Book The Conscience of the Constitution

Download or read book The Conscience of the Constitution written by Timothy Sandefur and published by Cato Institute. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conscience of the Constitution: The Declaration of Independence and the Right to Liberty documents a forgotten truth: the word “democracy” is nowhere to be found in either the Constitution or the Declaration. But it is the overemphasis of democracy by the legal community–rather than the primacy of liberty, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence–that has led to the growth of government power at the expense of individual rights. Now, more than ever, Sandefur explains, the Declaration of Independence should set the framework for interpreting our fundamental law. In the very first sentence of the Constitution, the founding fathers stated unambiguously that “liberty” is a blessing. Today, more and more Americans are realizing that their individual freedoms are being threatened by the ever-expanding scope of the government. Americans have always differed over important political issues, but some things should not be settled by majority vote. In The Conscience of the Constitution, Timothy Sandefur presents a dramatic new challenge to the status quo of constitutional law.

Book With Christ in the Voting Booth

Download or read book With Christ in the Voting Booth written by David J. Shedlock and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With Christ in the Voting Booth is not a dated Voter's Guide that promotes certain candidates and after the election becomes as useful as day-old toast. Instead, Shedlock has written a book that addresses issues that crop up in every election. What if the candidate isn't fully pro-life? What if he or she wants to raise my taxes? What about third parties, or sitting it out altogether?" Governor Mike Huckabee Know who to vote for doesn't always come easy for the Christian. No unambiguous voice from heaven whispers: "This is my candidate, vote for him." Even though almost every candidate in America makes a Christian profession, most of us know some Christians we wouldn't trust with a loaded BB gun, let alone access to the launch button of the world's largest cache of nuclear weapons. Thankfully, God has given us His Word, "The Ultimate Voter's Guide." Using the Bible, With Christ in the Voting Booth provides us tools to resist Government Too Small and Government Too Big, while embracing Government Just Right, not based on false promises and "Christian" utopian fantasies, but rather the most important political success story of all: The Voter (and Governor) Who Pleases God. David Shedlock graduated from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri and received his Master's Degree in English as a Second Language from Minnesota State University (Mankato). He is a leading contributor and assistant editor to the blog, Caffeinated Thoughts and its companion site Caffeinated Theology. He has been a member of Trinity Presbyterian Reformed Church in Johnston, Iowa, since 1996. He and his wife, Judy, have five children and 16 grandchildren. Book excerpt: Movin’ on and Beyond By: Betty Brown Movin’ on and Beyond is an autobiography portraying an American girl born on the prairie in the middle of the United States to hardworking, untutored, steadfast parents and immigrant grandparents. It tells of her experiences growing up, marriage, raising a family, employment, divorce, remarriage, travels and sickness. Through her determination, integrity and courage, she became a strong-willed, independent thinker. Challenges only made her stronger, setbacks made her determined. Her strength comes from her father, personal endurance from her mother. This book is intended for family reading to educate young & old. Make your journey through life a courageous one, keeping focused. Honor events of those that came before us and those who come after us. I have heard it said, the road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called faith and a driver called Jesus who leads you to a place called success. From the words of the hymn, “I Am Forever Who I Am” Some days seem long, though life is brief, Death is waiting like a thief. Vision fades, dreams go dry, We will on unseen things rely. Stories take up but a page, Yours goes on from age to age.

Book excerpt: The GasTrend Conspiracy is the fictional account of an attempted takeover of a natural gas distribution company by a major city through condemnation action and citizen vote. The reasons for the attempted condemnation and ultimate ownership of GasTrend by the city are the mayor's hatred of GasTrend and the city's declining revenues due to an economic downturn. The initial gas company crisis begins when a county road grader slips on an icy ridge in below zero weather. The grader slides through a bridge railing and cuts open the high-pressure natural gas line feeding gas to the city. The ensuing explosion and fire consumes the road grader, kills the operator, and prevents new natural gas from flowing into the city, thus, endangering residents because soon there will be no heat. Something must be done quickly or the residents could freeze. In order to own and operate the gas company, the mayor convinces some legislators to introduce a bill in the State House that would allow condemnation action. This would insure that they would also pay for all of the expenses of the action and the subsequent election. How can they get the natural gas business back on track so that it is working for the people and not against them?

Book Click On Democracy

Download or read book Click On Democracy written by Grant Reeher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Click on Democracy examines the first national election in which the Internet played a major role. The contributors argue that the Internet's most profound political impact on Election 2000 has largely been missed or underestimated. The reason: the difference it made was more social than electoral, more about building political communities than about generating votes and money. The contributors to Click on Democracy talk at length with the people who are using the Internet in new and effective ways, and who are capitalizing on the Internet s power as a networking tool for civic action. Viewed from this bottom-up perspective, the Internet emerges as an exciting and powerful source of renewal for civic engagement. The new foreword is from Scott Heiferman and William Finkel, both of Meetup, Inc.
