Book excerpt: Excerpt from Curiosities of Judaism: Facts, Opinions, Anecdotes and Remarks Relative to the Hebrew Nation The Title which I have assumed for this little book, bringing it, so far, in juxta-position with the world-renowned work of the elder D'Tsraeli, might lead to the expectation of elaborate disquisitions and extended remarks on various subjects, which its nature would seem to include. It is true that the field of research is extensive, fertile, and rich in its treasures; and will, no doubt, under younger and more vigorous labourings, yield ample and productive harvests. Repeating the words of my prospectus, my readers will please to remember that this is a work of little pretension. It is simply a selection, with references to every original source; "it does not aspire to the dignity of history, nor even of a chronological arrangement." Still, it is hoped that it may be found amusing and interesting, and, in some degree, useful to those who wish to investigate Jewish affairs subsequent to Scriptural periods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Curiosities of Judaism: Facts, Opinions, Anecdotes and Remarks Relative to the Hebrew Nation Long before Poetry spread a brilliant eclat among the population of Southern F rance, ' a remarkable literary move ment took place, although this was generally unknown, because it Operated but indirectly among the branches of knowledge of the Middle Ages. We refer to the studies, and the philosophical works, which the Jews undertook with such great success, at this epoch, in the bosom of the schools which they had founded at N arbonne, at Lune], at saint-gilles, and at other towns of the South. A Spanish Jew, Benjamin of Tudela, who travelled from 1160 to 117 3, to visit his co-religionists in various places, has transmitted several interesting details respecting these establishments and those who directed them. We shall supplement his account by what we gather from the writings of these celebrated rabbins themselves, but in this intro duction we shall simply glance on the intellectual move ment, and particularly on the schools and establishments which have favoured and advanced it, limiting ourselves here to a general view, but reserving for further remarks particulars of different men who have taken part in this movement. Book The Invention of the Jewish People

Download or read book The Invention of the Jewish People written by Shlomo Sand and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical tour de force that demolishes the myths and taboos that have surrounded Jewish and Israeli history, The Invention of the Jewish People offers a new account of both that demands to be read and reckoned with. Was there really a forced exile in the first century, at the hands of the Romans? Should we regard the Jewish people, throughout two millennia, as both a distinct ethnic group and a putative nation—returned at last to its Biblical homeland? Shlomo Sand argues that most Jews actually descend from converts, whose native lands were scattered far across the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The formation of a Jewish people and then a Jewish nation out of these disparate groups could only take place under the sway of a new historiography, developing in response to the rise of nationalism throughout Europe. Beneath the biblical back fill of the nineteenth-century historians, and the twentieth-century intellectuals who replaced rabbis as the architects of Jewish identity, The Invention of the Jewish People uncovers a new narrative of Israel’s formation, and proposes a bold analysis of nationalism that accounts for the old myths. After a long stay on Israel’s bestseller list, and winning the coveted Aujourd’hui Award in France, The Invention of the Jewish People is finally available in English. The central importance of the conflict in the Middle East ensures that Sand’s arguments will reverberate well beyond the historians and politicians that he takes to task. Without an adequate understanding of Israel’s past, capable of superseding today’s opposing views, diplomatic solutions are likely to remain elusive. In this iconoclastic work of history, Shlomo Sand provides the intellectual foundations for a new vision of Israel’s future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book that is both clarion call for a new Jewish agenda and a blueprint for an adventurous but genuine path toward spiritual growth and religious wisdom. Rabbi Niles Elliot Goldstein, founder and Rabbi Emeritus of The New Shul in New York City, says that most conventional Jewish institutions are out-of-touch and have relied too much on nostalgia, guilt, and fear—none of which resonate with modern Jews. He challenges Jews to adopt the "gonzo" spirit—the rebellious, risk-taking attitude associated with the gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson—and to take creative, innovative steps to reshape and revitalize contemporary Judaism. Goldstein urges readers to take a fresh look at Judaism, to become educated about its history and tradition, to discover what is authentic, yet what also feels spiritually relevant and meaningful, and to create a Jewish culture and community rooted in affirmation, joy, and celebration. He provides a wealth of information on numerous organizations, institutions, synagogues, grassroots groups, and networks that can help get you started on the gonzo path. • Author : Ruth R. Wisse
  • Publisher : Schocken

Download or read book Jews and Power written by Ruth R. Wisse and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2008-12-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the Jewish Encounter series Taking in everything from the Kingdom of David to the Oslo Accords, Ruth Wisse offers a radical new way to think about the Jewish relationship to power. Traditional Jews believed that upholding the covenant with God constituted a treaty with the most powerful force in the universe; this later transformed itself into a belief that, unburdened by a military, Jews could pursue their religious mission on a purely moral plain. Wisse, an eminent professor of comparative literature at Harvard, demonstrates how Jewish political weakness both increased Jewish vulnerability to scapegoating and violence, and unwittingly goaded power-seeking nations to cast Jews as perpetual targets. Although she sees hope in the State of Israel, Wisse questions the way the strategies of the Diaspora continue to drive the Jewish state, echoing Abba Eban's observation that Israel was the only nation to win a war and then sue for peace. And then she draws a persuasive parallel to the United States today, as it struggles to figure out how a liberal democracy can face off against enemies who view Western morality as weakness. This deeply provocative book is sure to stir debate both inside and outside the Jewish world. Wisse's narrative offers a compelling argument that is rich with history and bristling with contemporary urgency.

Download or read book The Jewish Body written by Melvin Konner and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the Jewish people from bris to burial, from “muscle Jews” to nose jobs. Melvin Konner, a renowned doctor and anthropologist, takes the measure of the “Jewish body,” considering sex, circumcision, menstruation, and even those most elusive and controversial of microscopic markers–Jewish genes. But this is not only a book that examines the human body through the prism of Jewish culture. Konner looks as well at the views of Jewish physiology held by non-Jews, and the way those views seeped into Jewish thought. He describes in detail the origins of the first nose job, and he writes about the Nazi ideology that categorized Jews as a public health menace on par with rats or germs. A work of grand historical and philosophical sweep, The Jewish Body discusses the subtle relationship between the Jewish conception of the physical body and the Jewish conception of a bodiless God. It is a book about the relationship between a land–Israel–and the bodily sense not merely of individuals but of a people. As Konner describes, a renewed focus on the value of physical strength helped generate the creation of a Jewish homeland, and continued in the wake of it. With deep insight and great originality, Konner gives us nothing less than an anatomical history of the Jewish people. Part of the Jewish Encounter series
