Download or read book Helping People Change written by Richard Boyatzis and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You're trying to help--but is it working? Helping others is a good thing. Often, as a leader, manager, doctor, teacher, or coach, it's central to your job. But even the most well-intentioned efforts to help others can be undermined by a simple truth: We almost always focus on trying to "fix" people, correcting problems or filling the gaps between where they are and where we think they should be. Unfortunately, this doesn't work well, if at all, to inspire sustained learning or positive change. There's a better way. In this powerful, practical book, emotional intelligence expert Richard Boyatzis and Weatherhead School of Management colleagues Melvin Smith and Ellen Van Oosten present a clear and hopeful message. The way to help someone learn and change, they say, cannot be focused primarily on fixing problems, but instead must connect to that person's positive vision of themselves or an inspiring dream or goal they've long held. This is what great coaches do--they know that people draw energy from their visions and dreams, and that same energy sustains their efforts to change, even through difficult times. In contrast, problem-centered approaches trigger physiological responses that make a person defensive and less open to new ideas. The authors use rich and moving real-life stories, as well as decades of original research, to show how this distinctively positive mode of coaching—what they call "coaching with compassion"--opens people up to thinking creatively and helps them to learn and grow in meaningful and sustainable ways. Filled with probing questions and exercises that encourage self-reflection, Helping People Change will forever alter the way all of us think about and practice what we do when we try to help.

Download or read book The Season written by Hilda Bridget Turner and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born on February 8, 1951 in a small migrant camp town in Southeast Florida. This mostly hot sandy little community was called Indiantown. My mother was a nineteen years old along, who with her father David and other siblings, lived at this camp during the seasonal months of 1950. They worked picking vegetables out in the enormous fields owned by local farmers for what little money they could make. This money was to be taken back home to care for the rest of the family. Times were hard and the family needed money to make ends meet. My grandmother, Annie Mae, was at home, a two-hour drive north in central Florida. She was caring for all the younger children. David and Annie Mae came to Florida in 1950; their children would always tease them by saying . . . . "We left Carolina in 1949 and got to Florida in 1950". Of course it was late December when they left, and January 1st by the time they arrived.
Download or read book Two Years in Outer Galaxy written by Tegegne Wassie and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Years in Outer Galaxy By: Tegegne Wassie Destiny is not what you can make or change: there are natural conditions beyond your challenge. A man unintentionally stepped on a wrong spot to find himself in a new city, in a new land, in a new world called “Biqat” in an outer galaxy. Fortunately, the world he ended up in was very civilized and had advanced technology. He was welcomed, treated well, and cured of his terminal illnesses that he could not find a cure for on Earth. He continued to travel the rest of Biqat, a nation of five big planets. From there, the man explored beyond Biqat. Let us share his exciting experiences. Knowledge is a collection of experiences. Naturally, we have acquired knowledge from collected experiences over time. We find knowledge conditioned and kept in human cages, while raw knowledge is in the open, free in the wild outside human cages. It has been said that you are what you feed. Books are one of the enhancers of experiences and we read them to enhance our experiences and we write books to share our experiences. Different experiences give spaces for evaluation and judgments to experiences we accumulate. The more we are exposed to different experiences, the more critial we are. We don’t take things as they are, at face value. This book touches almost every individual’s life in our society.

Download or read book The New Internationalists written by Sue Clayton and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of the mobilization of thousands of volunteers who rescued, supported, and welcomed refugees during the recent European refugee crisis. In The New Internationalists, Sue Clayton tells the story of the largest civic mobilization since the Second World War, when volunteers--many young and untrained--took on unimaginable responsibilities and saved thousands of lives. During the European refugee crisis of 2015-2020, they witnessed first hand the catastrophic failure of established NGOs, and the indifference--and frequently, the open hostility--of the EU and national governments. Many faced state hostility themselves. Their accounts show how activist volunteers have shaped today's European humanitarian agenda, and provide a powerful critique of failures of current policy.
Download or read book Studies of the Holocaust written by Roberta R Greene and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been more than sixty years since the end of World War II and the liberation of the survivors of the Holocaust. Since then, many rich personal and historical accounts have been written of the horrific events of those times. Mental health workers have strived to give survivors solace for their loss, and help them return to a meaningful life. Meanwhile, scholars continue to ponder the inexplicable facts of genocide. Yet Studies of the Holocaust: Lessons in Survivorship continues to be timely. Based on more than 100 interviews in nine U.S. locations, the book offers a powerful view of survivors’ hope, determination, and resilience. Study questions elicited survival strategies, and revealed how, following the war, survivors overcame the horrors of the Holocaust, formed families, built careers, and gave to their communities. Survivor quotes taken from these interviews illuminate how the survivors maintained competence into old age. While memories of pain persist, accomplishments are acknowledged, and provide lessons for students of human development, mental health practitioners, and the general public. This book was previously published as a special issue of Journal of Human Behaviour and the Social Environment.
