Book Alzheimer s Disease A Century of Scientific and Clinical Research

Download or read book Alzheimer s Disease A Century of Scientific and Clinical Research written by G. Perry and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006-06-26 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a landmark work commemorating the centennial of Alois Alzheimer's discovery of what would be known as Alzheimer's disease (AD). The centennial of Alois Alzheimer’s original description of the disease that would come to bear his name offers a vantage point from which to commemorate the seminal discoveries in the field. It traces how the true importance of AD as the major cause of late life dementia ultimately came to light and narrates the evolution of the concepts related to AD throughout the years and its recognition as a major public health problem, with an estimated 30-40 million people affected by AD today. To identify the breakthroughs, the editors have used citation analysis, landmark papers identified by current researchers, and drew upon their own experience and insights. This process took into account the perspectives of individuals who recall the impact of findings at the time they were made, as well as of scientists today who have the advantage of hindsight in weighing the lasting influence of these findings. Because modern AD research was triggered by the seminal work of Tomlinson, Blessed, and Roth some four decades ago, it is particularly fortunate that the vast majority of these milestone authors are still with us.

Book Alzheimer s Disease Advances for a New Century

Download or read book Alzheimer s Disease Advances for a New Century written by IOS Press and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a companion to the highly successful book published in association with the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (JAD) on the centennial of Alzheimer’s discovery: “Alzheimer’s Disease: A Century of Scientific and Clinical Research”. Instead of looking back, this collection, “Alzheimer’s Disease: Advances for a New Century”, will look forward. Using scientometric analysis the most promising developments since the Alzheimer Centennial in 2006 have been substantiated. While prior trends and advances in genetics, amyloid-?, tau, neuropathology, and oxidative stress continue as active areas, emergent areas impacting the transition from normal cognition to Alzheimer’s disease such as diagnostic imaging, biomarkers, metabolism, and lifestyle (areas conceived only a few years ago) now dominate the debate. Invited contributors have summarized their landmark publications identified by our analysis and have put them into perspective, explaining the impetus behind the work, the contribution of the results to the field, and who played a role in the work.

Book Global Clinical Trials for Alzheimer s Disease

Download or read book Global Clinical Trials for Alzheimer s Disease written by Peter Schüler and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date (2013), we have witnessed over 100 years of research on Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the past century, this gave new and deep insights into its pathophysiology. However, no new treatment with an innovative mode of action has found its way to the patients since the first targeted therapies with cholinergic drugs like Tacrin. So far A-beta and related targets have shown negative results in pivotal Phase III studies, after showing promising trends in Phase II. Thus the question arises as to whether A-beta is the wrong target for disease-modifying treatments, or whether other substantial changes to clinical development plans need to be made, e.g. including patients at risk of developing AD instead of those already experiencing symptoms. Alternative targets and study design options like enrichment strategies, however, do not evolve as an easy alternative solution.

Book How Not to Study a Disease

Download or read book How Not to Study a Disease written by Karl Herrup and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authority on Alzheimer's disease offers a history of past failures and a roadmap that points us in a new direction in our journey to a cure. For decades, some of our best and brightest medical scientists have dedicated themselves to finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. What happened? Where is the cure? The biggest breakthroughs occurred twenty-five years ago, with little progress since. In How Not to Study a Disease, neurobiologist Karl Herrup explains why the Alzheimer's discoveries of the 1990s didn't bear fruit and maps a direction for future research. Herrup describes the research, explains what's taking so long, and offers an approach for resetting future research. Herrup offers a unique insider's perspective, describing the red flags that science ignored in the rush to find a cure. He is unsparing in calling out the stubbornness, greed, and bad advice that has hamstrung the field, but his final message is a largely optimistic one. Herrup presents a new and sweeping vision of the field that includes a redefinition of the disease and a fresh conceptualization of aging and dementia that asks us to imagine the brain as a series of interconnected "neighborhoods." He calls for changes in virtually every aspect of the Alzheimer's disease research effort, from the drug development process, to the mechanisms of support for basic research, to the often-overlooked role of the scientific media, and more. With How Not to Study a Disease, Herrup provides a roadmap that points us in a new direction in our journey to a cure for Alzheimer's.

