Book Permanent Alliance

Download or read book Permanent Alliance written by Stanley R. Sloan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stanley Sloan has for many years been one of the most influential and authoritative analysts of the NATO Alliance. In his new book Permanent Alliance? he demonstrates once again his in-depth knowledge of NATO issues and his sound, balanced judgements of both the strengths and weaknesses of the Alliance as it strives to adapt to the 21st-century security challenges. This book should be at the top of the list for anyone who wants to understand today's NATO." Jamie Shea, Director, Policy Planning, Private Office of the Secretary General, NATO "Stanley Sloan, a distinguished NATO analyst, has been thinking, lecturing, and writing about the transatlantic bargain for over a generation. In this, his third book on the subject, he has produced a masterly re-examination of the sixty-year relationship between America and Europe. Cautiously optimistic about NATO's future, this authoritative study should be welcomed by scholars and policymakers alike. It will be a valuable text for my NATO history classes." Lawrence S. Kaplan, Emeritus Director, Lyman L. Lemnitzer Center for NATO and European Union Studies, Kent State University "Sloan's book is an outstanding study on the subject matter of transatlantic relations. He is an original thinker, an experienced researcher and---clearly visible---loves the subject matter. This study is a must both for teachers and students of political science and contemporary history." Bram Boxhoorn, Director, Netherlands Atlantic Association "I read Stan Sloan as I began teaching NATO affairs decades ago. I continue to read him today to learn. You will as well---read him." Lawrence Chalmer, National Defense University Permanent Alliance? NATO and the Transatlantic Bargain from Truman to Obama examines how US-European relations are evolving in response to the many global trends that are changing the strategic environment for that relationship. The Obama Administration has taken responsibility for US participation in the transatlantic alliance as the allies prepare to implement a new strategic concept and try to shape NATO's future in view of these trends and the alliance's experience in Afghanistan. In this light, Sloan assesses whether NATO is becoming the permanent alliance President George Washington warned us against, or if it is nearing the end of its utility.

Download or read book NATO After 2000 written by John Borawski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-05-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borawski and Young provide a serious analysis of the major issues confronting European-North American relations. They draw detailed attention to the fundamental political and military issues before the Atlantic Alliance. They illustrate that NATO remains essential to Euro-Atlantic security. Only the Atlantic Alliance can bring to bear well-tested military capability under US leadership to promote its members security, interests, and democratic values. However, to remain vital, the Alliance must undertake a serious review of its major purposes: enlargement to the former Warsaw Pact nations, a strategic partnership with Russia, defense against weapons of mass destruction, and a more mature transatlantic relationship drawing on the lessons of the former Yugoslavia. This is an important assessment for policymakers, military planners, scholars, students, and others concerned with current European-American relations.

Book The United States NATO and a New Multilateral Relationship

Download or read book The United States NATO and a New Multilateral Relationship written by Frank R. Douglas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed in the aftermath of WWII and in the face of the emerging threat posed by the Soviet Union, the transformation that has taken place in recent years within NATO has been neither natural nor easy for the multi-national organization or the United States. When the Soviet Union ceased to exist it seemed NATO would disappear too. The rationale for a large American military deployment in Europe, described by President Eisenhower as a temporary move, no longer could be supported. This work documents the transition of the United States relationship with NATO from a focus on the defense of Western Europe to an inclusive military and political organization concerned with the security of all of Europe with the real potential for employment of its military power beyond the European continent. Despite budgeting and economic concerns raised by key members of the U.S. Congress, President George H.W. Bush supported the status quo and was caught completely off guard when the Berlin Wall fell. He and Defense Secretary Dick Cheney had not fully understood the changed strategic environment in Europe but the U.S. Congress did and offered many suggestions. NATO was saved. President Bill Clinton continued to promote the validity of NATO, expanded NATO eastwards, reduced the U.S. troop level in Europe to 100,000, and gave NATO a mission beyond warfare with the peacekeeping task in Bosnia. A new Atlantic relationship had been forged for the post-Cold War period.

Book The European Security and Defense Policy

Download or read book The European Security and Defense Policy written by Robert E. Hunter and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2002-04-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of the European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP) in the last two-thirds of the 1990s and continuing into the new century, has been a complex process intertwining politics, economics, national cultures, and numerous institutions. This book provides an essential background for understanding how security issues as between NATO and the European Union are being posed for the early part of the 21st century, including the new circumstances following the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. This study should be of interest to those interested in the evolution of U.S.-European relations, especially in, but not limited to, the security field; the development of institutional relationships; and key choices that lie ahead in regard to these critical arrangements.

Book NATO the European Union and the Atlantic Community

Download or read book NATO the European Union and the Atlantic Community written by Stanley R. Sloan and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now fully revised and updated, this accessible and astute text provides a full interpretive history of the transatlantic alliance and explores critical developments in U.S.-European relations. The first edition highlighted the dangers that U.S. foreign-policy unilateralism could pose for the relationship, a trend that has only intensified over the past few years. Stanley R. Sloan documents and analyzes the substantial ongoing record of U.S. unilateralism and its consequences as the transatlantic and intra-European debate over Iraq produced deep splits among the allies and seriously eroded European trust in U.S. leadership. Ironically, at the same time, the United States and Europe have made historic choices concerning NATO's future, not only continuing the process of enlarging alliance membership but also expanding the concept of NATO's missions to include peacekeeping and enforcement without geographic limitation. Sloan also enlarges on his ideas for a new Euro-Atlantic pact, a call that has now been echoing in both European and American quarters. Assessing both the good and bad news for the alliance, this book remains a central text for college and university courses on U.S.-European relations and transatlantic security issues and thought-provoking reading for all citizens concerned about future US foreign policy and Europe's role in it.
