Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Texts in Mission & World Christianity, a unique sourcebook on the history and mission of the church. Nearly two hundred selections covering the two millennia of the Christian era are represented, including both classic and contemporary voices of persons in mission - women and men, from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe - and key texts for understanding the mission of Christ, the vocation of the church, and the nature of Christianity. Following the outline of David Bosch's monumental Transforming Mission, Classic Texts offers its readers the full texts cited throughout that best-seller, as well as dozens of additional primary sources from every era and every part of the world. From the seventh century abbess Bertilla of Chelles (who directed both women and men missionaries in England) to the Nestorian Monument detailing struggles with issues of contextualization in 8th century China, to David Livingstone's oft-cited espousal of civilization, commerce, and Christianity (seldom quoted in its entirety), Classic Texts provides a depth and breadth of resources unparalleled elsewhere.

Book The Evangelization of the World in This Generation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Evangelization of the World in This Generation Classic Reprint written by John R. Mott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evangelization of the World in This Generation The Gospel which is to be preached to every creature is the Gospel which St. Paul and the other early Christians preached. Its main out lines are set forth in the fifteenth chapter of the first letter to the Corinthians, in which St. Paul sums up the Gospel which he had preached to them I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that He was buried and that He hath been raised on the third day according to the scriptures.1 The many side-lights on the preaching of the Apostles given in the Acts and in the Epistles make plain that the substance and burden of their message or gospel were the facts about Jesus Christ - His wonderful life and works and teachings; His death for the remission of sins; His resurrection and ascension; His constant intercession; His sending of the Holy Spirit to convict, to trans form, to guide and to energize men; and the promise of His own return. Book Evangelicals Incorporated

Download or read book Evangelicals Incorporated written by Daniel Vaca and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new history explores the commercial heart of evangelical Christianity. American evangelicalism is big business. For decades, the world’s largest media conglomerates have sought out evangelical consumers, and evangelical books have regularly become international best sellers. In the early 2000s, Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life spent ninety weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list and sold more than thirty million copies. But why have evangelicals achieved such remarkable commercial success? According to Daniel Vaca, evangelicalism depends upon commercialism. Tracing the once-humble evangelical book industry’s emergence as a lucrative center of the US book trade, Vaca argues that evangelical Christianity became religiously and politically prominent through business activity. Through areas of commerce such as branding, retailing, marketing, and finance, for-profit media companies have capitalized on the expansive potential of evangelicalism for more than a century. Rather than treat evangelicalism as a type of conservative Protestantism that market forces have commodified and corrupted, Vaca argues that evangelicalism is an expressly commercial religion. Although religious traditions seem to incorporate people who embrace distinct theological ideas and beliefs, Vaca shows, members of contemporary consumer society often participate in religious cultures by engaging commercial products and corporations. By examining the history of companies and corporate conglomerates that have produced and distributed best-selling religious books, bibles, and more, Vaca not only illustrates how evangelical ideas, identities, and alliances have developed through commercial activity but also reveals how the production of evangelical identity became a component of modern capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Students' Challenge to the Churches: A Plea for a Forward Movement in World Evangelization The men early drop out of sight. The writer has stood by the grave of one of them, James Richards, who finished his course as a mission ary in Ceylon; Mills was buried in the Atlantic on his return from a mission to Africa. They are chie y remembered as the originators of the American Board, having apparently failed in their other great project, the arousing of the student world for foreign missions. They did not fail, however. It is doubtful whether any group of men ever succeeded more signally in making real a great ideal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Men's National Missionary Congress: Of the United States of America, Chicago, Illinois, May 3-6, 1910 The work of the Congress was fitly completed in the adoption of a National Missionary Policy, by which the Churches of the United States acknowledged the cen tral and commanding obligation resting upon them to be the immediate world-wide presentation Of the gospel. This obligation imposes the necessity of quadrupling the present contribution of missionary service and Of means; and the conviction is declared that in accordance with their ability and Opportunity, the laymen of the churches are equally responsible with the ministers to pray and to plan, to give and to work for the coming of the kingdom of God upon earth. Three years of actual working, and the judgment of two national Congresses solemnly expressed after ma ture deliberation, thus emphasize the conviction that brought the Movement into being, that the Church can make real the Vision Of world-evangelization within this generation. Book The World and the Gospel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The World and the Gospel Classic Reprint written by J. H. Oldham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World and the Gospel As the months of war have passed, the conviction has grown in my mind that if the missionary move ment is to maintain its place among the many urgent tasks which will claim our attention on the restoration of peace, and to accomplish its work in the new world into which we are being brought, it is necessary for us to go back to first principles and take a fresh hold of the fundamental truths on which the whole undertaking rests. I believe that if we do this we shall find in the missionary idea, truly apprehended and heartily embraced, the liberation and inspiration that we need if we are to succeed in the difficult tasks before us in days to come. To meet the moral and spiritual needs, which in the light of the war are so patent and real, the Church requires a more passionate, exultant, venturesome faith in the Gospel entrusted to it, and the one sure way in which we can learn anew what the Gospel means is boldly to assert its right to rule the whole life of the world.
