Book Out to Win

Download or read book Out to Win written by Coningsby Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out to Win: The Story of America in France I am not writing this preface for the conscious fool, but for his self-deceived brother who considers himself a very wise person. My hope is that some persons may recognise themselves and be provided with food for thought. They will usually be people who have contributed little to this war, except mean views and endless talk. Had they shared the sacrifice of it, they would have developed within themselves the faculty for a wider generosity. The extraordinary thing about generosity is its eagerness to recognise itself in others. You find these untravelled critics and mischief-makers on both sides of the Atlantic. In most cases they have no definite desire to work harm, but they have inherited cantankerous prejudices which date back to the American Revolution, and they lack the vision to perceive that this war, despite its horror and tragedy, is the God-given chance of centuries to re-unite the great Anglo-Saxon races of the world in a truer bond of kindness and kinship. Book Young France and New America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Young France and New America Classic Reprint written by Pierre De Lanux and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young France and New America These are the reflections of a Frenchman who spent the year 1917 in America. They deal with the present events and those from the near past, but their expression is first inspired by the thought of the near future, that is to say, the period that will begin when this war ends. My purpose was to define and to sum up the possibilities which F ranco-american relations will offer tomorrow, as well on intellectual as on concrete grounds. This subject would be much too wide for one man and for one book, but we shall concentrate on the results of cc-operation between elements of the younger generation of both countries. The present book is written for the young men and women of America who are interested in the present life of France. Book America in France Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America in France Upon our entry into the war, I became one of the band of reserve officers who might do special service while they envied the men of the training camps their youth. My duties allowed me a wide range of information and observation with our expedition ary force in France from its inception. Under the spell of our marvelous achievement, which is the greatest story any American has ever had to tell, I have written about it as I knew it through its phases of building, training, fighting and of unremitting effort until we had won the Saint Mihiel salient and broken the old German line in the Argonne battle. Readers of My Year of the Great War and My Second Year of the War will have between two covers, if they choose, my third and fourth years. Book The Huguenots in France and America

Download or read book The Huguenots in France and America written by Hannah Farnham Sawyer Lee and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1973 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doubtless one of the scarcest Huguenot studies and yet unquestionably a classic, Lee's "Huguenots in France and America" is essentially a history rather than a treatise on emigration or a list of names, with primary emphasis on the exposition of facts and notable events. It is an exhaustive account of the origins of the Huguenots in France, their persecution and their subsequent flight, embracing sketches of many leading contemporaries and an account of the Reformation of the church in Europe and kindred circumstances resulting in the rise of French Protestantism. Particularly close attention is given to the major events leading to the Huguenot dispersion to England, Holland, Germany, and America; namely, the St. Bartholomew Massacre (1572), the assassination of King Henry IV (1610), and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). An important section of nearly 100 pages is devoted to the Huguenots of America, with emphasis on the formidable Huguenot settlements at Oxford (Mass.), New Rochelle (N.Y.), New Paltz (N.Y.), Frenchtown (R.I.), and Jamestown (S.C.). The work further contains a "List of the Names of Huguenot Families in America," documenting the arrival in Boston of those families who later settled in Maine, New York, and Rhode Island; and the names of those who settled in the South, including the settlement on the Santee River in South Carolina.

This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenots in France and America, Vol. 1 of 2 The Memoir of the family of La Fontaine, pub lished in New York, and translated by one of the descendants, finds no corresponding memoir in this country. Yet there are enough records left to prove, that a similar noble spirit animated the Huguenots in America. From this most interesting manuscript, I have been permitted to extract the following pas sage not inserted in the printed edition. I give part of it in the old French, that the arduous work of the translator may be appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Fight With France for North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fight With France for North America Classic Reprint written by A. G. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fight With France for North America The subject of this volume will, for the most part, I have reason to think, possess at least the merit of novelty for the general reader. The oblivion to which in this country the American War of Independence has been consigned is at least comprehensible. It had few dramatic features, and for us was not glorious, either in motive or conduct. But the earlier war with the French power in America was not only rich in picturesque detail and dramatic situation, but formed an important part of the most glorious and most epoch-making struggle in which Great Britain was ever engaged. Yet no English writer, using the term in its narrow sense, has seriously touched the subject since Warburton, early in the century, published his two admirable volumes on the Conquest of Canada. The well-known Canadian historian, the late Mr. Kingsford, has devoted a great part of volumes III. and IV. in his exhaustive history of the Dominion to the period in question. But it is idle to speak of what may be called in general terms books of reference (however interesting to the student), when the fascinating pages of the brilliant American, Francis Parkman, are only known to so comparatively small a circle of English readers. My own love for France was deepened last year when, by invitation of the Young Men's Christian Association, I was privileged to visit France and Italy and England. Coming into the French republic, I saw as I had never seen be fore the reason for the name that at taches to it in our common thinking Beautiful France; and I came to recog nize that there must be given to it an other name in this day, and in the days to come - Sad France, for one sees con stantly the evidences of sorrow, and is impressed that as France has been the center of the world's passion, it is now the center of the world's sacrifice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from France in the American Revolution Article II of the treaty provided that the essen tial and direct end of the present defensive alliance is to maintain effectually the liberty, sovereignty and in dependence absolute and unlimited of the said United States. By other articles France pledged herself not to lay down her arms until this independence had been achieved, and, whatever be the delay, cost, or losses, to neither claim nor accept anything for the help thus' provided. She even specifically consented that the harshest of the conditions of the 1763 treaty of peace with England be maintained: if conquests were made in the northern part of America, the conquered land would be annexed to the United States, and not to the country which had settled Canada and possessed it until that peace. Download or read book The American in Paris Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by John Sanderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American in Paris, Vol. 1 of 2 You have no sooner a guinea in London than you have none. In addition to the ways and means I pointed out in my last, gather together the letters I wrote you from Paris, and offer them to the booksellers. There are enough, if you have preserved them, for a volume. Those from London reserve until time has made the necessary additions for volume the second. I had partly the intention, in writing these letters, to dress them up one day into some kind of shape for the Public. I am not certain they are fit to be seen in their present dishabille - but leave that to the purchaser. A pretty woman slip-shod is a pretty woman still, and she is not so much improved as you think by her court dress. Tell the Public I do not mean them for great things: I am no critic, no politician, no political economist; but only, as Shakspeare would say, "a snapper up of inconsiderate trifles." - Under this title I have the honor to be, with the most perfect consideration, the Public's very obedient, humble servant.
