Book A Retrospective Study of Marginal Alveolar Bone Changes After Rapid Maxillary Expansion

Download or read book A Retrospective Study of Marginal Alveolar Bone Changes After Rapid Maxillary Expansion written by Victoria Leigh Hutta and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Dental expansion is used to correct transverse discrepancies such as constriction of the maxilla or a posterior crossbite. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) corrects the constriction of the maxilla by opening the skeletal sutures of the maxilla along with tipping and moving teeth. This standard treatment for the correction of transverse maxillary deficiency applies forces to the maxilla through the anchor teeth which can result in unfavorable changes to anchor tooth angulation and the buccal bone adjacent to these teeth. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare changes in buccal bone width and height and intermolar inclination in adolescent patients pre and post rapid maxillary expansion and investigate the correlation of these factors with skeletal maturation using cervical vertebral maturation stages (CVM) and mid-palatal suture density ratio (MPSD) at the start of treatment. Methods: This study was conducted on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 25 patients, pre-, and post expansion. CVMS and MPSD were from the pre-treatment CBCT. Buccal bone thickness, buccal bone height and intermolar inclination were calculated pre-, and post expansion. The correlation between changes in alveolar bone variables and skeletal maturity using CVM and MPSD was investigated. Results: No statistically significant relationship was found between MPSD and changes in bone variables. Further, no statistically significant relationship was found between CVM stage and changes in bone variables. There were no statistically significant correlations; therefore we failed to reject the null hypothesis. Conclusion: There is no relationship between changes in alveolar bone variables around molar teeth following RME and pre-treatment CVM and MPSD.

Book Effects of Orthodontic Treatment on Human Alveolar Bone Density Distribution

Download or read book Effects of Orthodontic Treatment on Human Alveolar Bone Density Distribution written by Hechang Huang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Introduction: This study examined the changes of the maxillary and mandibular alveolar tissue mineral density distribution after orthodontic treatment using clinical cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) images. Methods: CBCT images taken before and after orthodontic treatment from 43 patients were globally segmented. Mean and variability of CT attenuation values of bone voxels were computed for alveolar cortical (AC) and trabecular (AT) bones between the maxillary and mandibular left second premolar and first molar, cervical vertebral trabecular (VT) bone, mandibular left basal cortical (BC) bone and enamel (E). The regional variations within each image, as well as percentage (%) differences of the CT attenuation parameters between regions (AC, AT and VT, BC and E) before and after orthodontic treatment for each patient were computed and compared. Results: AT and AC had higher variability of tissue mineral density than VT, BC and E. The variability of tissue mineral density increased in both jaws for AT, and increased in the maxilla for AC after orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: After orthodontic treatment, bone remodeling activity was increased in the alveolar trabecular bone in both jaws, and was increased in the alveolar cortical bone in the maxilla.

Book Bone Remodeling Orthodontics by Jaw Repositioning and Alveolar Growth

Download or read book Bone Remodeling Orthodontics by Jaw Repositioning and Alveolar Growth written by Leon Kussick and published by Quintessence Publishing (IL). This book was released on 1987 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated volume introduces bone remodelling, which is designed to overcome many of the limitations of multibanded and functional orthopaedic therapies. This technique consists of jaw relocation and local remodelling of alveolar bone to accommodate crowded teeth with simple appliances.

Book Alveolar Bone and Airway Changes in Different Maxillary Expansion Treatments

Download or read book Alveolar Bone and Airway Changes in Different Maxillary Expansion Treatments written by Dennis Wang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives: To evaluate the long-term effects on the airway and bone in patients that have undergone BA, TA and control with 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis. Materials and Methods: 180 CBCTs were analyzed for 60 patients at pretreatment (T1), post expansion (T2), and post-treatment (T3). Patients were divided into three groups, bone anchored expansion (BA), tooth anchored expansion (TA) and a control group. For the airway portion of the study, the nasal cavity, nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal, and total airway volumes were measured. Total airway area, minimal cross-sectional area, maxillary intermolar, external maxillary and palatal widths were also examined. For the bone portion of the study, intermolar width, palatal width, molar angulation, vertical bone height, and buccal bone thickness at the alveolar crest and root apex were measured. Results: Both BA and TA caused a significant increase in the airway parameters short-term but when examining long-term results, there were no significant differences in the airway parameters between the three groups except for the nasopharyngeal volume and palatal width parameters.. Both BA and TA resulted in significant increases in the intermolar width, molar angulation, palatal width, vertical bone height and buccal bone thickness at the root apex short-term. Long-term examination showed similar trends to that seen in the short term for both BA and TA groups. However, in the control group, there were significant increases in the intermolar width and decrease in the buccal bone thickness at the root apex. When comparing the end results with pre-treatment measurements, there was still a significant decrease in the vertical bone heights in the BA and TA groups. Conclusions: There were significant increases in the total airway volume and area, minimal cross-sectional area with BA and TA immediately post-expansion but by post-treatment, the changes seen in the airway and bone parameters in the BA and TA groups were similar to the changes seen in the control group. The only differences seen long-term were that the BA group led to a significant increase in the nasopharyngeal volume and that the BA and TA groups led to significant decreases in the vertical bone heights.

Book Orthodontic Diagnosis

Download or read book Orthodontic Diagnosis written by Thomas Rakosi and published by Thieme. This book was released on 1993 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated guide for the complex process of orthodontic diagnostics and indication. The total process of treatment planning including the scientific bases is pictorially described. Beside the conventional methods of examination and model analysis, emphasis is placed on the cranio-facial growth processes, the aetiology of malocclusions and on the importance of functional analysis. The following three aspects are described in detail in this book: Growth of the Facial Skeleton - types of treatment which promote or guide growth. In order to control these natural processes artificially, a precise understanding of them is required. Aetiology of the Malocclusion - the various types of causative therapy and the elimination of the causes. Functional Analysis - many malocclusions are a result of dysfunctions. As a variety of methods are available for treating dysfunctions, functional analysis is taken very seriously.
