Book American Fascists

Download or read book American Fascists written by Chris Hedges and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-01-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other radio and televangelists first spoke of the United States becoming a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedom and our way of life. In American Fascists, Chris Hedges, veteran journalist and author of the National Book Award finalist War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, challenges the Christian Right's religious legitimacy and argues that at its core it is a mass movement fueled by unbridled nationalism and a hatred for the open society. Hedges, who grew up in rural parishes in upstate New York where his father was a Presbyterian pastor, attacks the movement as someone steeped in the Bible and Christian tradition. He points to the hundreds of senators and members of Congress who have earned between 80 and 100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian Right advocacy groups as one of many signs that the movement is burrowing deep inside the American government to subvert it. The movement's call to dismantle the wall between church and state and the intolerance it preaches against all who do not conform to its warped vision of a Christian America are pumped into tens of millions of American homes through Christian television and radio stations, as well as reinforced through the curriculum in Christian schools. The movement's yearning for apocalyptic violence and its assault on dispassionate, intellectual inquiry are laying the foundation for a new, frightening America. American Fascists, which includes interviews and coverage of events such as pro-life rallies and weeklong classes on conversion techniques, examines the movement's origins, its driving motivations and its dark ideological underpinnings. Hedges argues that the movement currently resembles the young fascist movements in Italy and Germany in the 1920s and '30s, movements that often masked the full extent of their drive for totalitarianism and were willing to make concessions until they achieved unrivaled power. The Christian Right, like these early fascist movements, does not openly call for dictatorship, nor does it use physical violence to suppress opposition. In short, the movement is not yet revolutionary. But the ideological architecture of a Christian fascism is being cemented in place. The movement has roused its followers to a fever pitch of despair and fury. All it will take, Hedges writes, is one more national crisis on the order of September 11 for the Christian Right to make a concerted drive to destroy American democracy. The movement awaits a crisis. At that moment they will reveal themselves for what they truly are -- the American heirs to fascism. Hedges issues a potent, impassioned warning. We face an imminent threat. His book reminds us of the dangers liberal, democratic societies face when they tolerate the intolerant.

Book America Fascism and God

Download or read book America Fascism and God written by Davidson Loehr and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion and politics have always been a potent mix. History is littered with times when that combination caused sweeping death and destruction, when it fueled aggression and oppression—and when it gave fascism a religious and diplomatic face. Reverend Davidson Loehr is afraid that we may be living in such a time in America today. On the Sunday following the election on November 2, 2004, Loehr, a liberal minister in Texas, delivered a sermon titled “Living Under Fascism”—a sermon that spread like wildfire through the Internet. “I mean to persuade you that the style of governing into which America has slid is most accurately described as fascism, and that the necessary implications of this fact are rightly regarded as terrifying,” the preacher told his congregation. “. . . and even if I don’t persuade you, I hope to raise the level of your thinking about who and where we are now.” In this series of incisive and inspired sermons, Loehr takes aim at the unholy alliance of corporate money, political power, and religious fundamentalism that is threatening both our political and our economic democracy. But Loehr’s words provide little comfort to liberals and progressives who have stubbornly clung to a radical individualism and an amoral secularism. America, Fascism, and Godis a call—first to understand that religion has been hijacked and debased. And then to take it back.

