Part fiction, part earnest mockumentary, AMBIENT PARKING LOT follows a band of musicians as they wander the parking structures of urban downtown and greater suburbia in quest of the ultimate ambient noise—one that promises to embody their historical moment and deliver them up to the heights of their self-important artistry. Along the way, they make sporadic forays into lyric while contending with doubts, delusions, miscalculations, mutinies, and minor triumphs. This saga peers into the wreckage of a post-9/11 landscape and embraces the comedy and poignancy of failed utopia.

Download or read book Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy written by Ferenc Mezei and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron spin echo (NSE) spectroscopy is the highest energy resolution neutron scattering technique available for examining a large area (in time and space) in condensed matter physics. This broad dynamic and spatial range is extensively exploited in the study of a wide range of scientific problems ranging from the dynamics of glasses, polymer melts, complex fluids and microemulsions to the elementary excitations in superfluid 4He and to ferromagnets and spin glasses. This book reviews the current status and future prospects in NSE spectroscopy describing the method, latest instrumentation and also the use of NSE in fundamental, hard- and soft-matter science. It provides first-hand information for researchers working in the fields touched by NSE. In addition, young researchers, PhD students and graduates interested in the method will obtain a comprehensive overview and guidelines to implementing the NSE technique.
Download or read book Advances in Echo Imaging Using Contrast Enhancement written by N.C. Nanda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will familiarize the reader with recent advances in echo imaging technology with special emphasis on echo enhancing agents. Several important strides have been made in this field during the past few years, especially in the contrast enhancement of conventional and color Doppler images. The book begins with chapters on the history of contrast echocardiography, the principles of contrast echo and descriptions of new contrast agents capable of transpulmonary passage following intravenous injection. Safety issues in contrast echocardiography are also discussed. The second section of the book deals with clinical uses of echo contrast agents. Their usefulness in the identification of cardiac structures and assessment of pathological lesions using both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography are fully discussed. Technical and practical considerations in the use of various contrast agents are also described. The use of contrast echo in the identification of cardiac sources of embolism as well as possible mechanisms and clinical significance of spontaneous contrast echoes are also covered. Six chapters fully discuss the basics of contrast enhancement of conventional and color Doppler images and its clinical utility in the noninvasive assessment of pulmonary artery pressure, regurgitant and stenotic lesions and in the delineation of coronary arteries. Another chapter describes the non-cardiac applications of the echo contrast enhancement technique. The final section of the book investigates the role of echo contrast enhancement in quantitative cardiovascular analysis.

Download or read book Principles of Marine Bioacoustics written by Whitlow W. L. Au and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have always been fascinated by marine life, from extremely small diatoms to the largest mammal that inhabits our planet, the blue whale. However, studying marine life in the ocean is an extremely difficult propo- tion because an ocean environment is not only vast but also opaque to most instruments and can be a hostile environment in which to perform expe- ments and research. The use of acoustics is one way to effectively study animal life in the ocean. Acoustic energy propagates in water more efficiently than almost any form of energy and can be utilized by animals for a variety of purposes and also by scientists interested in studying their behavior and natural history. However, underwater acoustics have traditionally been in the domain of physicists, engineers and mathematicians. Studying the natural history of animals is in the domain of biologists and physiologists. Und- standing behavior of animals has traditionally involved psychologists and zoologists. In short, marine bioacoustics is and will continue to be a diverse discipline involving investigators from a variety of backgrounds, with very different knowledge and skill sets. The inherent inter-disciplinary nature of marine bioacoustics presents a large challenge in writing a single text that would be meaningful to various investigators and students interested in this field. Yet we have embarked on this challenge to produce a volume that would be helpful to not only beginning investigators but to seasoned researchers.
Download or read book Ambient Intelligence Software and Applications 12th International Symposium on Ambient Intelligence written by Paulo Novais and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest research on Ambient Intelligence (AmI) including software and applications in different areas such as Internet of Things, Multi-Agent Systems or e-Learning, among others. AmI is a paradigm emerging from Artificial Intelligence, in which computers are used as proactive tools for assisting people with their day-to-day activities, making everyone’s lives more comfortable. Another main concern of AmI originates from the human–computer interaction domain and focuses on offering ways to interact with systems in a more natural way by means of user-friendly interfaces. The published book correspond to technical and novel works carried out by scientists conducting research within the AmI area in one of the areas mentioned above. The intended readers are those with mainly technical profiles who are already working in the area of AmI or who want to focus their current work in this area. The papers collected in this book were presented at a symposium which was jointly organized by the Universidade do Minho and University of Salamanca. The latest installment was held in Salamanca, Spain, from October 6th to 8th, 2021. The authors wish to thank the sponsors: IBM, Indra, Viewnext, Global Exchange, AEPIA, APPIA and AIR Institute.
