Book excerpt: John Stephens (d.1819) immigrated from England to Echota, Georgia, and married Nakwiski, a Cherokee, in 1814. Their daughter, Stella (1818- 1860), married Ransome Hutton (d.1889), an English immigrant, in 1839 at Park Hill, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Their daughter, Annette (b.1840), married a Confederate officer in Paris, Texas in 1860. Their daughter, Laurel (b.1862), married Del Thornton in 1884 at Paris, Texas. The book tells the history of the Cherokee tribe, particularly in the 19th century, regarding the chiefs, the tribal actions during the Civil War (it supported the Confederacy), and the relations with the government in Washington, D.C. before and after the war. A historical table aligns the dates of importance for the tribe and for the Thornton family tribal ancestry.

Book Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Download or read book Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade written by Robert M. Grippo and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let's have a parade" is the phrase that begins a beloved American tradition, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 1924, employees of the R. H. Macy and Company store in Herald Square, many of whom were immigrants and first-generation Americans, chose to give thanks for their good fortune in a manner reminiscent of the festive parades held in their native countries. The excitement and praise from crowds lining the route that first year led Macy's to issue an immediate proclamation: the parade would become a tradition. Before the parade's first decade passed, Macy's welcomed the huge and spectacular helium character balloons that became its goodwill ambassadors. Since then, the parade has become a world-famous treasure. Through rare and historic images, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade offers readers a chance to reminisce, explore, and delight in eighty years of this thoroughly American celebration.

This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major economic industry among American Indian tribes is the public promotion and display of aspects of their cultural heritage in a range of tourist venues. Few do it better than the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, whose homeland is the Qualla Boundary of North Carolina. This book presents the two faces of the Cherokee people. One is the public face that populates the powwows, dramatic presentations, museums, and myriad roadside craft locations. The other is the private face whose homecoming, Indian fairs, traditions, belief system, community strength, and cultural heritage are threatened by the very activities that put food on their tables.

Book America s First Network TV Censor

Download or read book America s First Network TV Censor written by Robert Pondillo and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2010-04-23 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s First Network TV Censor: The Work of NBC’s Stockton Helffrichis a unique examination of early television censorship, centered around the papers of Stockton Helffrich, the first manager of the censorship department at NBC. Set against the backdrop of postwar America and contextualized by myriad primary sources including original interviews and unpublished material, Helffrich’s reports illustrate how early censorship of advertising, language, and depictions of sex, violence, and race shaped the new medium. While other books have cited Helffrich’s reports, none have considered them as a body of work, complemented by the details of Helffrich’s life and the era in which he lived. America’s First Network TV Censor explores the ways in which Helffrich’s personal history and social class influenced his perception of his role as NBC-TV censor and his tendency to ignore certain political and cultural taboos while embracing others. Author Robert Pondillo considers Helffrich’s life in broadcasting before and after the Second World War, and his censorial work in the context of 1950s American culture and emerging network television. Pondillo discusses the ways that cultural phenomena, including the arrival of the mid-twentieth-century religious boom, McCarthyism, the dawn of the Civil Rights era, and the social upheaval over sex, music, and youth, contributed to a general sense that the country was morally adrift and ripe for communist takeover. Five often-censored subjects—advertising, language, and depictions of sex, violence, and race—are explored in detail, exposing the surprising complexity and nuance of early media censorship. Questions of whether too many sadistic westerns would coarsen America’s children, how to talk about homosexuality without using the word “homosexuality,” and how best to advertise toilet paper without offending people were on Helffrich’s mind; his answers to these questions helped shape the broadcast media we know today.
