Book excerpt: WHEN I went to France there was no thought in my mind that I should ever write a book on the subject of my experiences over there. On my return, however, many friends besieged me for details of the great war, which had come under my observation while serving in the Ambulance Corps on the French front. It was easy to infer from the eagerness of all that real news was in demand, none seeming to tire of asking questions and listening to what I had to say in reply. From these impromptu conversations occurring day after day, I began to realize how much I had really experienced during my stay abroad. Consequently, when urged to write a book for the benefit of the general public, I consented on the theory that the more we Americans know about true conditions in the War Zone the surer we are to win victory from the most ruthless enemy ever known to mankind.

Book excerpt: World War One/military/medicalLeslie Buswell failed his military medical but determined to serve in the ?Great War? made his way to France, serving in the American Field Ambulance Service driving Car No 10. His letters home to the USA depict a true hero, albeit sickened by the futility of war and the horrors of trench warfare. ?The horror of the whole war is growing on me day by day, and sometimes when I have got into my bed or am trying to get a few hours? sleep on a stretcher (every other night I am on duty and so cannot undress), the horrors of blood: broken arms, mutilated trunks, and ripped-open faces etc. haunt me, and I feel I can hardly go through another day of it. But all that is soon forgotten when a call comes, and you see those bandaged soldiers waiting to be taken to hospital. I almost love my old car (it was in the battle of the Marne) and I often find myself talking to it as I pick my way in pitch darkness past carriage guns or reinforcements. If one does not quickly become an expert driver, one would have no car to drive, for it is almost impossible to see five yards ahead ...?

Book excerpt: Here is a collection of intensely interesting episodes related by a Young American who served as a volunteer with the French Army--Red Cross Division. His book is to the field of mercy what those of Empey, Holmes and Peat have been in describing the vicissitudes of army life. The author spent ten months in ambulance work on the Verdun firing line. What he saw and did is recounted with most graphic clearness.Notice: This Book is published by Historical Books Limited (www.publicdomain.org.uk) as a Public Domain Book, if you have any inquiries, requests or need any help you can just send an email to [email protected] This book is found as a public domain and free book based on various online catalogs, if you think there are any problems regard copyright issues please contact us immediately via [email protected]

Ambulance Service and published by . This book was released on 1919 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original typescript relates the history of the Ambulance Service with the French Army on the Western Front, during WWI. A signed introduction by Col. Percy L. Jones, Paris, April 15, 1919, states that the report is in compliance with instructions given by the Surgeon General, Nov. 27, 1918. Some of the chapters discuss organization; instruction; equipment; evacuation; morale activities; demobilization; and their role in the Battle of the Argonne in 1918. Diagrams illustrate the relationship of the USAAS with the French Army, and maps show zones for the movement of supplies and the wounded. Brief historical summaries of the individual units list statistics such as the American places of origin, many of which were universities; officers' names; fronts and campaigns served on; names and causes of ambulance personnel taken ill, injured, or killed; and commendations. A full-plate photograph depicts a new superior French-built ambulance known as the "American Field Service Type."

Book excerpt: They left Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Michigan, and Stanford to drive ambulances on the French front, and on the killing fields of World War I they learned that war was no place for gentlemen. The tale of the American volunteer ambulance drivers of the First World War is one of gallantry amid gore; manners amid madness. Arlen J. Hansen’s Gentlemen Volunteers brings to life the entire story of the men—and women—who formed the first ambulance corps, and who went on to redefine American culture. Some were to become legends—Ernest Hemingway, e. e. cummings, Malcolm Cowley, and Walt Disney—but all were part of a generation seeking something greater and grander than what they could find at home. The war in France beckoned them, promising glory, romance, and escape. Between 1914 and 1917 (when the United States officially entered the war), they volunteered by the thousands, abandoning college campuses and prep schools across the nation and leaving behind an America determined not to be drawn into a “European war.” What the volunteers found in France was carnage on an unprecedented scale. Here is a spellbinding account of a remarkable time; the legacy of the ambulance drivers of WWI endures to this day.

Book Ambulance No 10 Personal Letters Of A Driver At The Front Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Ambulance No 10 Personal Letters Of A Driver At The Front Illustrated Edition written by Leslie Buswell and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Letters describing the daily life and activities of a section of the voluntary “American Ambulance Field Service in France”, operating over a period of four months in 1915 in Lorraine in support of the French. These letters were written by a member of the American Ambulance Field Service in France, a voluntary organisation that came into existence soon after the outbreak of war and in 1916 had over 200 motor ambulances. They were driven by young American volunteers, most of them graduates of American universities, who got no salary but their living expenses were paid. The ambulances were grouped in sections of twenty to thirty vehicles, attached to the French Armies and carried the wounded between the front and Army Hospitals within the Army zone. They were particularly useful in Alsace where their light but powerful vehicles were able to cope with the steep mountain passes which French motor ambulances could not manage. The section in which the writer of these letters served and whose daily life and activities he describes was located in Lorraine. The letters cover a period of four months from June to October 1915 and were first published in 1915 under the title With the American Ambulance Field Service in France, changed to Ambulance No 10 for this 1916 edition, purely for the sake of brevity. There is plenty of action to read about in this correspondence and there are interesting photographs.”-N&M Print Version.
