Download or read book America s First Veterans and the Revolutionary War Pensions written by Emily J. Teipe and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In laying the framework for this study, it is important to see just how well the government rewarded its soldiers and also how satisfied veterans were with the results. This book begins with the first pensions adopted by the Federal government, a description of the procedure for disbursing benefits, and an analysis of the overall regard for veterans. The Continental Congress initiated this innovative process which continued until the administration of Andrew Jackson. Each phase reflected much of the thinking about pensions, pensioners, and social perceptions of the Revolutionary War"--Introduction.

This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's First Veterans traces the experiences of Revolutionary War veterans from the dissolution of the Continental Army in 1783 through the deaths of the last Revolutionary War veterans in the 1860s. It considers the changing place of Revolutionary War veterans in the life of the early republic and describes the development of pensions and other benefits for Revolutionary War veterans, their widows and heirs. It includes chapters on the inducements offered to recruit soldiers, the organization of the Society of the Cincinnati (the first veterans' organization in U.S. history), the difficulties faced by veterans in the early years of the republic, the distribution of land warrants and land grants to veterans, early veterans' narratives, the commemoration of the Revolution in the 1820s, and the pension acts of 1818 and 1832, as well as other legislation benefiting Revolutionary War veterans. It concludes with chapters on women veterans and widows of Revolutionary War soldiers and on the last Revolutionary War veterans, including those who lived long enough to be photographed in old age. These themes are illustrated by eighty-five manuscripts, books, prints, broadsides, portraits, and other artifacts from the collections of the Society of the Cincinnati and its constituent societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolutionary War encompassed at least two struggles: one for freedom from British rule, and another, quieter but no less significant fight for the liberty of African Americans, thousands of whom fought in the Continental Army. Because these veterans left few letters or diaries, their story has remained largely untold, and the significance of their service largely unappreciated. Standing in Their Own Light restores these African American patriots to their rightful place in the historical struggle for independence and the end of racial oppression. Revolutionary era African Americans began their lives in a world that hardly questioned slavery; they finished their days in a world that increasingly contested the existence of the institution. Judith L. Van Buskirk traces this shift to the wartime experiences of African Americans. Mining firsthand sources that include black veterans’ pension files, Van Buskirk examines how the struggle for independence moved from the battlefield to the courthouse—and how personal conflicts contributed to the larger struggle against slavery and legal inequality. Black veterans claimed an American identity based on their willing sacrifice on behalf of American independence. And abolitionists, citing the contributions of black soldiers, adopted the tactics and rhetoric of revolution, personal autonomy, and freedom. Van Buskirk deftly places her findings in the changing context of the time. She notes the varied conditions of slavery before the war, the different degrees of racial integration across the Continental Army, and the war’s divergent effects on both northern and southern states. Her efforts retrieve black patriots’ experiences from historical obscurity and reveal their importance in the fight for equal rights—even though it would take another war to end slavery in the United States.

Book With Paper Promises in Their Pockets

Download or read book With Paper Promises in Their Pockets written by Emily Jane Teipe and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is the objective of this study to examine the lives of Revolutionary soldiers in the New Republic by focusing on veterans' efforts to petition the government for military pensions, and by evaluating the pensioning process itself. An analysis of individual veterans post war experiences culled from their pension records and memoirs as well as statistical analysis of veterans as a group indicated the long term economic effects of the war on their lives. In addition these data reveal the degree of success they achieved after the war in terms of their own individual economic and social status. This study has also unearthed not only how the first pensions were established and subsequently amended but what value the government and the community placed on the soldier's service"--Introduction

Book Rejected Or Suspended Applications for Revolutionary War Pensions with an Added Index to States

Download or read book Rejected Or Suspended Applications for Revolutionary War Pensions with an Added Index to States written by United States. Department of the Interior and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1969 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprint of a rare United States Senate Document lists the names and residences of about 11,000 Revolutionary War soldiers and/or their widows who applied for pensions under the Acts of June 7, 1832, and July 7, 1838 and whose claims were rejected or suspended, along with the reasons. Most of the claims were for authentic service of actual Revolutionary soldiers but were rejected or suspended because the soldier did not serve for six months, his name did not appear on the rolls, or because a claim was suspended for further proof, such as proof of marriage. Still other claims were turned down on grounds of desertion, privateer service, or other service in a non-military category. The lists of suspended applications are arranged by states and thereunder by Act of Congress and category of rejection or suspension.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This compilation is an attempt to identify and recreate the Revolutionary War pension files generated prior to the disastrous fire in the War Department on 8 November 1800, which destroyed nearly a quarter-century of records. Despite the best efforts of the War and Treasury Departments to reconstruct the files, a second and even more disastrous fire occurred during the War of 1812 on 24 August 1814 with the British invasion of Washington. The second fire effectively destroyed all the pension files from 1776 to 1814. Despite the tragic loss of nearly four decades of pension records at the national level, it has been possible not only to identify many of those pensioners whose files are commonly believed to have been lost but also to reconstitute in varying degrees their contents. Thus, more than 16,500 pensioners are featured in this work. Among the many sources used to reconstruct these records, two in particular stand out: (1) pension records generated by the governments of each of the original thirteen states (state governments had their own programs and in varying degrees preserved many of their pension files); and (2) acts of Congress that created reports of pensioners receiving pay for service or disability, or widows and orphans receiving benefits, mostly issued as government publications between 1792 and 1840. In addition, the microfilm records of the Continental Congress were searched, as were the standard printed works on the subject such as the Journals of the Continental Congress. Supplementing these traditional sources is the online database Papers of the War Department, 1784-1800, created at George Mason University." -- Introd.

Book Boy Soldiers of the American Revolution

Download or read book Boy Soldiers of the American Revolution written by Caroline Cox and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1819 and 1845, as veterans of the Revolutionary War were filing applications to receive pensions for their service, the government was surprised to learn that many of the soldiers were not men, but boys, many of whom were under the age of sixteen, and some even as young as nine. In Boy Soldiers of the American Revolution, Caroline Cox reconstructs the lives and stories of this young subset of early American soldiers, focusing on how these boys came to join the army and what they actually did in service. Giving us a rich and unique glimpse into colonial childhood, Cox traces the evolution of youth in American culture in the late eighteenth century, as the accepted age for children to participate meaningfully in society--not only in the military--was rising dramatically. Drawing creatively on sources, such as diaries, letters, and memoirs, Caroline Cox offers a vivid account of what life was like for these boys both on and off the battlefield, telling the story of a generation of soldiers caught between old and new notions of boyhood.
