Book excerpt: The COVID19 virus has crippled the world. It has done untold damage to our physical health, our mental health and our financial health. But here on Isla Bonita, the damage is almost beyond measure. Ambergris Caye's only industry is tourism. Coming off an incredibly short and slow "high season" many of our businesses, and their employees, were already struggling. We instantly had a large number of people who could no longer feed themselves. Quickly, people started to step up to help their friends and neighbors - their island families. This is where this cookbook comes in.100% of the profits from this book will be donated to feed those in need on Ambergris Caye. Within the covers you will find 96 recipes crafted and kindly contributed by local restaurateurs, chefs, Ambergris Caye residents and Ambergris Caye visitors. You'll find dozens of Belizean dishes and dozens of non-Belizean dishes. At first, I had thought about doing only Belizean dishes. But I quickly realized one of the things I love about this country, and about the island specifically, is it's truly a melting pot of cultures from all over the world. So why not include all of the recipes contributors love so dearly even though they aren't a quintessential "Belizean dish?"

Download or read book Grass Roots written by Emily Dufton and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How earnest hippies, frightened parents, suffering patients, and other ordinary Americans went to war over marijuana In the last five years, eight states have legalized recreational marijuana. To many, continued progress seems certain. But pot was on a similar trajectory forty years ago, only to encounter a fierce backlash. In Grass Roots, historian Emily Dufton tells the remarkable story of marijuana's crooked path from acceptance to demonization and back again, and of the thousands of grassroots activists who made changing marijuana laws their life's work. During the 1970s, pro-pot campaigners with roots in the counterculture secured the drug's decriminalization in a dozen states. Soon, though, concerned parents began to mobilize; finding a champion in Nancy Reagan, they transformed pot into a national scourge and helped to pave the way for an aggressive war on drugs. Chastened marijuana advocates retooled their message, promoting pot as a medical necessity and eventually declaring legalization a matter of racial justice. For the moment, these activists are succeeding -- but marijuana's history suggests how swiftly another counterrevolution could unfold.
Download or read book Radiometric Methods of Dating Fossils written by Kimberly Wylie and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2006-07-16 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Archaeology, University of Phoenix, language: English, abstract: Today, most of the methods utilized for chronometric dating of fossils are radiometric. Radiometric dating, in general, refers to the dating of material by using the known rate at which certain radioactive isotopes decay, or at what rate there are collective changes due to radioactivity. Even though isotopes of an element can be different when it comes to atomic mass, the atomic number of the isotope is always the same. Radioactive elements decay at unique rates, dependant on the isotope. This rate of decay is known as half-lives, it is the time necessary for 1⁄2 of the atoms to decay in a particular element. The decay follows a geometric scale, in that in the first half-life of an element, 1⁄2 of the atoms decay, yet in the second half-life, 1⁄2 of those remaining decay, meaning a 1⁄4 of the original atoms decay, and so forth. By measuring this decay, and knowing the half life of an element, scientists can date a sample.
Download or read book Cows Save the Planet written by Judith D. Schwartz and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cows Save the Planet, journalist Judith D. Schwartz looks at soil as a crucible for our many overlapping environmental, economic, and social crises. Schwartz reveals that for many of these problems—climate change, desertification, biodiversity loss, droughts, floods, wildfires, rural poverty, malnutrition, and obesity—there are positive, alternative scenarios to the degradation and devastation we face. In each case, our ability to turn these crises into opportunities depends on how we treat the soil. Drawing on the work of thinkers and doers, renegade scientists and institutional whistleblowers from around the world, Schwartz challenges much of the conventional thinking about global warming and other problems. For example, land can suffer from undergrazing as well as overgrazing, since certain landscapes, such as grasslands, require the disturbance from livestock to thrive. Regarding climate, when we focus on carbon dioxide, we neglect the central role of water in soil—"green water"—in temperature regulation. And much of the carbon dioxide that burdens the atmosphere is not the result of fuel emissions, but from agriculture; returning carbon to the soil not only reduces carbon dioxide levels but also enhances soil fertility. Cows Save the Planet is at once a primer on soil's pivotal role in our ecology and economy, a call to action, and an antidote to the despair that environmental news so often leaves us with.

Download or read book 40 Dives 40 Dishes written by Al and Freda Wright and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is unusual that a scuba diving liveaboard should be known for anything other than the quality of the diving service it offers. The MV Salutay is that rare exception. Not only does she offer a top and innovative diving service and access to some of the best diving around the United Kingdom and Northern France, she also has divers returning every year because of the wonders that her galley produces. Chef Freda Wright has been getting requests for recipes for many years and generations of divers have begged her to produce a cookbook, so that they can continue to enjoy her mouth-watering meals and snacks when they go home. This is the cookbook that they wanted: a selection of soups, main courses, desserts and snacks that divers aboard the MV Salutay have been enjoying for decades and that now you can cook at home for family and friends. As well as the easy-to-follow recipes, this book also includes diving tales from the three decades that Freda and her husband, captain and technical diving pioneer Al Wright, have been exploring British, Irish and French waters. From the story of how Al discovered three major shipwrecks off Malin Head, Ireland at the dawn of the technical diving revolution to diving with seals in St. Kilda and descriptions of exploring the D-Day wrecks in the Baie de Seine, these anecdotes are clips of British diving history: essential reading for new divers and veterans alike.