Book Liberal Fascism

Download or read book Liberal Fascism written by Jonah Goldberg and published by Crown Forum. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Fascists,” “Brownshirts,” “jackbooted stormtroopers”—such are the insults typically hurled at conservatives by their liberal opponents. Calling someone a fascist is the fastest way to shut them up, defining their views as beyond the political pale. But who are the real fascists in our midst? Liberal Fascism offers a startling new perspective on the theories and practices that define fascist politics. Replacing conveniently manufactured myths with surprising and enlightening research, Jonah Goldberg reminds us that the original fascists were really on the left, and that liberals from Woodrow Wilson to FDR to Hillary Clinton have advocated policies and principles remarkably similar to those of Hitler's National Socialism and Mussolini's Fascism. Contrary to what most people think, the Nazis were ardent socialists (hence the term “National socialism”). They believed in free health care and guaranteed jobs. They confiscated inherited wealth and spent vast sums on public education. They purged the church from public policy, promoted a new form of pagan spirituality, and inserted the authority of the state into every nook and cranny of daily life. The Nazis declared war on smoking, supported abortion, euthanasia, and gun control. They loathed the free market, provided generous pensions for the elderly, and maintained a strict racial quota system in their universities—where campus speech codes were all the rage. The Nazis led the world in organic farming and alternative medicine. Hitler was a strict vegetarian, and Himmler was an animal rights activist. Do these striking parallels mean that today’s liberals are genocidal maniacs, intent on conquering the world and imposing a new racial order? Not at all. Yet it is hard to deny that modern progressivism and classical fascism shared the same intellectual roots. We often forget, for example, that Mussolini and Hitler had many admirers in the United States. W.E.B. Du Bois was inspired by Hitler's Germany, and Irving Berlin praised Mussolini in song. Many fascist tenets were espoused by American progressives like John Dewey and Woodrow Wilson, and FDR incorporated fascist policies in the New Deal. Fascism was an international movement that appeared in different forms in different countries, depending on the vagaries of national culture and temperament. In Germany, fascism appeared as genocidal racist nationalism. In America, it took a “friendlier,” more liberal form. The modern heirs of this “friendly fascist” tradition include the New York Times, the Democratic Party, the Ivy League professoriate, and the liberals of Hollywood. The quintessential Liberal Fascist isn't an SS storm trooper; it is a female grade school teacher with an education degree from Brown or Swarthmore. These assertions may sound strange to modern ears, but that is because we have forgotten what fascism is. In this angry, funny, smart, contentious book, Jonah Goldberg turns our preconceptions inside out and shows us the true meaning of Liberal Fascism.

Book excerpt: Was America founded on Judeo-Christian principles? Are the Ten Commandments the basis for American law? In the paperback edition of this critically acclaimed book, a constitutional attorney settles the debate about religion's role in America's founding. In today's contentious political climate, understanding religion's role in American government is more important than ever. Christian nationalists assert that our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and advocate an agenda based on this popular historical claim. But is this belief true? The Founding Myth answers the question once and for all. Andrew L. Seidel builds his case by comparing the Ten Commandments to the Constitution and contrasting biblical doctrine with America's founding philosophy, showing that the Declaration of Independence contradicts the Bible. Thoroughly researched, this persuasively argued and fascinating book proves that America was not built on the Bible and that Christian nationalism is un-American. Includes a new epilogue reflecting on the role Christian nationalism played in fomenting the January 6, 2021, insurrection in DC and the warnings the nation missed.

Book excerpt: America's armed forces were the products of one of the most diverse and dynamic religious cultures in the western world and were the largest ever to be raised by a professedly religious society. Despite constitutional constraints, a pre-war 'religious depression', and the myriad pitfalls of war, religion played a crucial role in helping more than sixteen million uniformed Americans through the ordeal of World War II, a fact that had profound and far-reaching implications for the religious development of post-war America.--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: The chant of "Azadi!"—Urdu for "Freedom!"—is the slogan of the freedom struggle in Kashmir against what Kashmiris see as the Indian Occupation. Ironically, it also became the chant of millions on the streets of India against the project of Hindu Nationalism. Even as Arundhati Roy began to ask what lay between these two calls for Freedom—a chasm or a bridge?—the streets fell silent. Not only in India, but all over the world. The coronavirus brought with it another, more terrible understanding of Azadi, making a nonsense of international borders, incarcerating whole populations, and bringing the modern world to a halt like nothing else ever could. In this series of electrifying essays, Arundhati Roy challenges us to reflect on the meaning of freedom in a world of growing authoritarianism. The essays include meditations on language, public as well as private, and on the role of fiction and alternative imaginations in these disturbing times. The pandemic, she says, is a portal between one world and another. For all the illness and devastation it has left in its wake, it is an invitation to the human race, an opportunity, to imagine another world.

