Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America for Coming Citizens This book is the outgrowth of the author's belief that the Coming Citizen in our country eagerly seeks to understand the great American institu tions; that he shows a laudable curiosity on the many topics which older Americans frequently take for granted, and that it is unfair to place the burden for failure to understand America entirely on the immigrant. Within the limits of a single volume some of the most pressing questions confronting the coming citizen are answered. What is this America of which you speak? How came it to be? How are you different from us who are not yet citizens? What do I owe to your past? What must I do to participate in the present and to make glorious your future? What ought I to know as an American? What must I do to take my place as an American? The author has not hesitated to quote freely the words of such Amer icans as Franklin K. Lane, Henry van Dyke, Elihu Root, Louis D. Brandeis, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Book in English for Coming Citizens Americanization has been defined as the "union of new with native-born Americans in fuller common understanding and appreciation to secure by means of individual and collective self-direction the highest welfare of all." This conception of the process of Americanization requires as a minimum that the native American engaged in the process be informed as to the immigrant's motives in coming to America, his attitudes toward his adopted land, his understanding of American institutions. Educators are agreed to-day that Americanization is a dual and reciprocal process, requiring the active participation of the foreign as well as of the native born. Ultimately, the immigrant must find himself in an American environment, must attach himself to American institutions, must contribute his gifts to their support and to their further development. As a means toward establishing such Americanizing contacts, the immigrant must at least be able to communicate with his English-speaking neighbor in the language of America, and to appreciate in an elementary way the things which Americans hold dear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New American Citizen a Reader for Foreigners To introduce, also, as soon as practicable, vocabularies variant to some extent from the words commonly used in daily experience is believed to be of advantage; for thereby the feeling of growth and mastery of language is developed. Such feeling will incite to the independent reading of books. The difficulty, heretofore, has been to find an emotional basis, universal in its appeal and sufficiently strong to command the interest of adult pupils of all ages and nationalities. The appeal of patriot ism furnishes the true emotional basis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civics for Coming Americans The purpose oi this booklet is to put within reach of the foreign-born having a fair command of the English language such information as is required to pass the examination for naturalization. Many patriots, sympathizing with Coming Americans, would willingly give them a helping hand if they knew how to do so intelligently. They neither know what the applicant for naturalization needs nor are they familiar with the laws regulating the process. My effort is to give these men a guide, should they be disposed to help a group of aliens preparing for the examination in naturalization. Book English for Coming Citizens Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English for Coming Citizens The World War has brought home to us, now as never before, the need for effectively Americanizing the millions of non-English residents of the United States. The first and perhaps the most important step in this process is the acquisition of English, the tongue in which America thinks and expresses itself; for although the bonds of language are thinner than air, they are more binding than strongest links of iron. The foreigner in this country has, relatively, a greater need for knowing how to speak English than he has for knowing how to read, and he has a far greater need for knowing how to read than he has for knowing how to write. -Moreover, language teachers are agreed that speaking is the psychological basis for reading and writing, and not that reading and writing are the psychological bases for speaking. On this principle the content of the book has been largely selected and organized. The lessons have been written with the purpose of being usable at once by the learner in expressing his needs in English to English-speaking people. In learning a language nothing is more encouraging than to be able to make oneself understood, even though it be only in one sentence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Citizenship IN view of the large number of textbooks on civics already available, some very decided reasons should be forthcoming from those who venture to add another one to the long list. It is constantly changing and growing, like a live thing. It has a beginning in the family and home; it touches every neighborly relation; it is con cerned with the uses, the getting, spending, saving, and holding of money, and the rightful distribution of property. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What America Means to Me: A Book of the People, by the People, for the People; Designed for Their Use in Preparing Themselves for the Practice of Citizenship IS it not a venturesome experiment for a nation to admit to the difficult privilege Of being a citizen in a democracy such a multitude of recruits with no Special training for their task? Is it not an astonishing fact that for generations we have fought so strenuously for the franchise, but have done SO little to prepare ourselves for its exercise? It sometimes requires a surgical operation to awaken a nation to a realization of its Obvious needs. Such an Operation was performed for us by the recent World War. It helped us realize what it means to our national welfare, that among candidates for citizenship there is so large a number Of resident and unprepared aliens, that the military draft revealed an appalling number of illiterates among the native-born, that less than half the citizens of America have had even a grammar school education. Book The Education of the American Citizen Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Education of the American Citizen Classic Reprint written by Arthur Twining Hadley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the American Citizen In many of the political writings of the day, there is a tendency to lay too much stress on the mechanism of government and of industry, and too little stress on the force by which this mechanism is kept at work. In recent educational movements, also, too much thought is perhaps given to the problem of preparing men and women to take their several places in a social machine, and too little to the development of that power and spirit upon which the perpetuation of our whole social order depends. From my public addresses and magazine articles of the past few years, I have tried to select those which emphasize the more neglected side of these questions, and to arrange them in a continuous series. In a book thus prepared, it is inevitable that there should be some repetition and some apparent inconsistencies. If the reader is perplexed by any of these things, he will perhaps find the explanation in the date of the different utterances and the special conditions under which they were made public. No sharp line can be drawn between those papers which are political and those which are educational. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
