Book excerpt: L'analyse de l'évolution de la ville nord-américaine, surtout depuis les années 1960, permet d'identifier les maux actuels, d'étudier les solutions envisageables et d'évaluer les enjeux sociaux, économiques, urbanistiques et politiques. La perspective comparative a été volontairement privilégiée car elle permet de mieux dégager la spécificité de la ville canadienne. La comparaison est essentiellement centrée sur le Canada et les États-Unis mais n'exclut pas quelques allusions au modèle britannique. Trois avenues disciplinaires ont été privilégiées, celle qui relève du politique, celle qui relève du sociologique et celle qui a trait aux disciplines liées à l'étude et à l'aménagement de l'espace (pour cette dernière, trois axes ou trois niveaux d'analyse ont été retenus et traitent de l'organisation de l'espace, du fonctionnement de l'économie et de la gestion politique tant au niveau national/fédéral que régional ou local). On constate les signes d'une évidente évolution, qu'il s'agisse du passage du semi-social au pénal, c'est-à-dire d'un système de protection à un système de pénalisation ou bien encore du passage de la sphère publique à celle du privé et, enfin, d'une dévolution de pouvoirs qui transfère les responsabilités du niveau central à l'échelon local. On est ainsi passé de la phase de la réglementation par le sommet à une phase de désengagement qui permet les initiatives de la base et du socio-communautaire. Le bilan d'ensemble est à la fois clair et plutôt sombre. Face à l'affaiblissement de la notion de responsabilité collective, l'Impression dominante est de se trouver de plus en plus face à des problèmes sans issue, sans solution mais il est vital de ne pas abandonner. Notre volonté également partagée doit être celle de bâtir la cité idéale, même si cela peut relever de l'utopie. L'ère des illusions et des attentes déçues a conduit à celle du soupçon et de l'impatience. Nous aimerions pouvoir entretenir encore l'Illusion ultime que le progrès est possible. Ce n'est qu'à ce prix que la ville cessera d'être le monde de la barbarie pour devenir celui de la civilisation.

The Digital Economy offers an up-to-date, critical synthesis that links the various aspects of the digital or cyber economy from the perspective of real firms. A geographic approach emphasizes how IT has made businesses less dependent on locational constraints, and the tangible effects on places and regions are placed at the core of the analysis. Case studies of companies, including Amazon, Dell, Li & Fung, and Volvo, demonstrate that the geography of digitally-driven production is the outcome of both dispersion and agglomeration dynamics. Book excerpt: The editors of this book examine social movement scholars’ use of contemporary concepts and paradigms in the study of protest as they analyse the extent to which these tools are valid (or not) in very different regional - and thus political or cultural - contexts. The authors posit that ’weakly resourced groups’ are a particularly useful point of departure to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of three key social movement schools of analysis: resource mobilization, political opportunity structures, and frame analysis. Some of the groups considered in this volume are financially disadvantaged, lacking money and work; others are economically disadvantaged, with members having precarious, part-time, or short-term jobs; some are socially disadvantaged, with fragile networks of solidarity; others are culturally disadvantaged, with members continuously victimized, stigmatized and rejected; finally some are politically disadvantaged when they have little or no access to decision-making structures. These exclusionary factors can be cumulative and give way to different outcomes. The chapters cover a large range of examples including urban riots in France and in Great Britain, the World Social Forums of Dakar and Nairobi, the struggles of precarious workers in Italy and Greece, unemployed mobilization in Germany and Ireland, the mobilization of the Roma and Muslims in Europe, the Brazilian landless movement, the mobilization of small farmers in France, as well as mobilization in authoritarian states such as Morocco and Cuba. Book excerpt: At the end of the Second World War, America’s newly acquired status of hegemonic power- together with the launch of ambitious international programs such as the Marshall Plan- significantly altered existing transatlantic relations. In this context, Italian and American architectural cultures developed a fragile dialogue characterized by successful exchanges and forms of collaboration but also by reciprocal wariness. The dissemination of models and ideas concerning architecture generated complex effects and frequently led to surprising misinterpretations, obstinate forms of resistance and long negotiations between the involved parties. Issues of continuity and discontinuity dominated Italian culture and society at the time since at stake was the possible balance between allegedly long-established traditions and the prospect of a radical rupture with recent history. Architectural culture often contributed to reach a compromise between very diverging attitudes. Situated in the larger realm of studies on Americanization, this book questions current interpretations of transatlantic relations in architecture. By reconsidering the means and effects of the dialogue that unfolded between the two sides of the Atlantic during the postwar years, the volume analyzes how cultural and formal models were developed in one context and then modified when transferred to a new one as well as the fortune of this cultural exchange in terms of circulation, amplification, and simplification.