Download or read book God s Democracy written by Emilio Gentile and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In God's Democracy, Emilio Gentile argues that the presidency of George W. Bush sought to alter the way religion functions in American political life. Prior to the events of 9/11, the national government operated under a civil religious regime that placed a sacred umbrella over the entire country and its leading political figures. American civil religion was not only an inclusive faith, but one that provided ample room for citizens with different politics and different world views. But in the wake of 9/11, President Bush used religion to differentiate Americans on partisan lines. Relying heavily on his evangelical Christian base, he attempted to substitute for the inclusivism of the traditional American civil religion an exclusivist political religion in which Democrats were portrayed as hostile to religious values and incapable of dealing with the country's foreign enemies. This book provides the historical context for this attempted transformation, and shows in a detailed way how the Bush administration pursued it. Gentile concludes by posing the question of whether this radical shift in the way Americans understand themselves religiously will prove permanent. Unlike other works that strive to show how religion has generally come to be treated in American politics, this new book looks more squarely at the Bush Administration and its attempt to shut out Democrats from the political process by invoking religious language and ideals. He goes on to consider the political exclusivism and whether or not it will persist beyond Bush's tenure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Republican, if all the lies Fox News tells you about liberals were actually true, I'd hate liberals too. Who wouldn't? But that's the thing: virtually nothing you are being told about liberals is actually true. It's propaganda, designed to demonize liberals. Most liberals honestly have no idea why you Trump voters hate liberals so much. This is why: You're being lied to, to make you hate liberals. Be honest: you can barely tolerate me even using the word liberal so many times in a few sentences, because to you it's such a toxic word. Liberals repulse you. They are barely even human, and definitely un-American, right? You think liberals are everything that is wrong with America. Liberals are wrong, bad and evil. Evil demons. America would be a much better place without liberals, right? That extremely negative emotional response in your head was created by malicious propaganda lies you have been fed about liberals. Here's a short list of true facts Fox News doesn't want you to know. And it's just the tip of the iceberg. Hitler and the Nazis were not liberals, not lefties, not socialists, and not democrats. Hitler and his Nazi minions were right-wing Christian conservative nationalists who hated liberals for the same reasons you hate liberals. I know what you're thinking: "That's fucking crazy talk! That can't possibly be true! This guy is a deranged libtard!" Well, I have news for you: it's absolutely 100% true. And I can easily prove it to you in this short book, if you give me 5 minutes. MAGA is a death cult. They hate liberals with the same intensity, and for the same absurd reasons, as the Nazis hated the Jews. Nazis thought they were righteous and good, and that they were eradicating evil. MAGA believes the same thing about themselves and liberals. They don't want to co-exist.

Book The Collapse of Truth

Download or read book The Collapse of Truth written by John Casperson and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is amid a defining moment that will irrevocably determine the future of the American democratic experiment. In 1787, when the constitution of the United States was adopted, Americans gathered on the steps of Independence Hall in Philadelphia and asked Benjamin Franklin what type of government had been fashioned by the Founding Fathers. Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.” The American political system has held a firm grasp on the concept of representational government until now. In Jonathan Swift’s brilliant political satire, Gulliver’s Travels, rope by rope, Gulliver was imprisoned albeit imperceptibly. Now, judge by judge, the judicial system has been co-opted by the right wing, and the Department of Justice is occupied by a king maker. Elections are corrupted beyond measure both by domestic political machinations and foreign influence meddling. The American free press is under attack like never before. This book is an analysis and expose of forces at work that overtly and covertly are propelling America toward an authoritarian fascist state.

Book Nature s God The Heretical Origins of the American Republic

Download or read book Nature s God The Heretical Origins of the American Republic written by Matthew Stewart and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the National Book Award. Where did the ideas come from that became the cornerstone of American democracy? America’s founders intended to liberate us not just from one king but from the ghostly tyranny of supernatural religion. Drawing deeply on the study of European philosophy, Matthew Stewart brilliantly tracks the ancient, pagan, and continental ideas from which America’s revolutionaries drew their inspiration. In the writings of Spinoza, Lucretius, and other great philosophers, Stewart recovers the true meanings of “Nature’s God,” “the pursuit of happiness,” and the radical political theory with which the American experiment in self-government began.