Book The Problem of Alzheimer s

Download or read book The Problem of Alzheimer s written by Jason Karlawish and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive and compelling book on one of today's most prevalent illnesses. In 2020, an estimated 5.8 million Americans had Alzheimer’s, and more than half a million died because of the disease and its devastating complications. 16 million caregivers are responsible for paying as much as half of the $226 billion annual costs of their care. As more people live beyond their seventies and eighties, the number of patients will rise to an estimated 13.8 million by 2050. Part case studies, part meditation on the past, present and future of the disease, The Problem of Alzheimer's traces Alzheimer’s from its beginnings to its recognition as a crisis. While it is an unambiguous account of decades of missed opportunities and our health care systems’ failures to take action, it tells the story of the biomedical breakthroughs that may allow Alzheimer’s to finally be prevented and treated by medicine and also presents an argument for how we can live with dementia: the ways patients can reclaim their autonomy and redefine their sense of self, how families can support their loved ones, and the innovative reforms we can make as a society that would give caregivers and patients better quality of life. Rich in science, history, and characters, The Problem of Alzheimer's takes us inside laboratories, patients' homes, caregivers’ support groups, progressive care communities, and Jason Karlawish's own practice at the Penn Memory Center.

Book Global Clinical Trials for Alzheimer s Disease

Download or read book Global Clinical Trials for Alzheimer s Disease written by Debbie N. Cote and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 2% of the United States population gets involved with clinical research trials each year; among those people who suffer from severe, chronic illnesses (including Alzheimer’s disease), only 6% participate. As a result, an increasing number of clinical trials are delayed because too few people ever know they had an opportunity to get involved. Recruitment strategies consist of effective campaigns that reach the intended population of potential patients. A strategy using several tactics will most likely achieve the best outcome. The art of patient recruitment is to cast a wide net, combining a patient-centric enrollment focus, involving the use of social media and conventional media, coupled with customer-“friendly” protocols. Investigative sites providing a high level of customer satisfaction may result in accelerating enrolment, improving retention and thereby reducing the overall study cost.

Book Pharmacological Treatment of Alzheimer s Disease

Download or read book Pharmacological Treatment of Alzheimer s Disease written by Gustavo Alves Andrade dos Santos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent form of dementia. Although it was discovered about a century ago, the first drugs applied in treatment were only introduced in therapy in the last 30 years. This book focuses on the clinical pharmacology of drugs that aim to delay the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, such as anticholinesterases and glutamate receptor antagonists, as well as treatment for the behavioral changes caused by the progression of the disease: antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and mood stabilizers. In addition, it describes important information about the pathophysiology and diagnostic methods of Alzheimer’s disease, emergency situations conditioned by the dementia process, and presents new perspectives for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The ten chapters cover topics such as mechanism of action, dosage regimen, adverse reactions, drug interactions, toxicity profiles, among other information of clinical relevance. The work comprises evidence-based studies, providing a valuable resource for analyzing, prescribing and monitoring patients being treated for Alzheimer’s disease. Written by experts with solid professional experience, this book will appeal to pharmacologists, geriatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, biomedical clinicians, and other healthcare professionals.

Book Global Clinical Trials for Alzheimer s Disease

Download or read book Global Clinical Trials for Alzheimer s Disease written by Menghis Bairu and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 35 million people worldwide are living with dementia, the vast majority Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-related. By 2050, Alzheimer’s disease cases will triple to 115 million—one new case every four seconds—placing untold stress on overburdened social service and healthcare delivery systems, a potentially catastrophic global epidemic. Sixty percent of Alzheimer’s disease victims now live in lesser developed countries. In 2050, these countries will account for 71% of the total Alzheimer’s disease caseload. In 2010, the annual cost of AD was estimated at US$604 billion and rising, i.e., roughly 1% of the world’s gross domestic product. Many Alzheimer’s disease victims are stigmatized, resulting in isolation, abandonment, and withdrawal. Diagnosis and treatment are often non-existent. Only 9 of the 193 World Health Organization member states have implemented national dementia plans, all in the developed world. However, there is some promising news. National models for mitigating the epidemic exist. Research and recommendations are available to assist developing countries in blunting the worst ravages of the epidemic.
