Why is rock generally assumed to be created and performed by men? Marion Leonard explores different representations of masculinity offered by, and performed through, rock music, and examines how female rock performers negotiate this gendering of rock as masculine. A major concern of the book is not specifically with men or with women performing rock, but with how notions of gender affect the everyday experiences of all rock musicians within the context of the music industry. Leonard addresses core issues relating to gender, rock and the music industry through a case study of 'female-centred' bands from the UK and US performing so called 'indie rock' from the 1990s to the present day. Using original interview material with both amateur and internationally renowned musicians, the book further addresses the fact that the voices of musicians have often been absent from music industry studies. Leonard's central aim is to progress from feminist scholarship that has documented and explored the experience of female musicians, to presenting an analytic discussion of gender and the music industry. Fortunately, most of them have stayed with me year after year remaining fresh in my memory, alive in my heart. I compiled my first “Favorites List” in 1983, and it contained about 600 recordings. Most of the records on the original list are still there today. My current list consists of about 900 recordings. And the list is still growing as I continue to be introduced to more music. You may be familiar with Rolling Stone’s 2004 cover story, “The 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time.” This is certainly a comprehensive compendium on the subject, so why should I bother writing this book? Because I’m taking a different approach, a personal approach. There’s a difference between the “greatest songs” as determined by professional music critics, and someone’s “favorite records.” I’m not a music critic or a musicologist. I’m just a guy who loves good music. Nonetheless, I believe my opinions have value because of the strong connection I have with each record. The primary purpose of this book is to draw us together using our favorite music as the catalyst. In the process of getting to know someone, a commonly asked question is: “What kind of music do you like?” His or her answer usually reveals something about their personality. Not only will you learn what my favorite records are, you will learn about me, why I like these songs and how I came to discover them. I’m hoping to create conversations, not only between you and I, but between all American music lovers. Thousands upon thousands of songs have been recorded over the past 60 years. I’ve been an avid listener for most of my life, but there are still a lot of “hidden treasures” out there I’d love to find. I’m hoping you, by sharing your favorites with me, will help me to find them. I’m also hoping that I will inspire you to listen to some of my favorites. There is a treasure trove of great music out waiting to be enjoyed!

Book excerpt: Whether it was the demands of life, leisure, or a combination of both that forced our hands, we have developed a myriad of artefacts—-maps, notes, descriptions, diagrams, flow-charts, photographs, paintings, and prints—-that stand for other things. Most agree that images and their close relatives are special because, in some sense, they look like what they are about. This simple claim is the starting point for most philosophical investigations into the nature of depiction. On Images argues that this starting point is fundamentally misguided. Whether a representation is an image depends not on how it is perceived but on how it relates to others within a system. This kind of approach, first championed by Nelson Goodman in his Languages of Art, has not found many supporters, in part because of weaknesses with Goodman's account. On Images shows that a properly crafted structural account of pictures has many advantages over the perceptual accounts that dominate the literature on this topic. In particular, it explains the close relationship between pictures, diagrams, graphs and other kinds of non-linguistic representation. It undermines the claim that pictures are essentially visual by showing that audio recordings, tactile line drawings, and other non-visual representations are pictorial. Also, by avoiding explaining images in terms of how we perceive them, this account sheds new light on why pictures seem so perceptually special in the first place. This discussion of picture perception recasts some old debates on the topic, suggests further lines of philosophical and empirical research, and ultimately leads to a new perspective on pictorial realism.
