Download or read book The Children of the Night written by Mary Elisabeth D'Angelo and published by ANDERSON CABRAL. This book was released on 2024-11-11 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pendleton, a city steeped in history and old traumas, the flicker of a dark mist brings forth echoes of a terrifying past. When children begin to disappear, Marco Oliveira, a detective haunted by traumas from his own childhood, returns to his hometown at the sheriff's invitation. Alongside Isabela Santos, a survivor marked by family secrets and pain, and Tomás, a loyal friend and strategist, they delve into an investigation that uncovers the sinister presence of a cult known as "The Children of the Night." Led by Lúcia, a charismatic and manipulative figure, the cult is dedicated to dark rituals aimed at invoking an ancestral entity through sacrifices. Lúcia's motivations go beyond mere power; she believes she can bring back lost souls, including her own family, by sacrificing innocents in the name of a "greater good." However, her actions conceal a selfishness that leaves a trail of pain and despair. As they unveil the secrets of the cult, Marco and his friends discover that the missing children are not just victims; they are part of a larger plan, a rite that seeks not only recognition but also the ability to dominate not just Pendleton, but the very fabric of reality itself. The information gathered reveals that, to prevent the final ritual, they must find an ancient relic that can seal the cult once and for all. As tensions rise and disappearances become more frequent, twists and turns arise. Miguel, Isabela's twin brother whom they believed lost, returns as an undercover agent in the cult, only to be protected by the cultists themselves. This revelation calls his loyalty into question and casts doubt on the trust the group had built. With the full moon approaching, the struggle transforms into a crucial battle between light and darkness, where secrets of friendship and betrayal entwine. Marco must confront not only the cult but also his own internal demons. He realizes that true strength lies in truth and unity and that the greatest sacrifice may be the vulnerability he has been reluctant to accept. "The Children of the Night" is a gripping tale of mystery and terror that investigates the limits of sacrifice and the echoes of the past, prompting the reader to question: how far would you go to protect those you love? The fate of Pendleton now rests in the hands of its heroes as they fight against the shadows that threaten to encircle them, bringing not only their fears but also the realities hidden beneath the surface of the town. The battle for the soul of the community is just beginning, and light will become the ultimate weapon for those brave enough to wield it.

Download or read book Leaders Eat Last written by Simon Sinek and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller by the acclaimed, bestselling author of Start With Why and Together is Better. Now with an expanded chapter and appendix on leading millennials, based on Simon Sinek's viral video "Millenials in the workplace" (150+ million views). Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders create environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things. In his work with organizations around the world, Simon Sinek noticed that some teams trust each other so deeply that they would literally put their lives on the line for each other. Other teams, no matter what incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting, fragmentation and failure. Why? The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps general. "Officers eat last," he said. Sinek watched as the most junior Marines ate first while the most senior Marines took their place at the back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort--even their own survival--for the good of those in their care. Too many workplaces are driven by cynicism, paranoia, and self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and cooperation because their leaders build what Sinek calls a "Circle of Safety" that separates the security inside the team from the challenges outside. Sinek illustrates his ideas with fascinating true stories that range from the military to big business, from government to investment banking.

The Herald--a harbinger comet--has appeared in the sky, telling all the Time of Trial is near. She is ready to do as her duty requires, though the very world she will die to preserve is one she will never see. Dal has led a free life, serving the Order established centuries ago to find and instruct the Bearer in how to perform the Trial established by the covenant made between the Four Gods and the Demons who seek to take over his world. Yet as the latest Trial approaches, there has been no news of the Bearer. The Order is worried… A lively child draws these two together. La'tiera is elated at seeing a person or two from the outside, even as she worries her selfish desire for companionship might put all in jeopardy. Suspicion then arises on both sides, as what she has been taught and what Dal knows to be true are widely different. La'tiera knows the truth--she is the sacrifice that will save the world, no matter who says it should be otherwise. Her task has always been clear. She will not be swayed from her course. But Dal knows her death will open their world to the savage Demons--the exact opposite of what she has been told. He must find a way to get her to accept this before it is too late. But can he? Her very dedication and stubbornness might just doom their world to destruction. Let the battle of wills begin.

Book excerpt: It has long been a favourite tenet of mine, and there are now, I think, others who hold it, that Insanity is no exception to the rule which requires a knowledge of the normal as an indispensable preliminary to a knowledge of the abnormal. The reason why the contrary opinion has been maintained with such vigour, and the contrary practice so generally followed, has seemed to me to be the absence of any work in which normal psychological processes are dealt with from the point of view and for the purposes of the alienist. Of the many excellent works on Psychology which are at the service of the student, there is none that affords him material help in understanding the nature of those disorders of mind which it is the work of his life to study. For instance, the chief labours of the student of the disordered mind are concerned with the existence and nature of Delusion; but, as far as I know, no work on normal psychology gives him any help in settling the preliminary questions of what a delusion is; of how it differs from a normal state of mind; of its mode of origin; or of its varieties. It is true that these are not questions in normal psychology, and it is no reproach to the psychologist who deals with the normal alone that they are excluded from his purview; but it is a great disadvantage to the alienist to be left without guidance in the face of problems of such profound importance to him.
