of the Greek commonwealths, and there are the works of the Norman kings. Of Roman remains there must be much below the ground, and there is something above; but they do not form a marked feature, as in Italy and Provence. Byzantine and Saracen rule have indeed left their stamp behind them; but it is a stamp impressed at second-hand. Constantinople and Batrdad are dumb as far as their own voices are concerned, though both speak plainly enough by the tongue of a Norman dragoman. Of the later mediazval styles, the examples are, to our taste, greatly to be preferred to any of. The kind on the Italian mainland; but till quite the end of the period they hold a very second ary place when compared with the masterpieces of French, German, and English art. The days when Corinth sent her eets to colonize Syracuse, and the days when Palermo sent her eets to harry Cor inth, are the two great times whose mighty records in stone still abide on Sicilian ground. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Architect and Building News, Vol. 5: January June, 1879 All art up to the beginning of the sixteenth century was decora tive art, and even up to the present day many of the greatest efforts of art have been truly decorative. But with the growing skill of the artists in mastering the technical difficulties of their craft, the tendency developed of making paintings and sculptures with less and less regard to the relations they were to bear to objects around them and to balanced distribution of color, until now, the commonly accepted idea of a painting or piece of sculpture is an object bearing no relation whatever, either in sentiment, color, or form, to any of its surroundings, and in the case of paintings separated from its sur roundings by the strongest imaginable barrier, - a heavy mass of gilded frame. The artists and the public together have gradually wrought this change, and architecture, sculpture, and painting, instead of work ing hand in hand, as they once did. In the realization of ideas that glorified them, all have come to live separate existences, seriously to the detriment of them all.
