Book Workforce Education

Download or read book Workforce Education written by William B. Bonvillian and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A roadmap for how we can rebuild America's working class by transforming workforce education and training. The American dream promised that if you worked hard, you could move up, with well-paying working-class jobs providing a gateway to an ever-growing middle class. Today, however, we have increasing inequality, not economic convergence. Technological advances are putting quality jobs out of reach for workers who lack the proper skills and training. In Workforce Education, William Bonvillian and Sanjay Sarma offer a roadmap for rebuilding America's working class. They argue that we need to train more workers more quickly, and they describe innovative methods of workforce education that are being developed across the country.

Book Building America s Skilled Technical Workforce

Download or read book Building America s Skilled Technical Workforce written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-06-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skilled technical occupationsâ€"defined as occupations that require a high level of knowledge in a technical domain but do not require a bachelor's degree for entryâ€"are a key component of the U.S. economy. In response to globalization and advances in science and technology, American firms are demanding workers with greater proficiency in literacy and numeracy, as well as strong interpersonal, technical, and problem-solving skills. However, employer surveys and industry and government reports have raised concerns that the nation may not have an adequate supply of skilled technical workers to achieve its competitiveness and economic growth objectives. In response to the broader need for policy information and advice, Building America's Skilled Technical Workforce examines the coverage, effectiveness, flexibility, and coordination of the policies and various programs that prepare Americans for skilled technical jobs. This report provides action-oriented recommendations for improving the American system of technical education, training, and certification.

Book Educating the Small Business Work Force

Download or read book Educating the Small Business Work Force written by United States. Congress. House. Committee on Small Business. Subcommittee on Development of Rural Enterprises, Exports, and the Environment and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document records the oral testimony and written reports of witnesses who testified at a Congressional hearing on education for entry-level workers who are needed by small businesses. Those who offered oral or written testimony included representatives of the following: National Alliance of Business, the American Society for Training and Development, the Educational Testing Service, the Council on Competitiveness, and the Executive Secretarial School. The testimony centered on the theme that noncollege-bound students, who represent about 75 percent of students, do not have the basic skills needed to fill the jobs available and to advance in those jobs. Witnesses suggested that many kinds of reform have been tried with little success. They pointed to Goals 2000, however, as the type of movement that is needed and that might provide the goals necessary for collective work toward a more competitive work force. Some witnesses believe that educational reform cannot be just "tinkering around the edges," but must be a complete overhaul of the school system. Others suggested a "youth apprenticeship" program for the last 2 years of high school, with employers playing a greater role in training students for the jobs available. According to one witness, schools and employers need to agree on validated skills necessary for high school graduates so noncollege-bound students have some incentive to study. In addition, education should stress more applications, according to several witnesses. Some witnesses also stated that small businesses cannot afford training for their employees and that the federal government should provide tax incentives for training personnel, just as they do for technology and equipment purchases. Book Managing Workforce Development in the 21st Century Global Reflections and Forward Thinking in the New Millennium

Download or read book Managing Workforce Development in the 21st Century Global Reflections and Forward Thinking in the New Millennium written by Henry O'Lawrence and published by Informing Science. This book was released on 2016 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with the premise that workforce education is a global issue and is becoming increasingly competitive. It is important for the reader to understand the concept of work historically, as well as its meaning and implications to individuals. Understanding this history leads to better instruction, education, and training, which can solve many human performance problems in the workplace. Workforce Education, Occupational, Training, Instruction or Career Education, Voca-tional Education or Technical Education is used interchangeably throughout this book. The concept of today’s workforce development is universal. As a college professor, I believe I have an ethical obligation to promote learning, to ensure health and safety, to protect the public and private trust, and to promote the transfer of learning. A second premise of this book is that there are common issues and problems in the workplace. This book provides, in a single volume, the knowledge base common to all work settings for today’s students, regardless of their specialty. Thus, the book was designed for students to think globally and to understand how to be and what it takes to be competitive in the global economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keep the workers you want - in good times and bad. How do organizations keep the workers they want? Until now, employee retention strategies have been based on instincts rather than research. With no firm body of knowledge to use as a guide, employee turnover has been a problem for all organizations. Rethinking Retention in Good Times and Bad is the first book to offer a top-to-bottom, organization-wide retention action plan. Many organizations lose employees and profits because they don't know which processes to put into place to cut employee turnover. They speak of building retention cultures but don't know who should do what and when. This hands-on tactical guide gives those answers, providing specific strategies and tactics backed by the author's own research and on-site experience. Rethinking Retention in Good Times and Bad is essential reading for all types of organizations-large or small, public or private, with high concentrations of low-skilled or high-skilled workers and across multiple industries. If you are losing workers you want to keep - in good economic times and bad - this book will tell you how to put retention solutions in place across your company.

Book Historical Critique of Career and Technical Education in California

Download or read book Historical Critique of Career and Technical Education in California written by Henry O'Lawrence and published by Informing Science. This book was released on 2013 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with an overview of the evolution of career and technical education in California over the 20th century and some insight as to its strengths and weaknesses as well as the challenges it faces in the new millennium. This book delves into why career and technical education/vocational education are so important and needed in California’s public schools. Among the things it looks at are “What is vocational education?” “What are the benefits of vocational education, and in particular, to the student?” and “Why does California need vocational education?” Section one of this book discusses the historical foundation of career and technical education in California starting from the beginning of 1900 to 2000. Section two contains research on the 21st century workforce and the community college’s CTE programs and role in the economy. This book provides a forum and voice for scholars in California. It allows us to learn and understand how career and technical education was viewed at the beginning of its foundation, its curriculum, and its impact on the California labor force today. It also looks at the labor market disadvantages we are facing due to lack of proper structures in the CTE programs across the State.