Download or read book Is God on America s Side written by Michael John Sutton and published by Hidden Road Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is God on America's side? Does God bless America? Do nations have a divine destiny? Is America exceptional? Is America a Christian nation? What does the Bible really say about nations, free speech, and citizenship? Should we fear nations? If God is on America's side, then we must fear America because if we do not, we will be fighting against God. But if God is not on America's side, we are free to do as we choose. This book is about America, it is about fear, and the fear of political power, which is one of the most powerful fears in our world today. It is also about identity and loyalty and where we find true freedom. Dr. Michael J. Sutton, the CEO, and Founder of Freedom Matters Today investigates 'Christian Nationalism' from a Christian perspective and presents a unique, radical reinterpretation of this increasingly popular political movement. He argues that Christian Nationalism should be called out for what it is, a type of Christian Fascism. People who mix faith and flag in any form, are fascists. Christian Nationalism is just an offshoot of a much older, established religion that replaces Christ with the church, faith with religion, and the Spirit with political power. Fascists seek to control the state, but Christians follow Jesus. Dr. Sutton writes: 'How you feel about your nation is entirely up to you. You can love it, or you can loathe it, you can be devoted to it, or dismissive of it, you can support it, or you can spurn it. You are free to do what you like in this respect. I do not judge America, nor could I ever, only God can judge anyone or anything. But I will say this, and I hope you are reading very carefully so you will not misunderstand me: faith and flag are not the same, they never have been and never will be. Those who confuse faith and flag are either those who simply do not know the God whom they claim to follow, or they are fake followers of God. It is as simple as that...for it is impossible to read the Bible and reach the conclusion that God is on anyone's side.

Book How Fascism Works

Download or read book How Fascism Works written by Jason Stanley and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “No single book is as relevant to the present moment.”—Claudia Rankine, author of Citizen “One of the defining books of the decade.”—Elizabeth Hinton, author of From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS’ CHOICE • With a new preface • Fascist politics are running rampant in America today—and spreading around the world. A Yale philosopher identifies the ten pillars of fascist politics, and charts their horrifying rise and deep history. As the child of refugees of World War II Europe and a renowned philosopher and scholar of propaganda, Jason Stanley has a deep understanding of how democratic societies can be vulnerable to fascism: Nations don’t have to be fascist to suffer from fascist politics. In fact, fascism’s roots have been present in the United States for more than a century. Alarmed by the pervasive rise of fascist tactics both at home and around the globe, Stanley focuses here on the structures that unite them, laying out and analyzing the ten pillars of fascist politics—the language and beliefs that separate people into an “us” and a “them.” He knits together reflections on history, philosophy, sociology, and critical race theory with stories from contemporary Hungary, Poland, India, Myanmar, and the United States, among other nations. He makes clear the immense danger of underestimating the cumulative power of these tactics, which include exploiting a mythic version of a nation’s past; propaganda that twists the language of democratic ideals against themselves; anti-intellectualism directed against universities and experts; law and order politics predicated on the assumption that members of minority groups are criminals; and fierce attacks on labor groups and welfare. These mechanisms all build on one another, creating and reinforcing divisions and shaping a society vulnerable to the appeals of authoritarian leadership. By uncovering disturbing patterns that are as prevalent today as ever, Stanley reveals that the stuff of politics—charged by rhetoric and myth—can quickly become policy and reality. Only by recognizing fascists politics, he argues, may we resist its most harmful effects and return to democratic ideals. “With unsettling insight and disturbing clarity, How Fascism Works is an essential guidebook to our current national dilemma of democracy vs. authoritarianism.”—William Jelani Cobb, author of The Substance of Hope

Download or read book The 15 Solution written by Jonathan Westminster and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, Patrick Buchanan said: "We're on the verge of taking [the Republican Party] back as prelude to taking back our country as prelude to taking back the destiny of America, and when we get there, my friends, we will be obedient to one sovereign America and that is the sovereign of God himself" (The Nation, D. Corn, 3/11/96). By 2001, the political forces that agreed with those sentiments had taken control of the government of the old United States. In 2011, they created the apartheid state of the New American Republics. In 2023, following the conclusion of the Second Civil War, Constitutional Democracy was Restored in the Re-United States. This book, published on the 25th anniversary of the Restoration, briefly reviews the political history of the rise and fall of fascism in the old United States and the NAR. The book's principal purpose is to show how fascism can be gradually introduced into any country, even the world's greatest democracy, by constitutional means. The lessons for our time are that the maintenance of constitutional democracy requires eternal vigilance and that those forces whose aims are essentially fascist in nature must never be allowed even one bite of the apple of governmental power. For once they have bitten into it, they will eat the whole apple, core and all. No sharing and no returns. Regurgitation only by the application of extreme force.
